Just a general comment before I get started on the days activities. Our web page is setup so those of you who take the time to read of our adventure can make comments. To date there have been some made, however most have been made by our extended family. I encourage everyone who reads to comment. Matt sends us those comments weekly. It is like letters from home! We are for all intents and purposes cut off from the rest of the world out here. We don't get any news when not in town and about the biggest thing we ask about when meeting a person is weather coming at us. If there is something you want to ask about or a suggestion on how to do each blog better, let me know. It makes our ... read more

OD - A new month! Been back on the trail for a week now and getting stronger every day. Had a good nights sleep with a few lightning storms in the distance as we went to sleep. Only had some strong winds go through the tree tops where we were and lots of thunder. Morning brought clear skys and sun. We managed to get everything packed in about 30 minutes, but it took almost an hour to cook breakfast, clean up the mess and hit the trail. The temp was near 65 degrees when our packs got cinched down. The Calf Mountain Hut sits at 2,700', we headed to the top then down into Beagle Gap at 2,550'. From there it was over Bear Den Mountain, 2,885' that is covered in commercial radoi antennas. There were ... read more

OD's comments: 13.5 miles today. Seven days straight walking since coming back on the trail. Woke up to sun and clear skys. Getting out of camp quicker and made it out in 1.5hrs. Green is starting to cover the trees. There were green trees down lower, but up here on the ridge they were still bare. Today we could almost see leafs come out and unfold. There will be total foliage by tomorrows sunset. Started out on the south side of Blackrock Montain at about the 2,500' level. Walked the obligatory .2 miles back to the trail. Down hill to Blackrock Gap, then up a gradual up hill 6.5 miles toping out just over 3,000'. We dropped down to Sawmill Run Overlook and then over a couple of knobs then up Calf Mountain to the shelter. ... read more

The Outer Banks and The Eastern Shore PierceMy last day at Fort Fisher and Kure Beach was full of excitement. I finally was able to get into the library in Carolina Beach to use the internet because the day before was invaded by wild school kids. The Shirt Shack in Kure Beach was finally open for business and I made a custom t-shirt order. I spelled out my bike tour mission in big red letters on the back. "Key West to Canada" I ate a delicious crab cake sandwich at the Old Pier House Restaurant and relaxed on the beach while waiting for my shirt to be finished. Later that evening Todd and I went out to the Sea Witch for late food and brew. The next morning we went to the Pier House again for ... read more

OD's comments: Started today at the Pinefield Hut near mile post 75 of Skyline Drive. We awoke to slightly cool air and the sun just coming over the ridge. We tried a semi-cold breakfast to see if we could get out of camp quicker. We hit the trail at 8:30AM, an hour earlier than normal. We wanted the early start wit 13.9 miles ahead of us. We were just below the 2,500' level when we hit the trail, our highest point today was about 3,400'. We crossed Loft Mountain and Blackrock Mountain today and went through Ivy Creek Overlook, Ivy Creek, Doyles River Overlook, Browns Gap and past Madison Run Rd. We ended the day on the south side of Blackrock Mountain about 600' below the summit. We saw quite a few Northbound Thru Hikers today, ... read more

The simple plan of the day was to wake up, grab food, go to Humpback Rocks to do some hiking, come back, and enjoy the rest of the day. As you can probably guess, that's not what happened. We did get up, and we did get food. We did, also, make it to Humpback Rocks in Shenandoah National Park; however, before we got there, we got stopped and searched by a National Park Ranger/fake policeman. Rob was speeding, and just before we made it to the parking lot below Humpback Rocks, he saw the flashing lights behind him and had to pull over. I really didn't know that National Park patrolmen had the authority to pull people over and write tickets until now. The ranger came ... read more

OD’s comments: Not sure if I gave our exact location last night. We stayed at Lewis Mountain Camp. Will try to make Hightop Hut today. We changed our packs around yesterday and it seemed to work better. CC carries her sleeping bag, both cloths bags, the cook pot and water purifier. I carry all food, tent complete and the fuel/stove. We will try a new system of walking today. Have been walking for three hours before taking a break (CC sets the pace, so no slave driver comments please :-) Today we will take a 5 - 10 minute break every hour. It will be a few days until the next phone. Thanks for the prayers. Patrick, Deborah Mooney aka OD & CC All Who Wander Are Not Lost ... read more

OD's comments: First day since coming back on the trail we had a nice sunrise and no fog or rain. The trail was nice and we saw a number of northbounders. We also talked to one of the trail maintenance workers. These guys do one heck of a job. All the clean up work after this spring's ice storm will take a very long time. We only did 8.7 miles today and it is the first time in days my heels didn't get worse. I did a small modification to the heel of my boots and it worked. The band-aids stayed put all day. If I can get three days without any more problems, the boots I have now will work fine. Got into the shelter by 3:30PM and took our time doing dinner and prepping ... read more

Trip to UVaLiz Toms Well, I'm on the road again. This time I'm driving to Charlottesville, Virginia, again. I had to make one last trip to one of my favorite places before everyone graduates from UVa in a few weeks. Keith and I set off Thursday night after watching The Office (which was insanely hilarious, by the way) and made our way through the night to Virginia. Usually, to cut down on the time and mileage it takes to travel from Champaign to C'ville, I go through Indiana to Dayton, Ohio, where I cut down 35 to Charleston, West Virginia, and then on to Charlottesville. Out of all the driving trips I've made to UVa I've taken this route the majority of the time. The other times I've gone through Kentucky on the route that Rand ... read more

OD's comments: Rain all night with medium winds. Our record still holds, no real rain while walking. To date we have only had sprinkles during the day while walking. We started at Lewis Mountain Camp around 8AM in very thick fog around 3,300' heading south. We went over Bald Face Mountain, around Dean Mountain, Saddleback Mountain thru Swift Run Gap and off another map sheet. Lastly we climbed Hightop Mountain, 2.2miles up hill over the 3,587' summit. The day ended up with nice sun that allowed us to dry the wet tent. I am doing this a day after the fact and can't remember all the finer points. My heel blisters are still there but not as bad. We did about 12 miles today. CC's comments: I can't remember yesterday other than the last hill took ... read more
