We ended up spending one full day on the bus, two days at the hotel and the last day at the venue until 3 o'clock in the morning. If I hadn't briefly seen it pushing foam around, I might have thought Virginia Beach was just a place someone had attached the word "beach" to attract visitors. For that split second, it was really comforting. And then, we discovered that my hotel wasn't the beachfront that a large group of people were staying at, but another, twenty miles inland. The amphitheatre was interesting. Having worked at Starwood in Nashville for 4 years (with a seating capacity of just over 18,000), I had a hard time believing this amphitheatre seated a solid 20,000. The main entrance is settled between two big (decorative?) lakes with fountains in the centers. ... read more

Hit the trail at 7:30AM today trying to beat the heat that is giving CC such a hard time. As seems normal now it was up hill right out of the shelter. Over Floyd Mtn (3,560') then a long down hill to the Bryant Ridge Shelter (1,320') a brisk four mile walk, three of which were down hill. This shelter warrants a brief description. It is a sort of backwoods condo. The entire frame is done in post and beam, mortised joints held with wood dowels not nails. The joinery was pure craftsmanship! There are three levels with an L shaped veranda. I took a bunch of pictures and Matt can post them when they get to him. It sits on a small promontory with a small stream doing a U around the structure some ... read more

We had three late arrivals into camp last night. I was tickled when he asked if I was a Thru Hiker. He was unsure because he said I was "Too clean" to be a Thru Hiker. I had done some hygiene before he arrived, was clean shaven, and smelled good. We had a small visitor in the tent about 2AM. I had left the zipper open just enough for Mr. Mouse to come in for a look around. The only problem was my melon was directly inline with said opening. As Mr. Mouse made his ingress he bumped the top of said melon waking me up. Startled, I grabbed the headlamp for a look-see. Mr. Mouse knew the gig was up and hurriedly searched for an egress point. He dashed around the outside edge of the ... read more

Received our box first thing this morning. Got all the stuff packed, shipped a few more things home, and the packs are heavy once again. The kindness of the ladies who run the bank and Post Office won't soon be forgotten. We hit the road about 9AM, still feels funny to hitch hike. I have not done any since I was 19, and it just seems weird to do it. We walked toward the trail trying to hitch a ride, no luck for the first mile and the gas station/store. We needed to top off the fuel bottle for the stove. Our stove is a multi-fueler and will burn almost anything. Unleaded was $2.99 a gallon. The top off cost $.30 :-) As CC was walking into the store, a man pulled up and asked where ... read more

Nice night of rest, I guess. CC picked the tent spot for last night. "The dry leaves will make a soft bed" but the humped ground they hid made rough sleeping. We both fought sliding one direction or the other all night. The good thing was the temp was comfortable all night long. We ate cold cereal and a Pop Tart for breakfast. One of the guys there had extra hot water and coffee, so I took a cup of his Joe. We were out of camp by 8:45AM. The plan was to only do 8.8 miles to the next shelter and hold up there until morning tomorrow and then hit town for a re-supply box. We made great time and decided to press the extra 1.7 miles to the road and hitch a ride ... read more
