Geo: 38.8921, -77.0241Today we had an appointment with C. Bruce Norman at the Travel Clinic at Henrico Doctors' Hospital. In addition to our "standard" immunizations, we opted to receive an immunization against Typhoid Fever. While the chances of getting typhoid are not good, it is recommended for "risk averse" travellers who will have an extended stay in Turkey. Since "risk averse" describes me to a "T," we ponied up the $ for the shots. It is also available as a series of pills, but the shot seemed much easier. Ms. Norman is a consummate professional and was able to speak confidently about the region and briefed us on the primary the health concerns. Rabies is the big one, so we all discussed leaving cute, furry animals alone. We also got to see some new syringes that ... read more

Out of town again. Try as we might, our packs get heavy every time we come to town and they always put the town at the bottom of a mountain. Hit the trail at 8:30AM. Waiting to cross US220 cars streamed by as their occupants headed to work. Some looked at us in wonder and I looked back feeling sorry for them. I tried to imagine what the were thinking. I mean it isn't like during the Depression where you would see Hobos, Tramps and Bums traveling to and fro. We didn't have out a sign saying we were homeless and needed help. Just to older folks with big packs on our backs walking some where. The trail is now west of I-81 and not paralleling the Blue Ridge Parkawy. Tinker Mountain raises up to ... read more

Change. Today started off with a trip up the road to "P.Zaz", the local salon. CC had decided to take our youngest daughter, Joline's advice. Whack most of her hair OFF! We have been married almost 31 years, during which CC's hair has never been less than shoulder length. It has been as long as below her bottom. When we walked through the door she anounced she wanted a radical cut which raised all three hairdressers eyebrows. CC explained what she wanted and why, then said that I was also to take a seat for some hair work. We had brought the camera to record the event with before, during and after shots. Of course CC's transformation was the greater, we both walked out looking real good. CC's face fit the short cut quite well. ... read more

Last night we had quite the crew loggered up around the Wilson Creek Shelter. After CC and I retired to the relative privacy of our orange home, TinTin and the crew were still going strong. They had hauled five pounds of hotdogs and all the fixins, plus everything they needed for Smores up from town. While roasting chow 'round the campfire they listened to Winny Pooh being read aloud. Between the crew of four they carry only the one book and take turns reading aloud to each other at night. Not sure when they called it a night, but when we got up at 6:30AM they were all still sleeping. Old Fat Dad and Tenderfeets hit the trail about an hour before CC and I. All gear was stowed and we were hoofing towards town ... read more

Bees - Thought for the day. While walking through the woods today a thought struck us. There must be over a million flowers out here. We have yet to see any Honey Bees. We have seen no bees other than Bumble Bees around the shelters. I heard three or four radio stories about the Honey Bee business and the missing bees. Something is causing the bees to disappear from their hives. After talking to other hikers they have noticed the same thing, no bees to be seen. Just something to ponder. Rained at about midnight for an hour or so. We were up by 6:30AM, did breakfast, and were on the trail by 7:55. The humidity was thick as day old buttermilk. The valleys were filled with fog up to the 2,000' level. The temp started ... read more

Geo: 42.9371, -72.8497We've rented the house, we've bought the tickets, we've made hotel reservations. What else is there to do? Well... they Typhoid shots. I'm pretty sure we won't get typhoid without them, but how embarassing would that be to try and explain to people back home how I lost a child to typhoid? So we're going to the travel clinic next week. I spoke with the travel clinic lady on the phone the other day and she was Johnny-on-the-spot and really seemed to have a good grasp of what we needed to do. When prepping for the unknown, it's good to talk with people who inspire confidence. Rabies is also a danger, so we need to remember to stay away from animals.... read more

We ended up spending one full day on the bus, two days at the hotel and the last day at the venue until 3 o'clock in the morning. If I hadn't briefly seen it pushing foam around, I might have thought Virginia Beach was just a place someone had attached the word "beach" to attract visitors. For that split second, it was really comforting. And then, we discovered that my hotel wasn't the beachfront that a large group of people were staying at, but another, twenty miles inland. The amphitheatre was interesting. Having worked at Starwood in Nashville for 4 years (with a seating capacity of just over 18,000), I had a hard time believing this amphitheatre seated a solid 20,000. The main entrance is settled between two big (decorative?) lakes with fountains in the centers. ... read more
