Geo: 38.8921, -77.0241Alex's thoughts: I think that going to Turkey is going to be a lot of fun. I'm going on a train for the first time. I am going to sleep on the train. I think it's going to be pretty easy to fall asleep on the train because the sleeper car was made to have people sleep on it. I think there will be melons in Turkey. They are supposed to be the best melons. I think they will taste great. I like to eat them cold. I think they will have some different kinds of melons from the ones that we have in America. I hope they have Fruit Roll-ups there. They are delicious. When we get to Turkey we will use buses, trains and airplanes. I know how to say "excuse me" in ... read more

Have been a little slow getting another message up, but have been busy traveling, visiting with friends, and trouble getting the wi-fi to work. So let me update you on the trip to so far. We had a safe trip to St. Louis where we got Sarah and Jay at the airport and went to our niece's, Abbey, graduation. The ceremony was very nice with an excellent speaker. Then all the family went to dinner at the Big Sky Cafe (shades of Montana) and finished the evening with dessert at the Chocolate Bar in Lafayette Square. Was great to see everyone and join Abbey (Dr. Kennedy now) in the celebration. The picture is Megan, Dr. Abbey (in the middle) and Sarah following the ceremony. We then took a flying trip back to the Lake of ... read more

Walked off another map yesterday, only two more maps and we are out of VA! Not a bad night’s sleep for a primitive camp site. There was some slope, but nothing we couldn't deal with. Those of you who know CC will be amazed at how she has no problems waking up at 6-6:30AM and functioning. She really isn't a morning person, but life on the trail has forced her into it :-) We were on the trail by 8:30AM. We bounced between 2,700' and 3,200' all the way to US52 into the town of Bland. We had a great pace and made the seven miles in 3.5hrs. The trail had plenty of switchbacks and few rocks. We crossed over I77 and when I saw the "Runaway Truck Ramp" on the northbound side, I knew ... read more

Early rise again and on the trail by 8:15AM. Restful nights sleep. We met the first NoBo about 50' from our camp. Dingo said he left the Jenkins Shelter real early to get ahead of the crowd. Said there were a dozen folks there last night and he wanted to beat them all to town. The trail was supposed to cross VA 610 then criss-cross Little Wolf Creek for almost five miles, but it has been relocated. We walked down the road a piece and then went almost straight up on the old "High Water" detour trail. We went from 2,500' to 3,200' really quick. The whole day seemed like all we did was walk up hill. We were up on Garden Mountain, which also divides Tazewell and Bland counties. The day was long with varied ... read more

We got home last night after battling all the traffic coming back into DC. I spent some time uploading pictures and my blogs, and basically just chilling out, mostly because I knew today would be packed. But then I couldn't get to sleep! I was absolutely exhausted and could not nod off. So my plans for today have been kind of scrapped because I'm just so wiped out. I did manage to get up and hit the gym today. I need to do that every morning, and Jerry suggested I take my headphones down and walk on the treadmill during Rachael Ray. So I did! Easy as pie! I just ran to pick Ginger up from boarding, and I've got to say she's lost her darn mind. She screamed all the way home and tried to ... read more
