We arrived in Salt Lake City around 11 and went straight to the Tracy Aviary in Liberty Park. The area was very nice and we enjoyed the aviary with lots of different birds. Then we proceded to the Museum of Natural History on the campus of University of Utah. The book we are listening to has a creature called a dire wolf and we saw it's skeleton. Hungry we found The Market Grill. The inside reminded me of a viking ship and the appetizer we had was watermelon drizzled with balsamic vineger topped with basil and goat cheese. Tasted a whole lot better than it sounds. We had noticed signs for an art exhibit at the Museum of Fine Art, From Monet to Picasso. Highly recommend it. Still to early to check into our hotel we ... read more

Starting out at 7:00 am we made tracks for Utah. The Bridger Teton National Forrest gave way to rolling hills and beautiful countryside as we made our way to Salt Lake. This seemingly endless drive through ranch land sporting llama and deer farms was interesting, yet timeless. These small-town communities sprouting out of the plains are a testament to the hardiness of Americans. Arriving in Salt Lake City was a shock to the body. It was 44 degrees in Jackson Hole when we left and 104 degrees in Salt Lake when we arrived around 1:30 pm. The helpful KOA staff assisted us in securing directions to the nearest transmission specialist. The Chrysler dealer was unfriendly and unwilling to help but we found quite the opposite reception when calling Aamco. Since we had to tow the vehicle ... read more

Challenges make you discover things about yourself that you never really knew. They're what make the instrument stretch-what make you go beyond the norm. I realized that I haven’t written about my experience at all since I’ve been here in Salt Lake, so here is a somewhat long blog entry catching you up… To start off I just want to make sure everybody is on the same page and knows what my 4th project is. We are working at a summer camp, Camp Kostopulos or Camp K for short. Camp K is a week long summer camp for people with disabilities. We just finished our second week of camp, with campers there. Our first week was for adults with mental disabilities and last week was teens with mental disabilities. I would just like to state that ... read more

First of all I feel the need to apologize to the entire state of Utah for my low expectations I had coming into it. Admittedly, the first 50 miles or so coming out of Nevada didn’t look too encouraging. Barren salt flats that would make even the bravest pioneer have to question what the heck he was trying to discover on the other side. I think I would have just turned around. So after a full day’s drive we made it into Salt Lake City around 9 o’clock Wed and found a place where we could park the RV for the night until we could get a better chance to explore the city in the daylight. A good friend Dyylyn (aka Bryant Strain) found us and hung out for a while and we had a good ... read more

The yucca plant flowers only once a year. The buds are just coming out for the springtime and it is a fantastic sight to see those mammoth brown mountains dotted with white yucca and the purple and yellow wildflowers (California lilac, lupine, and wallflowers). Words like “fantastic” and “awesome” take on a different meaning here. There is no trace of insincerity or hyperbole when those words are used to describe what I have seen and experienced every day for the past few weeks. As our van winds down the mountain on our way to Utah, I feel a deeper appreciation for everything I am seeing out the windows, compared to my observations during our first trip up the mountain from the valley below. The last two weeks of Phase Three were physically and mentally exhausting. I ... read more

Two exciting days at Utah deserts brought a craving for more of it inside us! However, we had an evening flight back to the Bay Area from Salt Lake City on Monday. We reached Salt Lake City on Monday morning around 2:15 am and stayed at Metropolitan Inn in the downtown. We checked-in and crashed to the beds. To our great surprise, they had “tempurpedic” mattresses! It was so comfortable! Not to mention, we over slept the next morning and woke up just half an hour before the check-out time! We called the front desk and requested one hour extension for check-out! We found an Indian restaurant nearby. When we reached there, we found out that it was closed due to the long weekend. Luckily, we found an Indo-Nepali restaurant “Himalayan Kitchen” next to it! They ... read more

let me start off with this: i’m exhausted.in my heart, in my immune system, in my brain. i haven’t been away from matthew for more than a day in a long time. it was SO WEIRD not to be holding him last night. it really hit me around 9:30pm because that’s usually when he is pretty active; he baby-talks and smiles well he smiles all the time, even when he was sick and vomitting all the time. the only time he wasn’t smiling a lot was when he was almost dead. he didn’t really move or make any facial expressions those couple of days. ick it makes me feel sick to think about it. and is really lively before his bottle and sleeping...also, i think i took too much mucinex for my chest cough in a ... read more

Natalie and I arrived into Salt Lake City Tuesday evening. We stayed with my friend Ann at her apartment and she was gracious enough to let us borrow her car for the week. Unfortunately, we had an accident as, I was backing out of her garage. I did not realize how tight her garage was and hit the side mirror backing out of the garage. Already off to a great start we stopped at See n Ski for Natalie’s rental gear and discount lift tickets for the resorts. As, we drove up to Park City the snow was falling, which caused the drive to be slower. We also had to avoid the semis, which stopped in the middle of the interstate to put on chains. We arrived at Deer Valley and pulled up to the base ... read more

Posted by: Onaxthiel Ogden looked like a nice place to explore, but we had a deadline to meet and one planned stop to make before we left the state of Utah. The largest island on the Great Salt Lake is called Antelope Island, and it is a massive state park and wildlife preserve. I was aware of the island for another reason. On October 29th, 1992, an Air Force Special Operations helo crashed about one mile off the northern point of the island in poor weather at night. The bird was carrying the command section of the training exercise being conducted, consisting of the commanders of first and third Ranger battalions, The commander of the Air Force squadron participating in the exercise, a company first sergeant, Air Force Operators and crew, and two lower enlisted Ranger ... read more

Whew. Made it to Salt Lake City. Bill, Tanya and Kaelee drove me through icy roads to SLC. The ride was fun - music was bizarre (Zorn/Firsell/Lewis), and accidents were plentiful. Found a jeep on the side of the road that had spun out of control... headlights facing the wrong way and all. Had a mac and cheese with Wendy and Hot Chocolate with Becky P. It's now 1:11am - we leave for the airport in 4 hours, flight in 6 hours. I'd better get what sleep I can - if I don't I will probably be sick tomorrow. Wish me luck!... read more
