September 7 Travelled to Nashville today. Quite a long drive. Went as a group to dinner at Wild Horse Saloon. Had a nice meal and good entertainment from a singer Gwen Sebastian, Bought a couple of her CD's as Joyce liked the music. After dinner, went on a tour of a few honky tonk bars, which was very interesting. September 8 Headed for Memphis today. Stopped at Casey Jones (fabled railway engineer) museum for pit stop, and contnued on our way. Arrived im Memphis and went straight to Graceland, after a stop at the motel where Martin Luther King Jnr was assassinated. Graceland was amazing, took heaps of pictures. We then went to Sun Records where Elvis really started his career, as did Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison Johnny Cash amongst others. Also passed Stax records where ... read more

Another long Greyhound journey sat in front of “The Twits” (overweight and smelling a little on the pungent side) a mother and son duo with a girlfriend, sister, daughter or cousin (we couldn’t tell; very in-bred) in tow who didn’t say a word but the other 2 sure made up for it, talking about the same things over and over for 10 hours – GREAT! We were relieved to reach Memphis where we had a couch-surf set up with Chris, who lived about 20 miles from the city so we caught a cab and nearly had heart attacks when it cost $40!!! Chris was very welcoming and he lived with 4 other house mates (Vance, Baker, Tom and Bret who were all nice blokes) and his dog Cooper who’s nature and mannerisms reminded us so much ... read more

DAYS 24-25-26 Memphis Once in Memphis, the first thing I did was to go and visit Graceland, the house where Elvis Presley lived for a big part of his life. It is a massive complex, very commercialised with lots of shops and different exhibitions some of them not very interesting. However, the house tour is well worth the visit. The house itself is amazing due to the way in which Elvis decided to decorate the different rooms. His play room, his kitchen, his living room etc they are all still the same way they were when Elvis died. You can only visit the ground floor and not the upstairs which is a bit disappointing really. Some of the rooms in the house host exhibits with Elvis’ dresses and all his gold, silver and platinum records are ... read more

8/2/11 Memphis, Tennessee I fell in love with Memphis, Tennessee the moment I started driving into it. The highlight of the 146 mile drive from Little Rock was driving on the bridge over the Mississippi River into the city that calls itself the home of the blues and the birthplace of Rock and Roll. I stopped by Memphis to learn more about two of my favorite Kings, Elvis Presley and MLK Jr., both of whom breathed their last breath here. The first stop in Memphis was Graceland, home of Elvis. I am glad I went to Graceland with the expectation that it would be cheesy, tacky and kitchy, because it definitely did not disappoint, although the house itself was smaller than I expected. The tour does not allow access into the upstairs area, but I was ... read more

I have to combine two days worth here as had such a great time last night!! Went out for a wander allong the banks of the Mississippi and to get a feel for downtown Memphis. Did a few pubs on Beale st. and did a superb tour of the gibson guitar factory nearby. They make around 45 hollow bodied guitars a day and you get to see exactly how they're made from lumps of wood to the finished article! Turns out Wednesday is biker night in Beale street! Thousands of harleys and hondas of all description all roar into this closed off street. Live bands rock out of nearly every pub especially BB King's own bar! This coupled with the street party atmosphere led to an amazing night. Earlier on we had gone to the peabody ... read more

Staying with our Couch surfer John was a blast, a man who likes to party about as much as we do, perhaps even more. When we arrived to meet up with him we weren't too sure what it was going to be like but we were greeted by tight security and it seemed like we would never make it up to the apartment (John left a key for us). Eventually we shook hands with the man, I still think of him as "The Man", cool guy. We went out for some food to a Mexican place to watch the Mav's play...I think every person in Dallas is a huge fan of the Mav's (Think grand Final day back home?) well at first we didn't know who the Mav's even were but now we are fully educated ... read more

Arriving at Graceland, the home of Elvis, was a time in my life that I don't think that I will ever forget. I'll give you a rundown quickly in case you never make it to Elvis Presley Boulevard or the heartbreak hotel. Etched into my memory is the drive into Graceland, the gates adorned with loving fans messages and names- a sign that the "King" is still in many peoples minds to this day and I guess, selling more albums and movies as I think he always will. Once you look at the mansion it's really not as big as today's stars houses, it was big yet somehow humble and modest at the same time, and walking in it became apparent that I guess a somewhat 'normal' family had lived here once upon a time. The ... read more

Very sorry to leave Nashville where I had a lot of fun. Got about 2.5 hours sleep before waking up and getting the Greyhound. I think Americans are very friendly and chatty. There's always someone starting up a conversation, though with 2.5 hours sleep I didn't feel very chatty. A couple of characters I met at the Greyhound bus station : Cowboy Guy: This man was about 60 something and looked like he'd just stepped out of a John Wayne Western. I made a mental record of his getup: cowboy boots - check, denim jeans - check, cowboy shirt - check, neck scarf - check, cowboy hat - check, Western buckle - check. Turns out he comes from a ranch in Wyoming and traveled 8 days on Greyhound to reach the Kentucky derby. Didn't seem ... read more

Whew! After weeks of tornado warnings, floods, nail biting late night NBA Grizzlie games, and President Obama's visit to give the graduation address to the 155 African -American students at Booker T. Washington High School it is finally June. I could do with a little less excitement. June 3rd I am out of here! For several years my travel companion,Val, ( from New orleans) and I have talked about trying a river cruise. It is part of our plan to be able to continue to travel as we get older and older. So this is Plan B going into effect for the first time. We chose a float down the Danube with Grand Circle, a company we have both traveled with many times. All together now let's hum the waltz that one learned when a beginning ... read more

To all who have called or written, thank you for your kind and concerned thoughts. I am fine. I live in what is called Midtown- about a 5 minute drive and up a 60 - 75 foot bluff from the mighty Mississippi. The river is very impressive as it spreads miles and miles into Arkansas and the town of West Memphis ( no connection to us). There has been serious flooding further north and south in basically any low lying areas. Those who live near several smaller rivers have also had problems as they have all overflowed their banks. The major concern is the contaminated water that will be the residue after the waters subside- oh, and snakes, lots and lots of snakes. But here is some good news- the Memphis Grizzlies- our up to now ... read more
