We started the day out by having breakfast at our hotel, the Best Western Galleria. They offer a free hot breakfast bar. Then Rhonda's brother Rick picked us up, and we headed out to Graceland. Let me tell you, I am not and Elvis fan, I do like some of his songs, but I am not a huge fan. I have to say this is a must see. After visiting, I have a new respect for the man and his music. We spent the $34 each to see take the Platinum tour, which gave us access not only to the mansion, but also to the cars and planes. I had seen the tour of Graceland on CMT, but it is not the same as seeing it in person. We were there for about 2 hours. Then ... read more

I'm a little late getting this entry in, but we we out late last night. We left St. Louis at about 9:00 in the morning and headed to Memphis. On the way, we stopped for lunch at Lambert's in Sikeston, MO. It was a pretty cool place, the portions were huge, and this is the place where they walk around with side dishes and serve them family style. They also throw the rolls to anyone who wants one. Then we headed in to Memphis to our hotel. After getting a little rest, we headed out to dinner with Rhonda's brother Rick. He took us to a place called Rafferty's. Al and I both had the catfish, Rhonda had some pasta, and Denise had a chicken breast. The food was really good there too. Then we headed ... read more

After enjoying the Nashville country music scene - a scene based around a genre of music that is, quite honestly, of no real interest to me - I was fairly excited to move onto Memphis, the home of rock and roll, and the birthplace of many a soul star's rise. Unfortunately, my initial foray into this historic town held no such romance or musical power for me, as I found myself thrust from the busy streets and morning sunshine of Nashville, into its neighbour's bitter cold and empty streets. It was more than two hours (a time that included two visitor centres and more than two bus stops) before Fin and I found ourselves at the correct bus stop, and by the time we had reached our hostel in the out-of-town Cooper-Young neighbourhood, the digits ... read more

November 8, 2009 “Before Elvis, there was nothing” … John Lennon. Today we went to Graceland and speaking as one who didn’t really know what to expect, it was just wonderful. Bill dropped Donna and I off…he and John had no desire, and we went on the tour. Of course the entire area is built up with souvenir shops, restaurants, souvenir shops, museums, souvenir shops….One wonders what the area was like when Elvis bought the place in the 60s. Graceland itself is somewhat modest as far as estates go although the house sits on some lovely acreage with stables and corals for the horses that are still kept there. Touring the inside of the house was like stepping back into the 60’s and 70’s as everything has been left exactly how it was in 1977. Elvis’ ... read more

We left Indiana after halloween with a week ahead of no college parties. They were great fun but to get back into tourist mode was great. We headed down to Memphis from Indiana hoping that it would take us around 5 hours, it ended up taking about 10 and Norman was feeling pretty ropey, shaking like a drunk in need of alcohol! In the end we stopped just outside Memphis and checked into a super 8 motel. These hotels are just like the hotel from my name is earl, horrible! The next morning we headed to Graceland, the main reason for coming to Memphis. The house was just off a main road, not what we thought it would be like. The grounds were huge and we parked across the road and were shuttle over. The tour ... read more

Mark posting: As Liz mentioned we had an exhausting day of packing on Thursday and we followed that up with a marathon day of driving beginning very early on Friday. More than seventeen hours after leaving DC we arrived in Memphis, TN safely and with all our belongings in tow. We found our hotel, the Holiday Inn Select, with only a minor hiccup - that being when the Garmin proudly announced we had arrived at our destination in the parking lot of an Olive Garden. I could give the little lady (it's a female voice on the Garmin and I call her Alice) the benefit of the doubt but she's steered me wrong on prior trips and distrust lingers. Fortunately, the hotel was in sight up the road and Liz boldly took the lead "bringing us ... read more

Another one of those spur of the moment things. We had a long weekend and Tennessee seemed like the perfect fit. Why not Kansas or Minnesota or Florida? I don't know. We do things just be random - most of the time. It's always funny when we go on these adventures. We laugh because the first question many people ask is, "Do you have family there?" We respond, "Nope!" and the puzzled faces are always amusing...the fact that we would pick a place on a map where we don't have a personal connection! Unheard of! On to Tennesse: it was rainy our first day there, but driving aroung NASHVILLE we found Krispy Kreme (they closed the one in Albuquerque, but since then they have been reopened,) so we knew that TN would be good to us. ... read more

Day 8 I awoke in a dingy hotel room, but then I went to sleep in one as well. The bed sucked, and there was no matters pad, just a too small too thin sheet. Alas, that is all a distance nightmare tonight. Four states distance. I started in Missouri, took a bridge into Illinois and another into Tennessee and stopped at the post office and the cross at Fort Jefferson Kentucky. This monument overlooks the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. The photos do not do it justice. The amount of water that flows east of the Continental Divide and into these life givers is daunting to a mere mortal man. There is work beyond man. I pulled into Cairo Illinois. I was heart broken here. This was a wonderful town, full of southern ... read more

Arriving in Memphis I meet my newest couchsurfing host, Carolina. She picks me up from the station and takes me to her studio apartment. The next day is filled with downtown Memphis. Well, that was the plan. What I didn't take into account was the heat. On the other hand, sitting in a Memphis bar is not the worst thing in the world - be it night or day. Later the visit to the Civil Rights museum, situated in the hotel that bore witness of Martin Luther King's death, blows my mind. Amazingly done and so big and interesting that three hours are not nearly enough to get through it. After a pulled pork sandwich Carolina and me head towards the downtown bars for some music and drinks. Graceland is definitely Memphis' biggest attraction and Elvis ... read more

Southaven is where we stayed the night. It's just outside Memphis Tennessee. We left the hotel about 10am and arrived at Graceland at 10:30. The 14-acre estate features the mansion that was home to Elvis from 1957 until his death in 1977, as well as an Elvis Presley Museum, stables, and Elvis’ final resting place in the Meditation Garden.. The white columned mansion seems almost modest from the outside but you can see that it was far from modest inside. Of course it's been years since Elvis's death so the decor was of the time when he was alive. More than 30 years after his death, Graceland has been preserved as a kind of time capsule to give visitors an insight into what life was like when Elvis was King. The upstairs level is closed to ... read more
