Gleich nach einer Meile, auf der Bruecke ueber den Mississippi River beginnt Arkansas. The Natural State, 27th groesster, Bevoelkerung: 2,7 Mill (33rd). So really aentique .... lovely. Was auf den er ... read more

We got up this morning in St. Louis, but we were moving slow! We made it to Memphis about lunchtime. WE had lunch outside by the river at the Welcome Center. There were some pretty cool statues inside the BB King Elvis Presley Welcome center; the kids thought it was neat. I threatened the boys within an inch of their lives when I read the sign that said, "Don't Touch! Alarm Protected" That's liike a flashing sign BEGGING them to touch!! Outside, there was a really cool egg given by the Stained Glass Society of Memphis or something like that. It was so neat! I thought of Noelle and my mom. Noelle, because, well, because she's Noelle, and Mom because she loves stained glass. Anyway, after that, we rode around Memphis for a while. We saw ... read more

It's 7:30 AM. I'm sitting in my office at work. It's my last day here. This job's been good to me. I've made more money here than any other I've ever had, and I've been endowed with full day-to-day control of every aspect of this furniture store's operations. Being the boss is good. But this is not my purpose. I'm quitting the best job I've ever had so that I can travel through South America for 4 months. About a year ago I stepped back and took a look at my life. I had recently gotten promoted to Store Manager younger than anybody else in the company. I considered most of the other managers and was a little frightened of what I might become. Boring, stagnant, repetitive, and old. I was not ready to resign myself ... read more

Hey this is my first entry and I'm super excited because I have actually decided what I will be doing for the new year. It was such a tough choice with so many great families to choose from and so little time to decide, but I am going to be living in Berlin, Germany with a wonderful family. I will be an Aupair for the family and take German courses to improve my non-existent German. :) I will be arriving on the 9th of July, but I have lots more moves to make before that time. I am going to be graduating from college this upcoming week with my BBA in Marketing and then I will be finishing up my internship in June. After that I will move home and get started packing for the year. ... read more

Saturday Night - April 18th Woke up this morning to Elvis music which constantly plays throughout the hotel and had some hotel breakfast (English muffin and what they like to call juice). We showered up and headed into the city. We didn’t really have any plans for many things so we were pretty much winging it. Parked the car by the Mississippi River, really weird but it was free and in a well lit area, good enough for us. We walked up Beale Street which was awesome. They had a Corvette car show which closed down the whole street. We were unsure how you would maneuver around the street by car even if it was open. The whole street was filled with bars, food, and music. These are all things that we like. We walked up ... read more

HH - A-Town - Bingo, Alabama - Memphis Today we drove about 650 miles or so. Ten hours in the car. We stopped once for gas when we crossed into the central time zone! The most impressive part about that is the cell phones switched automatically upon the Central Time Zone sign. This is officially the farthest west Pete has ever been. We started the day in SC and had to back track a little bit back into Georgia to take I-16 to Atlanta before getting on I-75 and then 78 and then 240 and then 40. Luckily for pretty much the rest of the way out west we will be on I-40. One entertaining thing is watching large bugs land on the windshield. If you don’t have to chip bugs off the front of the ... read more

046 - USA - Memphis 03/23/09 - 03/25/09 “I'm going to Graceland... Graceland... Memphis, Tennessee...” -Paul Simon Ever wonder how we chose the destinations for our round-the-world trip? It wasn't a scientific process but we did have some selection criteria. First, we wanted to go to places that we've never visited before (except for Greece which was our halfway 'recharge' point). So, as cool as Aussies are, I've been there, so Oz was out and Indonesia in. Next, we chose places that we'd rather not go with a family in tow... so New Zealand out, India in. We didn't want any English speaking countries... the United Kingdom out, Ethiopia in. Finally, if there ever was a time to travel to quote 'dangerous' destinations, now was it. Virgin Islands out, Middle East in! Unfortunately, all that selection ... read more

Really, this is the last( I hope) housekeeping detail that I have to take care on this site before leaving.... 1. If you no longer want to receive the 'blog' then write me an e-mail at: gunga5@juno.com I will delete your address. 2. Some people have said they have not been able to access the blog. You must have the address: webmaster@travelblog.org in your address book or else your server may delete it as SPAM. Hope that takes care of that little problem. Val and I are off to Vietnam ( Hanoi, HaLong Bay, Hue, and HoiAn- notice a pattern there?), then to Siem Reap in Cambodia, and lastly to Vientiane and Luang Prabang in Laos. We are traveling independently with only our hotels, airport pickups and air flights between countries pre-arranged. It should make for ... read more

“Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or the darkness of destructive selfishness. This is the judgement. Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?” Martin Luther King Jr. It was tough to leave the sunny south but it was time to continue on my journey. I would be heading north for only a short time. My first stop is Atlanta Georgia to continue my journey in Martin Luther King Jr. footsteps. The first step was to see the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC where he gave his “I have a dream” speech. Now I am in the city where he was born. I arrived in Atlanta about 4:15pm on Sunday December 28th and checked into the hostel. I didn’t do anything but hang ... read more
