Just travelling the US alone for 5 weeks.

DAYS 34-35-36 I arrived to Washington DC from Chicago at about 11ish and got the shuttle bus to my hotel. I managed to get a very good rate again through bookit.com and my hotel in Washington was the Hilton by Dupont Circle. Needless to say the hotel was absolutely superb. I had a fantastic kingbed bedroom and the hotel had all the facilities you can expect from the Hilton plus it is located in a very central area of Washington DC. As a curiosity, a taxi driver told me that this was the hotel where Ronald Reagan's assessination attempt took place in 1981. Anyway, after I got to the hotel and checked in, I unpacked my stuff and got ready to go out. My mission that day was to find a bar that showed Barca's game. ... read more

DAYS 31-32-33 CHICAGO I checked out from the motel and started driving to Chicago. I had book a hotel in downtown using hotwire.com which proved to be a great site. Basically you can decide how many starts you want your hotel to be and the location but you don’t see the name of the hotel until you actually book it. That way you can have a prime hotel 40 or 50% cheaper than the normal rate. The reason behind this is that hotels don’t want to publicise that they have many rooms available because it doesn’t look nice on them, so they hide the name until you’ve actually book it. So I book a 4.5 stat hotel in downtown Chicago, just yards from Michigan Av in the North River neighbourhood. Because I’d spent 2 days less ... read more

DAYS 29-30 Saint Louis The next morning I got up and after grabbing some breakfast at the motel, doughnuts and orange juice, I walked to downtown. I had planned the day quite well this time, I was going to the City’s museum first, then downtown, then the Arch and finally I had a ticket for my first baseball game ever, St Louis Cardinals vs Minnesota Brewers. I caught a bus to the city’s museum and that was a mistake. Not catching a bus, the temperature in St Louis was quite high not as bad as in Texas, Louisiana or Mississippi, but still in the high 80s and quite humid. The mistake was going to the City’s museum because as cool as it is, it’s basically a museum for kids. It’s got some kind of rides, funny ... read more

DAYS 27-28 NASHVILLE The day after I got up at at 10 and packed up again to drive to Nashville. I checked out and got my stuff in the car. By the way, one thing I haven’t mentioned is the fact that in the US quite a few hotels downtown charge you to park your car. This is something I’d never experienced before so I was quite surprised and the charges aren’t cheap either. In Memphis I paid $14 for each night and in New Orleans the charge was $35 per night! However I, somehow, got a promotion and only ended up paying $22 for the whole stay. That saved me more than $80. Guess I was lucky. The 3 hours drive to Nashville, the country music capital of the world, was very quiet and relaxed ... read more

DAYS 24-25-26 Memphis Once in Memphis, the first thing I did was to go and visit Graceland, the house where Elvis Presley lived for a big part of his life. It is a massive complex, very commercialised with lots of shops and different exhibitions some of them not very interesting. However, the house tour is well worth the visit. The house itself is amazing due to the way in which Elvis decided to decorate the different rooms. His play room, his kitchen, his living room etc they are all still the same way they were when Elvis died. You can only visit the ground floor and not the upstairs which is a bit disappointing really. Some of the rooms in the house host exhibits with Elvis’ dresses and all his gold, silver and platinum records are ... read more

DAYS 23-24 Mississipi I had a good night sleep in NOLA and decided to stay in bed until check out time and then I started driving towards my first destination in the Mississippi. I was expecting a bit more from my drive through the Mississippi to be honest, the views are very monotonous, everything is very spread out and some of the places I visited were deserted even in the middle of the day. But I’m still glad I visited it and maybe I should have planned a bit better my itinerary and being a bit more concise about the places that I wanted to visit and what I wanted to see. My first stop was Natchez where I arrived at about 2 pm. I went straight to the visitor centre and after watching a 15 ... read more

DAYS 21-22 NEW ORLEANS I woke up quite early and drove a bit less than 2 hours to reach New Orleans. The drive is very cool as you drive by the swamps and you can see how the bridges that go on for miles and miles are literally built over the wet lands. Quite an experience! I got to New Orleans with no problems and found my hotel that was located right in the middle of Bourbon st, the most famous street in NOLA and where all the action is. The hotel is called Royal Sonesta and it was really really nice. Old French style deco but with all the amenities including again, swimming pool and gym. I left my stuff in the room and went for a walk outside. I checked Bourbon st, which looked ... read more

DAYS 19-20 Fort Worth-Dallas After the long night out in Austin I woke up feeling a bit rough. And the cold was still there which didn’t help. I got in the car anyway and drive about 3 hours to Fort Worth. On the way I stopped in Waco to put some petrol and I went to McDonalds to have something to eat. It’s the first time since in the US that I’ve been to any of the major fast food chains so it is not too bad. And the main reason I went to McDonalds is because they have free wifi and I still hadn’t booked the hotel for Fort Worth. I wanted something close to downtown and the stockyards but I couldn’t make my mind up. I finally booked the Marriott residence Inn after reading ... read more

DAY 16-17-18 TEXAS San Antonio – Bandera - Austin I arrived at San Antonio’s airport at about 10ish after a 2.40 hours flight in a very small plane, just of about 50 seats. Collected my bag and went to the Alamo rent-a-car office at the airport where they sorted out my car rental in a very speedy and efficient way. Then I got the shuttle bus from outside for a 5 minutes ride to the car depot where I could pick my car. As I had a full size car, I had 3 option, a Chevy Malibu, a Nissan Almera or a Toyota Corolla. I thought that since I was going to be driving from San Antonio all the way to Chicago, I’d need a good car, not that much for the room but for the ... read more

DAY 14-15 San Diego I got up at 9 on Monday morning, packed up and said my goodbyes to Joyce and set off towards San Diego. According to the tomtom it would take around 2 hours so it wasn’t too bad of a drive. Again, getting out of LA was quite tricky, no problems if you have a gps but the traffic, even on a Monday morning no rush hour was pretty bad. It was, however, a glorious sunny day and I was looking forward to enjoying the drive. Once out of LA it is quite a nice drive which follows the coastline and passes a few beaches quite popular with surfers who for the looks of it, camp there over night. After an hour and a half drive I stopped in a resting area as ... read more
