Day 3- No internet service for a while - thus the delay in this blog entry - sorry. We started the day by going to the Mammoth site in Hot Springs, SD. This paleotological site is where they discovered an ancient sink hole with Mammoth bones when excavating for a housing development in the 1970's. Since then they have discovered the remains of over 50 Mammoths - 2 of them Wooly Mammoths and the majority Columbian Mammoths - much larger then the wooly's. We took a guided tour of the now indoor site where active excavation continues. It was pretty neat. We then went to Evan's Plunge which is a hot srings fed gravel bottomed indoor pool with slide, water volley ball, water basketball and other fun things. Ben spent much of his time trying ... read more

Wind and Caves After seeing Mt Rushmore, I ate dinner in Hill City and camped at Wind Cave National Park. Driving along the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway in the dark where you know a buffalo may be hanging in the middle of the road is quite imposing. Also, with California plates, I'd heard from many people that I don't want to do a single thing to warrant a ticket, so I drove cautiously. Here I set up camp for three nights. This park is terrific. The campsites are comfortable, the people who work here very friendly, and it is uncrowded. It is a mix of prairie and ponderosa pines. The herd of buffalo are of original buffalo stock (not interbred with cows), so they are very special and warrant a fence around the whole park. I ... read more

Yesterday we were able to drive by Mt. Rushmore and stop and take pictures but because we weren't willing to park 3 miles away and hoof it up the highway, we decided not to go into the park with the other 20-30,000 people visiting for the holiday. We got lucky today. Elliot suggested we drive by for another look and since it was early morning (my early morning being 9:30) the park wasn't crowded. We not only easily and quickly got into the park, but Millie (just by pure luck based on other RVs which arrived before us) was parked right outside of the front entrance. Better than handicapped parking. Hmmm... on second thought, maybe the park rangers assumed Millie needed a brake. Kevin did all the activities to again become a Jr. Ranger. If ... read more

We haven't crossed the finish line yet, because we aren't home. But we have visited every destination on our itinerary with the exception of Zion which we traded for a couple of extra days in Sedona. Gladly. It's been almost three weeks. Elbow to Elbow. We haven't killed the kids or each other and they haven't run away with the circus. In fact, tonight, we're sitting about five miles from Mt Rushmore having seen both the national monument and the Crazy Horse Monument earlier this afternoon/evening. Early today, we did the Deadwood Museum and a Gold Mine, where the kids panned for gold. Mark popped the celebratory bottle of champagne after the kids went to bed guaranteeing trouble to come on the way home. The vacation is essentially over. All we have to do is ... read more

Untitled To get from Ten Sleep to Buffalo, Wyoming (and then to where we are now -- South Dakota's Black Hills -- you have to travel over Big Horn Mountain and climb to 9,966 feet through Powder River Pass. While it is only about 70 miles, it took us nearly 2 hours with Millie traveling winding uphill mountain roads for half of that time. Alot of anxiety on our part for Millie, especially when we needed to stop half-way up the mountain because of some new, nasty sounds coming from her. After a rest, though, she did fine and we had a long stop in Buffalo before finishing the Wyoming leg of the trip. There are more hills than people in Wyoming. We saw antelope and cattle along the drive and had what felt like a ... read more

June 27 On my way to Sturgis to ride through the Black Hills National Park. Stayed in Billings MT last night and picked up the necessary maps at the AAA to make it to the east coast. While I was at the Travel Café downtown Billings, I met the proud owner of a Tomberlin MadAss 50 two stroke scooter. Very cool! June 29 I stayed the previous two nights in Spearfish and the tonight I’m staying in a roach motel in Sturgis. As Craig pointed out, the voicemail was to "leave a damn message!". Beautiful riding roads weave throughout the park. Lot of RVs and traffic are on the road now that school is out. Once again I have to watch out for those deer popping on the road. I visited Mount Rushmore, another American icon. ... read more

I must start this entry off with one of the weirdest nights out I have ever had, and I apologise in advance for upsetting any Americans who might read this, but honestly you couldn't make up some of the sights we saw in a bar in Deadwood last night. My name is Earl and his brother were there, and their dancing alone could probably fill another paragraph, every other person had really bad facial hair in every number of different styles, all wearing vest tops and baseball caps. Honestly a fantastic night of people watching. We had already had a problem with the hotel booked as they only had a Queen Room available despite the fact that a twin room had been booked, and although I like Mark, not really interested in spooning with him. Fortunately ... read more

Expected an uneventful long drive over to Rapid City to pick Mark up from the airport, but yet again surprised by some of the sights in between. Funniest moment of the day caused by about 400 cows and 8/9 Cowboys herding them down the road and holding up traffic for about 10 mins, finally one of these guys on the horses beckons the cars through, so we had to inch through the cows very slowly almost felt like giving one of the cows a pat on the way through, but didn't really ant to wind the window down incase I got a pat of my own (all groan now). ... read more

Who knew you could see Michelangelo's David in Sioux Falls, SD??? Well, you can! According to the city, Sioux Falls is one of only 2 places in the world with full size reproductions of the statue of David by Michelangelo (in doing some research, it appears there may be others in other forms, like plaster, etc.). The replica is located in Fawick Park in Sioux Falls courtesy of a donation by its owners. According to some literature, there was a bit of a controvery with putting the nude David in such an "exposed" area because it could lead to a lowering of moral values in Sioux Falls. Luckily, smarter heads prevailed and the wonderful statue was placed in the downtown park, although done "tastefully" so that he is not visible by passing traffic and trees cover ... read more
