Day 26 - August 30, 2006 Wednesday, August 30 This morning was nice and breezy. We haven’t had really cold weather since leaving Yellowstone (where lows are routinely in the low to mid-thirties). Scott and Austin played basketball, then we ate KOA pancakes (only $2 for all-you-can-eat). Then we played mini-golf, checked out the KOA store, and readied the RV for travel. We left around 11 am and headed for the Minuteman Missile National Historic Site. These sites were manned by two Air Force officers 24/7. These sites promised “Worldwide delivery in 30 minutes or less”. Even more impressive than the SR-71 Blackbird. Badlands National Park is probably one of the most desolate, barren places on the earth. Even sand-dune-filled deserts have more life than this place. It was hot and windy. We didn’t even see ... read more

Crazy Horse is a monument still under construction after 50 years and they only have the face completed. Scott and I are not sure that it will be complete in our lifetime. It is impressive now and will be quite a sight to see when complete.... read more

If you didn't know already I've moved much of my pictures to Jeber.com http://jeber.com/Members/Oscar/ I don't have much time for writing since I'm starting to do more photography and work at home is busier than all. I still get some travel in and last week I drove to the Smokey Mountains in North Carolina and spent about a week down there staying in Nashville, TN, camping out near St. Louis, MO and a night in Omaha on the way back. Just made it back for Frontier Days in White River. I bought a new digital camera before I left for NC and have taken about 900 pictures in the last week. Hope everyone's doing good. talk to ya later.... read more

After spending the morning in the Badlands, we continued our journey West through South Dakota to our next KOA campground in Hot Springs. With temperatures soaring to near 100F, we were not looking forward to setting up camp in the heat. Fortunately this campground had a nice pool (with no kids at the time) so once the work was done a cool dip sorted us right out! The next day we intended to drive North through Wind Cave National Park and Custer State Park to Mount Rushmore which was about 50 miles away. In the end, we took so long driving through the parks and pulling off at every opportunity that we had to save Rushmore for the next day. Wind Cave NP sits atop the Wind Cave, which is one of the longest and most ... read more

First in this trio of wonders is ‘The Badlands’, and take it from me, this place is like nothing else on earth. Many a poet has tried to encapsulate the awe of this place into words…all have failed miserably as words alone cannot describe or prepare you for the sheer weirdness of this unique natural spectacle. The experts consider The Badlands to be a pocket sized version of the Grand Canyon, although we can’t confirm that as yet…if the Grand Canyon is even half as impressive as The Badlands we are certain to experience geological perfection. Without meaning to sound like a geek, (I read all this in a book) but also not denying the fact that I am…some 35 million years ago the whole area was an ocean, many millennia later it became a marsh ... read more

As the title suggests…now for something a bit different. As we have just passed the 5,000 mile mark, I thought that I would celebrate it with a few pictures taken whilst in transit from one place to the next. You may think that this blog is a bit odd…even if you do, I am certain that you will still find that the pictures themselves hold a certain beauty. Images of such extreme emptiness have an almost mystical nature to them, or at least they do for me anyway. Those of you whom are used to the British motorway network will undoubtedly view these images with envious eyes and plan your trip over here as a matter of extreme urgency…roads like these are few and far between…they need to be enjoyed before they too become blighted by ... read more

There is not much to write about 10 hour drives that start at 2:30pm except that you can make it faster with Western speed limits. The scenery at the beginning was pretty and as we were driving on Saturday both of us could drive. That being said, we arrived in Hill City SD at 11:00pm on Saturday night. When we awoke, it was to an already very hot sunny morning at the J Bar Ranch Campground. We gave ourselves a break and just hung around the campground (most of my earlier catch up blogs that didn’t happen in the Virginian laundry room happened here). Ed took the kids to the nice swimming pool and we just hung around because we all had pretty low energy levels. It seemed too warm to go to Mt Rushmore so ... read more
