We drove to the Badlands with the intention of camping overnight there. After driving through the park, we stopped at the local store to get some water and Gatorade. We were both so frightened by the people inside that we decided it would be best not to spend the night there! Instead, we drove over to Mount Rushmore…. we got there just before the sun was about to set…the weather had cooled off and the crowds were gone. We walked around the area and took some pictures. From there we drove over to Rapid City to spend the night. We got a tent site at the campgrounds and then drove into town to eat dinner. We went to Rapid City brewing company and had their red ale with dinner. We were seated outside, so we listened ... read more

After a REALLY bad roast beef sandwiches at Arby's that we couldn't eat we were off to the Badlands. We arrived just before sunset with a full moon rising. Perfect timing the colors were unbelievable. The landscape takes your breath away, around every turn another spectacular view. At the far end of the park there's a lodge and restaurant we were lucky, although they didn't have any vacancies there the receptionist called the other lodge a mile away just outside the park and they had one room left! How lucky can you get. The cows were in the pasture next to us and a view of the badlands out of our window. Not a bad view to wake up to. ... read more

Another day another state. Lunch in Cody Wyoming, dinner in Keystone South Dakota! Sunday we made the obligatory pilgrimage to Mount Rushmore. It is impressive but once you've gone to the main viewing area and taken your pictures (10 minutes) that's it. On our way out a random man directed us to nearby Custer State Park that you can drive through and at one of the tunnels actually get a picture of Mount Rushmore framed in the distance. At that point we decided to check out the park which also has a buffalo herd. Another great find. The buffalo here are vaccinated and culled so the herd remains at a constant number. The roundup is October 7th and you can actually watch. We also ran into a burro jam. The herd, mostly mothers and babies were ... read more

When I was about 6 the movie “Calamity Jane” starring Doris Day and Howard Keale was released. This was the first summer that my mom worked full time and her dad, my granddad took care of me. The cinema was just around the corner from his house and my friends and I went to see the “Calamity Jane” Tuesday matinee. Matinee showings were held just three times a week and I begged for the sixpence to go back on Thursday. Then I begged my parents to take me back again on Friday night—because they were really going to enjoy this movie (we didn’t have a TV yet!) I still remember parts of it. When I was driving toward Rapid City I really didn’t realize that Deadwood was in that vicinity. So I was quite delighted and ... read more

After Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks, Shazza and I headed north through the Big Horn Mountains, which were covered in the smoke haze from the ongoing forest fires. We took a detour west to visit the Battle of Little Bighorn National Memorial, better known as "Custer's Last Stand". It was where up to 2000 Sioux warriors defeated the U.S. 7th Cavalry and killed close to 300 soldiers and Crow scouts as they tried to force the Sioux Indians back into the reservations. It would be the last victory for the Plains Indians, led by Sitting Bull and the legendary Crazy Horse. The native ranger gave a passionate presentation of the events leading up to and including the battle, incorporating quotes from those present on both sides. One description upon seeing the Sioux's 20,000 strong herd ... read more

Got back from a trip to South Dakota late last evening. On the agenda was a stayover in Pierre, SD where I had a couple hours to drive around the city. I have been to Pierre several times but it's been a year since my last visit. The town is experiencing a little bit of a building boom with some new retail and housing being built. For a capitol city, it's a small city (about 14,000); however, it is extremely pretty. According to wikipedia, Pierre is one of only 5 state capitols which is not served by an interstate highway system and it is about a half hour from the interstate. There are lots of open areas on the Capitol grounds with various state building located around it. Several memorials, statues and fountains make up the ... read more

We got an early start from our campsite in Custer State Park and headed for the Willife Loop Road - there are over 1600 Buffalo here in the park. The scenery was spectacular and we saw lots of wildlife - but no buffalo. We saw plenty of deer and wild turkeys and burros. We then headed for the Crazy Horse Monument. We spent several hours exploring the museum's artifacts and pictures. We then drove through the Needles Scenic Highway. What a truly awesome experience. The road has spires climbing up the sides of the road and the one land tunnels are very interesting. We decided to go back and try to find the buffalos and we encountered them blocking the highway. The herd had about 80-90 bison in it. Two motorcycles approached the Bison and as ... read more

We had quite a light show during the night. The lightning lit up the night sky from all directions most of the night. The thunder was only severe for a short period and it rained periodically - enough to get every thing soaked including our sleeping bag. Our campsite there was very scenic. We drove through the west end of the Badlands National Park and saw some wildlife inclusing two buffalos. We stopped at several very scenic overlooks and each one was very picturesque. We went to Wall, SD but did not go into Wall's Drug. We did laundry, ate lunch and grocery shopping. Approaching Mt Rushmore there was a lot of hazy smoke in the air. We later learned the smoke is from the wildfires out in WY, MT and ID - just where we ... read more

We started out this morning meeting with an old friend, Troy for breakfast just outside of our campground. We met Megan, his lovely girlfriend. We caught up with the last nine years of his life before saying goodbye and heading on west on 90. We hit periods of rain again today. We saw a lightning bolt hit in one of the cornfields we were passing. It is really flat here. Dave drove another almost 500 miles today, but we finally made it to the Badlands of South Dakota. We were awestruck with the uniqueness of this beautiful land. We camped in the Park and watched a beautiful sunset.... read more

I have really been amazed at all the interesting places here in this area. Mount Rushmore is just the draw to get folks here. There are caves, gold mines, wild-life parks and on and on, in addition to the know attractions. There is a little place called Sturgis, just north of here and each year they host the Sturgis Bike Ride, the locals call it “Sturgis week.” I had never heard of it. It attracts 400,000 motor cycles! I was talking to a lady on my bus tour the other day, she was staying at the Holiday Inn, she told me that there were two groups of bikers that were also staying at there, and one of the groups had shipped their bikes over from Italy and the other from Ireland! Go figure. Thankfully the ... read more
