Countdown to Departure Well, only 10 days until I fly out of Denver International Airport. I have been busy reading about what to bring/not bring and taking care of the things that I need to get done before I leave. I have found lots of websites that document other peoples travels around this region and the more I read, the more I get excited about my trip. For a while I was questioning whether or not I should take my bike for my mode of transportation, however, the more I read other peoples accounts, the more I became convinced that biking was the way to go. It seems to have so many more advantages over being "just another tourist." This is going to be a unique trip, filled with surprises and unexpected experiences. I look forward ... read more

Obfuscator writes: After sleeping on a pinecone for most of the night, we woke up and took a walk down to Lake Pactola to see the dawn. The lake level was extraordinarily low, and so on our way to where the lake actually is, we got to walk on a lot of ground where the lake actually was. This was evidenced by the concrete bucket anchors we found littering the ground we were walking on. There were also some tall and mysterious plants (mainly mysterious because we're willfully ignorant of plants) and cool shale formations all over the place. It was a pretty morning. We got to Mt. Rushmore at a reasonable time, and were able to hike the presidential path before pretty much anyone got there. The path has stops and scenic overlooks for each ... read more

Obfuscator writes: We awoke after a fairly restless night at Ayres Natural Bridges, and took the opportunity to once again survey the park. We were hoping to find some better pictures given better lighting conditions, but we found that the morning's lighting was about as unfavorable as the evening's had been, just on the other side. Still, we met a nice old couple from Iowa who were visiting, and we got to walk around the Old Power Station which had a staggering number of broken windows. We drove quite a bit after that, detouring to see what was marked on our map as Teapot Dome. As some of you may recall from your history courses, or whatever, Teapot Dome was the site of a big scandal early in the 20th Century. We must have passed Teapot ... read more

Hello! We had our 1st real leisurely morning as Mass at Rose of Lima is only at 10 am. It was a pretty all wood church and had a very nice liturgy. We drove the short distance to Mt. Rushmore Natl Monument. It is quite spectacular with facial features and considerable detail. No dogs allowed so Timmy stayed in the motorhome and slept as he has been prone do doing. He loves traveling, but the last few days hasn't been able to digest his food. Picnicked roadside and went back into Hill City (a town much like Truckee). Our new mirror fell off,but didn't break. We stopped at the hardware store for some super, super glue. Keep your fingers crossed. We think of what's going on back home: Jeff's last performance as One Eyed Dick then ... read more

April 18-25th: Leaving Iowa City our destination for the night is in South Dakota. while traveling across Iowa we were surprised to find the birthplace of Presidents Ronald Reagan and Herbert Hoover, also actor John Wayne. Most of the scenery along I-80 is rolling hills and farm land. Des Moines seemed like a nice city, the area we saw had new buildings, there must be a historical section. At Council Bluffs we turned North on I-29 to I-90. There are several camping areas along I-80, it all depends on how far you want to travel daily. Spent the night in Breseford, SD, the campground was small and we were the only campers there. Left Breseford, SD to Rapid City. We plan on spending several days here while touring at Mt. Rushmore NM and Badlands NP. At ... read more

Well it's been a long time coming, but at last I'm on the road! I left Wisconsin a couple of days ago, and for those of you I haven't been in close contact with, here's a brief recap. I spent the summer at my mom's place; what was planned to be a bit of fixing up turned into a total disposal of mom's home. She was diagnosed with colon cancer, and has subsequently undergone treatment. Coupled with all of her other health issues, she needed to be placed in a nursing home, and my brother(at 42) into his very first apartment. It was a bit of a process, but everyone is now settled in. I am taking a very easy trip across the prairies, stopping to see all the things I used to fly by on ... read more

Again we got up at 6AM to get ready and pack up our stuff. I took a few photos of the campsite before we hopped into the van and we were on our way. We stopped off at a petrol station where I finally found a half decent fitting pair of sunglasses and bought them. We drove for a couple of hours before stopping off at the Mount Rushmore National Memorial sign where we all took photos then headed for the famous Mount Rushmore. When we arrived Jon told us we have 45 minutes to have a look around before we had to set off again. We headed towards the amazing Mount Rushmore which was an extremely impressive sight. Another sight we had all seen on the television, it was hard to believe we were actually ... read more

Posted By: Onaxthiel: I beat Obfuscator out of the bivy by about 45 minutes. It gave me some time to play with his camera and get a few shots of the Missouri river sunrise at fort Abraham Lincoln. I also was able to help a young woman from Virginian help pack up her gear. She is road tripping as well, but on a far more condensed time line than we are. College in Washington, or some such. We then had our opportunity to explore F.A.L. and a site called On-A-Slant-Village, a site inhabited by the Mandan Indians a few years prior to the Lewis and Clark expedition. They abandoned it due to a smallpox outbreak, and left a prime piece of real estate for the army to occupy. River on one side, a deep (and deepened ... read more
