Day 10: 59 degrees and cloudy. We moved between Custer State Park and the Black Hills National Forest to do some wildlife viewing. We started with some prairie dogs, I spotted what I claim is a Golden Eagle but it could have been one of many raptors in the area, some red wing black birds, and a few other species of birds I am not familiar with. We caught some white tailed deer and prong horn deer, and of course...a herd of 200-300 bison. On the way home after dinner we spotted some moose but it was too dark to get decent pictures. However, the only viable proof I can present is the picture of two sets of eyes in the dark--see below. We did run up to Rapid City to catch a movie, Inside Out, ... read more

Saturday July 4th Here we are on another adventure and this time we are heading to the Canadian Rockies! We left Friday morning and got on the road by ten am. We made it to coreyville Iowa and had a nice dinner at a place called thirty hops. Geez, what luck, a pub less than two minutes from our hotel! Had a nice dinner and had another stroke of luck and found a brewery five minutes away. So, we had a beer and headed back to the hotel for some rest. Day two found us heading to Spearfish SD. Long day of driving but we are listening to the Unbroken book (on tape) and keeping us captivated enough to not notice the duldrums of the drive. What a story! Anyway, we took a detour to see ... read more

Day 8: Independence Day! Latitude 43.71, Longitude-103.40, 81 degrees and sunny, barely a cloud in the sky. What a Fourth! We visited the Crazy Horse Memorial to start the day. This is an amazing monument. All of the presidents of Mt. Rushmore can fit inside the head of Crazy Horse. We plan on returning for the Laser show tomorrow night and possibly witness some blasting of the sculpture on Monday if the weather holds. As we were leaving the parking lot Alec spotted an Alaska license plate two cars away from us; one to go. After spending some time acquainting ourselves with Native American history we made our way over to Mt. Rushmore. Pulling into our space in the garage, Eagle Eye Alec spotted the rare Hawaii license plate in the next row. 50 States, DC, ... read more

It is our longest leg of the journey. Although we only covered two states we logged over 600 miles and our mileage as we pulled into Custer State Park is 2117 miles. We crossed the Missouri River. We did hit a wrinkle that made us a little nervous as we were trying to get on 90W after driving 100 miles from our last stop. Google insisted on telling to use an on ramp that no longer existed. After spending ten minutes figuring out the poorly marked detour we were able to hop on 90 west for the last 500 miles of this leg. Rest of the rest stops were uneventful, including the much touted Wall Drug, in Wall, SD. Good thing we needed gas and restrooms. However, most people seemed to love it there. We arrived ... read more

Day 8: Oreville to Casper, WY: A mostly uneventful day with an early afternoon stop at a Walmart and checking into a commercial CG. The campground had a good laundry facility that we used. They also had a nice pool that Jenna, Kerry & Bob took advantage of. Gena called a couple hours before we arrived and reserved two spaces - - its a good thing because Casper was hosting the Collegiate Rodeo Finals that week and all the campgrounds filled up.... read more

Day 7 Oreville NFCG, SD: Stayed set up at Oreville NFCG for another day. Headed through Custer SP, SD Wildlife loop. Stopped at the VC for S&P and then took a short loop off the main road where got to see bison up close and personal! They walked right by our windows and across the road only a few feet from the front of the truck. They had a bunch of calves. It was a pretty good “Critter” day with sightings of Big Horn Sheep (right next to the road), prairie dogs, rabbits, and PH antelope. Jenna earned another Junior Ranger badge. Then another long drive back to Oreville NFCG.... read more

What an exciting night! I still can't believe we were at the World Cup but alas, it was time to head back to the US. We didn't have any stops planned since we weren't sure how long it would take to get through border patrol. As we approached, the line was much shorter than when we drove in on Sunday and we were lucky enough to only have to wait about a half hour to get through. So onto our unknown destination. We decided to play today by ear because we weren't sure if we wanted to go back the way we came or try another route. When it came to the split, we ended up continuing on south toward South Dakota rather than back into Minnesota. And again, we saw plenty of land on our ... read more
