Well we started the drive off good we took US-191 to I-90, stopped at two Goodwill stores to find new books for Daisy since she already finished the 4 books in the Twilight Series. Then we went to stop for lunch at McDonald's and I heard a hissing noise from the trailer, Nate looked the trailer over and found we had the start of a flat tire. Luckily Nate was prepared and ordered 5 tires before summer so that gave us a new tire to put on. Nate kept his cool and replaced the tire, we ate lunch and continued on our drive. Oh and we bought a tire pressure monitoring system for the trailer as an added safety measure that went off shortly after we discovered the leak and we would defiantly recommend having one ... read more

DAY 14 - Sunday, July 10, 2016 Wayne, Nebraska to Oacoma, SD - Missouri River to Wall, SD to Keystone, SD - Mt. Rushmore National Monument to Willow Creek Black Hills National Forest Campground Who knew Wayne, Nebraska would be such a rockin’ town all night long? They are serious about their Chicken Show weekend! Geoff drove us back toward the east entrance of town and we slept away from all the celebration noise. In the morning we said goodbye to our Glass family relatives - Thanks again for the showers! :) It was a real treat to meet more relatives - thank you, Lord! We grocery shopped at the local Pac ’N Save and hit our first of several highways to weave our way northwest back to Interstate-90. Very pretty countrysides but it was a ... read more

DAY 15 - Monday, July 11, 2016 Black Hills National Forest to Mt. Rushmore to Keystone, SD to Rapid City, SD to Spearfish, SD Thank you, Lord God, for a good night’s sleep! It’s easy to forget what solid sleep feels like on a 20 day motorhome trip. If you’ve been reading our blog for this whole trip than you know “we had a nice breakfast.” :) And back to Mt. Rushmore. We watched the movie, listened to a ranger speak about the sculptor’s vision and work, and thoroughly enjoyed one of our greatest American landmarks. Pearl did her junior ranger work and can now tell you all about Mt. Rushmore - just ask her! We ate Thomas Jefferson’s hand-scooped vanilla ice-cream bought more t-shirts and finished our time at Mt. Rushmore. We still had a ... read more

Spent the afternoon getting acquainted with Mount Rushmore. A very awesome monument, impressive achievement and vison to honor four great president's. Stayed till the evening lighting ceremony. The next morning went back did a hike under the face , got different angles of the carving. We then went to the Chef Crazy Horse monument. An other awesome example of engineering. Lunch in Custer at a very nice sandwich and ice cream shop . Lots of business in Custer. On to Custer State park to be stuck in traffic because a bunch of bison wanted to just hang out on and near the road. Ill let some of the pictures speak.... read more

When I first set out to plan our road trip, I knew we needed to nail down our plans for Fourth of July weekend. Everything else could probably wait to be booked, but not our stays for the long weekend! And, so, it was early February when I booked a tent site for the Cedar Pass Campground at Badlands National Park. I was able to snag one of the only sites with a tree, which was important to me because I need shade! Unfortunately, that decision was actually a mistake, as I'll explain shortly. We pulled into the Badlands in the early evening, after a long day of visiting national monuments. We really just wanted to set up our tent, cook some dinner, and head to bed. Unfortunately, because of the burn restrictions, we weren't able ... read more

We left Devil's Tower and drove through the Black Hills of South Dakota while it was still early. We wanted to do the easy family hike at the Jewel Cave, but, when we arrived, we found out that all the tour times were booked up. It's first-come, first-serve, but Fourth of July weekend is evidently a busy time around Mount Rushmore! So, we'll have to save the Jewel Cave for another time. We set out for Mount Rushmore, driving through the Black Hills. At some point in the drive--I can't remember where--we missed a turn off and ended up driving on a small road with no services. A road trip wouldn't be complete without a bathroom break on the side of the road, and so when we had to use the bathroom, we had to pull ... read more

Here is the report from days two and three on the way west! We left Cedar Falls, Iowa on Tuesday and headed north towards Minnesota. First stop was “The Little Brown Church” that inspired the old hymn “Come to the Church in the Wildwood” (you will love this rendition: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOm0bhnfmDw). Back on the road as we approached the town of Clear Lake, Iowa, George caught sight of a sign for a public garden, something we try not to pass up, so we added a new, unplanned stop—the beauty of somewhat unplanned travel. Should have known it was going to be a great detour when the first thing we spotted after getting on the exit ramp was a fox trotting along side the road. The garden was a real treat, one of those things that civic-minded communities ... read more

Day 3 - June 29, 2016 Spearfish, SD to Wall, SD to the Badlands National Park to Chamberlain, SD to Mitchell, SD to Sioux Falls, SD Another early start this morning gave us time to drive the Scenic Byway through the Badlands National Park. (Only $15!) Real live prairie dogs greeted us at the entrance. Remember my last blog and I said, "God's the Best Artist!" Well His beauty shines through South Dakota! The Painted Hills are majestic and had me singing "America the Beautiful" and "My Country 'Tis of Thee" and "How Great Thou Art". I have failed my children though - they don't know many of our great country's songs from old. No better time to learn them! Luckies!! They owe me anyway - they put the cabash on my Classic Books on "tape". ... read more

Day four got off to a great start in Hot (Warm) Springs with breakfast at a place called “Daily Bread.” It is the sort of café every town deserves—good coffee and food, plenty of donuts and cookies, and a wide assortment of breads. Behind Marcia at one table were about 10 of the town’s women discussing the affairs of the church, to my right was a table of gentlemen discussing whether or not someone was ‘born again’ and why another fellow’s wife left him. The seeming organizer of the guy table had driven up in a beautifully restored 1957 Chevy Bel Air which he saw me admiring as we left and I shot him a thumbs up to his smile. We made our way to Wind Cave National Park and decided to take a tour deep ... read more
