Independence Mall, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania http://www.nps.gov/inde/ We arrived in Philadelphia and immediately went to Independence Mall. There, we saw Independence Hall, Olde City Hall, the first place Congress met. Also, there were original copies of the Declaration of Independence, The Articles of Confederation, and The Constitution. Then we stood in line for the Liberty Bell. There was this Falun Gong protest in front of the Liberty Bell building. They had some pretty gruesome pictures laid out showing what the Chinese government does to them. We asked Justin what is was all about, since he’s a doctor and all, but apparently all he knows is Fairies, Unicorns, and Sandwiches. And now Dr. J. D. Littell’s knowledge of Unicorns: 1. Smart like a house cat 2. Can sense when hu... read more

18th Sept ’12 York to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Today it was raining!! We were driving through the Amish farm lands of Pennsylvania and had intended to do Aaron and Jessica’s buggy ride but by the time we reached the farm it was tanking down and a buggy ride didn’t sound as much fun! We did spot a few buggies around and about and lots of Witness style barns but it just wasn’t the same in the rain. So we carried on along a very complex route to get to Philadelphia Airport. At one point it was raining so hard you couldn’t see the road at all which was a bit hairy! However it eased off to a mild torrent and we made it to the motel ok. 19th September ’12 Philadelphia After we checked out of the ... read more

On Monday morning I woke and was on my way pretty early because a park ranger at Valley Forge had recommended I go on the tour of Independence Hall in Philadelphia first thing in the morning, to avoid the crowds. I was delayed a little because my room safe had been left locked, but with the door open. The problem was easily fixed by the hotel staff. I headed into Philadelphia, surprised a little to see that there were cops parked on quite a few corners. At first I thought they were just doing it near the Benjamin Franklin Bridge for anti-terrorism, but I saw them inside the historic area of Philadelphia as well. Anyway, my first task was to find somewhere to eat breakfast. I found a food hall / mall called The Bourse and ... read more

Geo: 39.9522, -75.1624We arrived in Philly to balmy, sunnyweather, fairly relaxed and rested. Entering the older Concourse B,we found it fairly congested, and crammed with food venders. We hiked over to the International Terminal A (new and spacious) andfound the departure gate for the next leg of our trip. Then we had just enough time to hit the Vino Volo wine bar for a quick glass of Spanish Tempranillo (Janet had a New Zealand Savignon Blanc) and a chicken salad before our flight to Brussels. We boarded our 767 and settled in for the 7 hour flight across the Atlantic and some sleep.... read more

I am currently outside Philadelphia airport.... Why am I here? I turned up at the airport at 8am for my 9.30am connection flight to Newark for New Orleans. Then the flight was delayed first by 30 minutes, then by 45 minutes.... So I approached the front desk to ensure I would be able to catch my connecting flight. They assured me I would be flying within the hour.... Then the flight was delayed by an hour..... Then suddenly the flight was delayed by three hours, which then led to a queue as long as the passengers on the plane. As everybody has different connective flights. Then all the machines went down with the printers, it was then I knew this was not going to be my day... I was not surprised then when the words canceled ... read more

After a very good night’s sleep and some wakening up, we (Terri, George and I ) went out for breakfast. Naturally I didn’t eat anything. The day was perfect for moving about in Philly and we started off by taking the bus to the centre, from there on we went towards the museum where the actual Liberty Bell was on display. It was interesting to see it, but even more so to see the building that used to house that bell, because it was used in the film National Treasure.. After the cracked gong we walked around for a while and got to see a whole lot of stuff, and I really appreciate it. The only disappointing thing was the market we visited... I bought candy... I ate candy... I almost got sick in the car ... read more

I officially attempted to assimilate into American culture today... I went to a baseball game. The Philadelphia phillies at the citizen bank park taking on the Chicago cubs. What a Phillie is I can't tell you, it is rather unimaginative but it is one of the oldest franchises in baseball and most importantly hasn't moved around with the frequency of most other American teams. It's history I appreciated, and it instantly made me like them that little bit more. The stadium seats over 40,000 fans, and it was quite a surreal experience. My 30 dollar ticket got me a seat in the nose bleed section, with no protection against the cold winds of an April evening. The first 5 innings passed with little aplomb mostly strikeouts and quick innings despite this it did pique my interest. ... read more

I am nearing the end of my stay with Kayla and Brown bear. And in commiseration or perhaps celebration, we went back into Philadelphia. To visit one of my favourite places. But first we travelled to south street. This street can only be described as eclectic, and wonderfully bohemian. It's a great street to just people watch, from antique shops selling cupboards of taxidermy to Rastafarian inspired tobacco shops. I couldn't help but think of both Gabi and Ruth, knowing they would love this street. There were also comic book and record stores, so my inner geek squealed in delight. Shockingly though there were a rather inordinate number of sex shops including Condom Kingdom..... I was surprised by the blatancy of it all, vibrators in shop windows, as well as other overt sexual items. The shop ... read more

Today we ventured to Camden Aquarium, surrounded by small children and for some reason the entire Jewish population of new jersey. My attention span lasted all of about 45 minutes there are only so many fish you can be awestruck over before you come to the conclusion they are still just fish. Though the penguins were pretty cute if not also completely stupid I was overwhelmed by the urge to push one of them over and watch them attempt to self right. Kayla told me that the penguins wouldn't have appreciated that even if she would also find it hilarious. I stroked a string ray who seemed to be enjoying human contact a little too much. After much persuading Kayla, my American mother, agreed to let me wander around Camden unaccompanied so I could see what ... read more

After breakfast replied to mails and updated travel blog...my routine every morning. It has been raining non stop since Saturday night. Left at 11:30am and drove for more than an hour to Sabrina's Cafe. Lot of people were waiting in that small crowded restaurant and we also had to wait in spite of making reservations. They call out names from the reservation list as soon as there is a table to accomodate us. After brunch drove around downtown. Did a small city tour by car in the rain. Camcost where there was supposed to be a huge screen of 2000sq.ft. showing the history of Philadelphia was closed. Saw City Hall, which is the center of government, Logan's Square with the lovely fountain in the center, the dockyard with many ships..some of them warships. Also saw the ... read more
