Good morning Portland. So the day was overcast but we still had a full schedule and most of it was driving, so it wasn't too much of a problem. It is a neat little town. We did not get to see much of it on the drive in the previous night. There are some cruise ships docked across the street from the hotel. Those are some big boats. Don't forget to get more of the visit to Portland at this blog. (Link to follow). Maine Beer Company, Portland, Maine http://www.mainebeercompany.com/ Unfortunately, we were unable to get an official tour here. We arrived at 10 A.M. but the tour was at 2 P.M. But a tour wasn’t really needed here. The gift shop had a window that looked right out on to the production floor, so we ... read more

So Boston is done, so now on to the next state. We again had kind of a loose schedule. Here is a little story of how we got to taste Budweiser on a craft brew tour. Anheuser-Busch, Merrimack, New Hampshire http://anheuser-busch.com/ We were originally not going to tour this place. We had decided that this vacation was about craft brews only. However, we had an opening in the schedule, and we decided that we should see what the big guy does. A bonus of stopping here was that we were able to see one of the three Clydesdale teams in the Unites States. 1. Shock Top Pumpkin Wheat Hazy amber color. Light body. Pumpkin aroma but not flavor. 2. Budweiser, Lager Probably the best Bud I have ever had 3. Shock Top Midnight Wheat ... read more

Good morning Boston! We decided it would be much easier to take the T to get to our first tour at Sam Adams. Well, that meant an earlier morning than most because of the walk to the station then switching trains. Go to my friends blog to see some pictures of the T. Samuel Adams, Boston Beer Company, Boston, Massachusetts http://www.samueladams.com/ This was one of the tours I was excited to take. And what better time to start than first thing at 10 A.M. We waited for the tour in a room with pictures and factoids about the brewery and brewer, Jim Koch. While the tour is free, they did ask for at least $2 which goes towards a Boston area charity. Surprisingly, the place was pretty small. It turns out that most of their production ... read more

We had a loose schedule but, after a few calls and recommendation, we were able to fit 6 breweries in on one day. That’s going to be hard to beat. For another persepective see Justin and Tracy's blog . Thomas Hooker Brewing Company, Bloomfield, Connecticut http://hookerbeer.com/ We had a sort of impromptu tour here. The head brewer, Mike, showed us around. He was very informative and delved into the chemistry and biology of what was going on in the brewing process. It was a production day and we got to see the bottling machine in action. A very cool but noisy addition to the tour. 1. Imperial Porter Nice coffee aroma and flavor. Good hop balance. 2. Watermelon Ale Strong watermelon aroma, like a Jolly Rancher. Subtler wate... read more

Today started off sunny but quickly turned to showers. It made for an interest looking drive through New Jersey. This was also a day of surprise tours and suprises on tours. Tracy and Justin's blog has more details on the travels. River Horse Brewery, Lambertville, New Jersey http://www.riverhorse.com/ This place was closed for production today. Still we called to see if we could get it for a private tour or tasting. Sadly, we were stymied. We still drove up and got a picture. Then we decided to get some sandwich making ingredients. At the stop in Stockton, New Jersey, Justin found Phillip’s Fine Wines, and was able to pick up two four packs from River Horse. 1. Belgian Wheat 2. Independence Mall, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania http://www.nps.gov/inde/ We arrived in Philadelphia and immediately went to Independence Mall. There, we saw Independence Hall, Olde City Hall, the first place Congress met. Also, there were original copies of the Declaration of Independence, The Articles of Confederation, and The Constitution. Then we stood in line for the Liberty Bell. There was this Falun Gong protest in front of the Liberty Bell building. They had some pretty gruesome pictures laid out showing what the Chinese government does to them. We asked Justin what is was all about, since he’s a doctor and all, but apparently all he knows is Fairies, Unicorns, and Sandwiches. And now Dr. J. D. Littell’s knowledge of Unicorns: 1. Smart like a house cat 2. Can sense when hu... read more

Leaving Poquoson We started early with pancakes and coffee. Once Tracy showed up, we packed up and headed on the road. The first leg of our journey lasted to 7 –eleven for coffee. Then there was a discussion about chicken buses. See the blog post here for an account. On a related note, I was flipping through my homebrew bible, The New Complete Joy of Hombrewing, by Charlie Papazian, and found a receipe for Cock Ale. Not kidding. If you can find it, please, please read it. The descripiton on the treatment of the rooster is quite amusing considering the wording. 16 Mile, Georgetown, Delaware http://16milebrewery.com/ The brewery is a fairly nondescript building, and I would not have known it was a brewery except for t... read more

First off, welcome and thanks for reading my blog. This trip is and east coast brewery tour. We are starting in Poquoson VA and heading north touring as many breweries as we can. Some of the major cities we will be hitting are Philadelphia, Boston, Portland, and Burlington. Again, thanks for join us on this adventure. Jerry and I arrived at the long term parking garage and found this bird out side the elevator. At the time, I thought it was just something interesting to take a picture of. Looking back, I guess it could be taken as a bad omen for the flight. But I think that stuff is bunk! I hope this is the lowest point of the trip. Moving, on… The flight to Atlanta was uneventful, which was nice. It was in the ... read more
