The heat continues here in Philadelphia, but that’s not going to stop us from going to our Build Day here in my home city of Brotherly Love! I pull out my American Flag inspired hat & fanny pack and we pile into the van to head to West Philly. Right before we arrive, Ryan (who was driving the van) hit a car mirror (or something), which lead to a man following the van down the street. He eventually stopped, we piled out of the van prepared to walk, only to get back in the van, the issue resolved, and us continue on our way to the build. We arrive and meet Magpie and her boyfriend Matt, who’s in town visiting for a few days. I introduce myself and try to make friends, but he’s a bit ... read more

Today’s the day!! The rides I was most looking forward to on this trip were my rides home—to West Palm & to Philly —and Philly is phinally here!! ??We are awakened by some Philly inspired music dj-ed by Nora Jane and I’m filled with excitement and disbelief that this day is here! Have you ever woken up in the morning and just knew it would be a great day and one you would never forget? That’s how I felt today as I rolled up my sleeping bag and got ready for the day. I then asked NJ if I could help DJ the philly inspired music, which she kindly gave me the responsibility for. I cued up Rocky, P!nk, Boys 2 Men and the Fresh Prince to get us fired up for our ride into the ... read more

Philadelphia has so much history and nuisances with the city. I had been down to visit my friend Alison from time to time, but had only explored the city once. I was very excited to see the city to visit my friend Alison, as well as do some exploration. I left work on a Friday night and it was a miserable trip down. There was so much traffic and at one point my GPS took me through the city. This was a huge mistake as there was standstill traffic at times. It took about 1 hour and 30 minutes to get through one area of the city. This was due to the accident at the Lincoln Tunnel. Once I got onto 95 South I was able to move at a more consistent pace. I stopped at ... read more

NOTE - I will be using some ice hockey words in this entry. So if you are not familiar with the game of ice hockey at all, you may want to skip this entry. I have been meaning to go to a Flyers hockey game for some time. It has been some time since I went to one, as tickets tend to be very pricey. Well, I decided to go to this one, as this was the cheapest option that I found on StubHub. I have not been to many Flyers games. My first game ever, was in 1990, at the Spectrum against the Detroit Red Wings. I remember it was a season finale game, as they were not going to the playoffs that season. After that, it would be 3 games at their current home, ... read more

I wasn't up that early in the morning, however whilst the others were showering and getting ready (I had already showered myself, just in case you're thinking I'm a slob) I walked around to get some final some photos. Philadelphia apparently means "city of brotherly love" and one of the sculptures to see is the "love" sculpture. After searching where it should have been I was advised that it has been taken away temporarily whilst the square it was in is being landscaped. There is a French "Amor" one near by if, by some chance, that is supposed to be any kind of substitute. Once we were sorted, we set about driving to New York. Our satnav badly let us down on the way to Philadelphia so this time we decided to ignore it and blindly ... read more

I made it an early start again to get some photos of the skyline following the missed opportunity the night before. I found a point over the river near the Art Museum, with a glorious view once the sun came up. By chance, I looked in the other direction and there was a fantastic view of some boat houses that were all outlined in lights - I'm not sure what the set-up is with those, but they looked stunning against the night sky. The stunning view was contrasted with the shock of all the homeless people on the streets whist I was walking there and back. Literally every bench had someone sleeping on it. Philadelphia used to be the capital of the US for about ten years between independence and the move to Washington D.C. It ... read more

We traveled to Philadelphia on the Acela Express - a service that runs from Grand Union Station in Washington to Boston. Grand Union is the station that was the model for Grand Central in NY and is a magnificent building, not only a busy station but also full of shops and restaurants - worth a visit in its own right. Bill had booked us 1st class tickets so we were ushered into a private lounge with complimentary hot and cold drinks before boarding. Once on board we were offered a choice from both breakfast and lunch menus ( it was 10 AM) and more drinks - all part of the service. The breakfast menu offered anything from a fruit bowl to steak and eggs! I opted for the former and Bill had a surprisingly good sun ... read more

Geo: 39.9522, -75.1624I have had these great plans to travel the US but it can be so tricky trying to fit flights and bus trips in when you're working with kids. Lucie and I decided to go on a day trip to Philadelphia as it is only a 2.5 hour bus trip. We tried to see and do as much as we could in the five hours we were there. Google Maps is often a huge pain in the butt when you don't know if you're standing in the North, East, South or West direction (I was never good at Geography, so don't laugh at my lack of direction), so we ended up Ubering everywhere as it was starting to snow too. Philly is like a mini New York, thankfully not as busy and as smelly ... read more
