The next few weeks was spent cycling every day with Matt, something usually going wrong with his bike that slowed him right down. He had lost his bank card he told me so his funds were becoming limited, this changed my perspective of traveling with him. I've been around too many broke people in my life to feel 'ok' with this. Matt was cool and everything and I still believed his stories though some of them began sounding very exaggerated, I even caught him out at one point re telling an important story about him getting hit by a drunken driver in Alabama that was completely different the second time through. We started going to all these Indian casinos that gave you free playing money if you sign up, at one I won $170 which was ... read more

Once we got going I was expecting to have a major difference in pace with Matt due to his cycling experience. His bike had mountain bike tires on it though and he really wasn't that fast of a rider anyway so I was constantly slowing down letting him do the leading. I'm not a physics expert by any means but after watching Matt struggle for a few km's on his bike with its huge, fat tires I could see it was a gigantic disadvantage on the road. It was really fucking logical to see how much harder he had to work to get speed up, I pointed this out which he completely denied, he told me the huge diameter of his wheels meant greater speed, I let it go. It was good to be cycling with ... read more

I was relieved and felt lucky to have found them, Matt helped me drag my made up tent to the site and helped me unhook a bungee strap that had gotten badly tangled in my front tire. When I had the strap unhooked and my site finally set up I realized how vulnerable I was being so new to this type of travel and how good it was to get some real help. I started connecting with Matt pretty well and he had no problem rolling cigarettes for me to smoke every so often, we chatted for quite a while which I noticed quickly involved him chatting, a lot, and telling a lot of stories that were interesting enough for me not to get upset about having to listen to for a lengthy bits of time. ... read more

I put on my waterproof pants for the first time and packed away my soggy gear, my entire tent was sopping including the inside after this. That day was one of the toughest looking back as I still wasn't in bicycling shape, the previous day I had done about 70 miles so my legs were sore to and as I rode my waterproof gear made me sweat. It rained so heavily for hours that the road had little streams running down and I remember pushing my bike up a huge hill that went on forever and seeing Kane cycling up and disappearing around a corner. My morale was very low as the rain managed to get inside my head despite my body being mostly dry, I was suffering and almost scared being out in such heavy ... read more

I cycled pretty solidly until 16:30 and had my destination penned as a town called Invercargil, a 60 mile or so ride from Portland. I passed a van waiting to turn onto the road that reminded me of the one I'd had in New Zealand the year before for 4 months, I waved at the occupants. I rode a bit further and saw the van had driven up ahead of me and pulled over, when I got closer they waved me down. There was a man and his son who asked where I was camping that night, I really didn't know and it was getting close to sunset with ten miles to go so they offered to put me up in their home close by. I got nothing but good vibes so I agreed. They drove ... read more

The next day I checked out of the hostel and met up with an older gent who I got linked up with through couchsurfing.com when I was trying to find hosts. His name was Pete and he had cycled the west coast route to Costa Rica in recent years. He showed me a good route along the coast through Mexico, bought me pizza, looked over my bike for free at the bicycle shop he owned and afterwards we went our separate ways. I felt more confident after meeting him as my exposure to bicycle culture was still quite limited. I cycled directionless around the city for a little bit as the person I would be getting hosted by, Lauren, would not be home until after 5, she was also 15 miles south of downtown Portland, no ... read more

Geo: 46.1881, -123.83This morning we both slept-in a bit. It was great. I laid in bed awake but watching the ocean roll by for a long time. I finally got-up around 8:00am but Kamie refused so I left him sleeping while I went to check-out more of the ship. I decided to walk the outer deck 3 which goes all the way round the ship – 3 laps is a mile I think. There were several others walking and it was windy and cool and fantastic. It was a great way to start the day. The shops opened at 9am and I decided to see if there were any sales. I still haven't decided whether I'm going to get that "I wish I was on a dam ship" mug or not. It would be a pain ... read more

We drove the Oregon Coast yesterday into Bandon, OR. We were hesitant about the hotel I booked as we have grown comfortable with and love the predictable Holiday Inn & Expresses. The room on-line looked a little tired, but they told me that the view was spectacular and they were spot on! We were weary from the drive and asked the Sutnset Motel folks where to eat and they suggested their on-site restaurant, which again, we didn't trust, but it ended up being the best dinner so far! The drive today has been beautiful on Hwy 101 through the Redwoods and now we are sailing into Napa. Wish we were arriving earlier than 8 p.m., but we couldn't stand to leave Bandon before we had to!... read more
