Geo: 45.4564, -123.843Today we were off to visit a massive flying boat- after our recent stops you might be thinking that a flying boat would be a Homer Simpson idea, or a napkin sketch from the Salem Insane Asylum, but it was a U.S. government sanctioned project that was led by the notorious Howard Hughes. The ship convoy losses resulting from German U-Boat attacks motivated a number of off-the-wall ideas but this might have been the biggest one. The original idea for the flying boat actually came from Henry Kaiser (head of one of the largest shipbuilding firms of the time)- Kaiser thought a ship that could fly over the danger might be the answer.Howard Hughes was known as an innovator in aircraft construction and design. These two men would launch the venture to build the ... read more

Geo: 44.0472, -123.02When we first started planning this roadtrip, DH had expressed serious interest in only three of the many, many odd ball attractions spread all over the U.S. and Canada: the Lucille Ball Museum in New York, the worlds largest perogy in Saskatchewan, and Springfield Oregon, world famous home of the cartoon Simpsons. Our first crack at her relatively short list wish list (mine sits at 1,857 and growing) was Springfield Oregon. Two TV shows make DH giggle like a teenage girl- Modern Family and The Simpsons, so the idea of going to the home of Homers "Doh!" was high on the list for her. She was hooked after an episode in which Homer, as a coach, started cutting everybody included the voice-over guy who was trying to shush him as the credits rolled- she ... read more

Geo: 43.9828, -124.099As we left California, we were worried that we might be leaving the eccentricities we had really enjoyed so far. Both Oregon and Washington have a more serious, straight-laced reputation.Oregon does host some of the most spectacular scenery along the Pacific Ocean Highway but when we (and when I say 'we', I mean me) heard that Oregon was the one state that was bombed from the air during WWII we knew there had to be a few more twists and turns to be found. Our first stop was the Chetco Community Public Library which houses the Samurai Sword of the Japanese pilot who bombed Oregon- in the late summer of 1942, Nobuo Fujita dropped four incendiary bombs in the forests of southern Oregon, near the logging town of Brookings (his tiny plane had been ... read more

Geo: 45.5118, -122.676West of Downtown Portland is the Washington Park within which lies Portland Japanese Garden. It is reputed to be the most authentic Japanese garden outside of Japan. It occupied 5.5 acres and took four years to build. It was superb. Every turn presented a different view, each one equally breath-taking. When we got there, it was pouring but it was in fact a blessing in disguise, as all the trees with rain drops on the branches were glistening when the sun eventually emerged from behind the black clouds. There were lots of places to sit down in a tranquil setting, fellow visitors' noises notwithstanding, and contemplate nature, life, the meaning of the universe etc. Alas, all the benches were wet from the rain so we didn't find out what it was like to meditate ... read more

Geo: 45.5118, -122.676We were promised good weather so took advantage of it to explore the majestic Columbia Gorge. It runs for 80 miles and is up to 4000 feet in places, gouged out by a succession of cataclysmic floods at the end of the last Ice Age. Think Cheddar Gorge on steroids! The Columbia River forms the state boundary between Oregon to the south and Washington to the north. Why the Columbia River is not in the District of Columbia and why Columbia University is in New York are matters for Wikipedia. We drove along the Historic Highway past a succession of dramatic waterfalls and spectacular viewpoints. The huge cliffs are made of dark, volcanic basalt, which make for marvellous scenery but must have presented tremendous challenges to the first settlers and to the early roadbuilders. At Bonneville, ... read more

Geo: 45.5118, -122.676Portlanders value their outdoor space. So it came as no surprise that a forward-thinking governor, Tom McCall, reclaimed land formerly used as a highway and created a park by the Willamette River. It is a nice green space to stroll along when the weather is good (it was raining this morning...). Alas, the view across the river isn't the most picturesque; the highways bypassing Portland are all on the other side of the river. The park also contains a poignant memorial to the 100,000+ Japanese Americans interned during WW2.Portland is twinned with the Chinese city of Suzhou. As part of a cultural exchange programme, each one created a garden in the twinned city. Portland gave Suzhou a rose garden. In return, the Chinese created a classical Chinese garden for Portland. It is very pretty ... read more

Geo: 45.5118, -122.676Jet lag had us up early if not bright and after a healthy breakfast of pound cake we went to pick up our hire car. We thought it would be good to have a satnav in the hired vehicle and upgraded to a Dodge Charger. Alan got very excited as he finally got to drive an American muscle car. We drive a Skoda Octavia in the UK, a Dodge Charger is a very different kettle of fish. Our first port of call was the Lemay America's Car Museum, in Tacoma. It's one of the largest private collections in the world and the largest automobile museum in America. What a fantastic collection of iconic American cars! Took lots of photos but will only show a small selection on here. Apart from cars, there was ... read more

Amy: We have finally made it to Oregon City. Dad said that while we were here we were going to visit his sister and stay here for a couple days. I can’t wait to meet her and her children, dad says that she has a girl around my age that I could talk too. Normally I wouldn’t be interested in talking to her, but after sitting in a wagon for days with only your family you sort of feel like being surrounded by people. Jason, Jennifer and me made plans to hang out more often when we get back home. Jason want’s me to teach him how to draw and Jennifer really wanted to read some of the stuff that I wrote. I really enjoyed this trip, I will even have some stories to tell my ... read more

Amy: We are officially in Oregon. However, dad says that we won’t stop until we get to Oregon City, which is still a couple days away. In the meantime me and my siblings are making plans for when we get to Oregon City. Throughout the trip I’ve had time to talk to them, really talk to them. Most of the time I’m in my room or with some friends because I used to hate hanging out with my own family. I always felt that Jennifer and Jason sort of separated themselves from me, and I always felt that mom only wanted to argue with me. I realize now that I was wrong, I was the one separating myself from them, I was the one that was looking for an argument. I like the way this trip worked ... read more
