The first town I hit was Lincoln City, and I soured on it quickly. The traffic, likely fed by the nearby casino, was terrible. After being spoiled by several days of quiet, scenic back roads, I just wanted to escape this busy stretch of 101. Lincoln City went on the list of "towns to explore on the trip back" list. Eventually I made it through the city and the lovely coast scenery returned. I made a couple of unplanned stops for pictures, and then arrived in Depoe Bay around lunch time. This town fit my mood much better. The west side of the street was all parking, making it easy to stop for pictures and a meal, which was populated by little restaurants and touristy stores. After the rich meals I had eaten over the last ... read more

6/8/16 The best grilled cheese sandwiches are done on a campfire at Panther Flats campground in Jedidiah Smith State Park under the watchful eyes of the redwoods. Even at 9pm! It is dark out here and fun to walk around and practice using our night vision. A number of years ago we camped at Ledge Park at Horicon in WI and wandered around that way. Can't do that in Alaska! At least not usually. A group of about 50 motorcycles with little trailers came in shortly after we set up camp. How fun to travel as a group! Tomorrow we head up towards Salem and will stay with Katrina and James at their farm. 6/9/16 Saying goodbye to the redwoods today. We will go back again. Maybe you will come with us? Elan dropped us off at 11:45pm to the airport and even though I thought there was no more TSA precheck possibilities upon checking in, both Mark amd I got it! We left a couple of hours later, slept very little on the plane to Seattle and finally arrived bleary eyed in Portland. After picking up our suitcase, had to check it because we must be prepared with knife and Swiss tool! And bedding for the RV plus a small pan set and camping plate set... Mark thinks I can make a gourmet meal now! Oh! And a lightweight down blanket... We head out in the 98*F weather on to public transportation to pick up our RV. Ever stand at a bus stop, not knowing quite where you are and seeing the bus you want to catch ... read more

7th May Coast bound today, the altitude had been a bit of a struggle particularly for Sal, we had been up to was about 8000 ft so Machu Picchu was disappearing off our bucket list and we were both glad to go down. The hotel had trolleys for you to put luggage on and wheel to the car and as we weren't that well packed as everything was going in the car, our assorted suitcases and bags went on here, unfortunately, Col forgot the suitcases were on wheels and everything fell off ha ha! Only slightly embarrassing as Sal couldn't help for laughing ?, luggage porter has been crossed off the list of possible new careers. There is a funny little drive through only coffee place opposite and we called in for a coffee, the guy was ... read more

At every stop we have made there comes time to load up and move on and normally we are ready to go. This is the first time that we wish we had a few more days to continue exploring. Grants Pass, OR sits in the fertile Rouge Valley between the Siskiyou and Cascade mountain ranges and of course the Rouge River, spring fed by waters from Crater Lake, runs right through town. This is nice little city, clean, green and dedicated to outdoor living. Much is made of the Rouge River rafting and salmon fishing that draws tourist from all over the west but we found there are large cattle ranches and farms throughout the valley that support the local and statewide markets. Spring is beautiful here but I would like to come back in the ... read more

It was a short drive to Tillamook. It was early enough in the day that I avoided the crowds heading to the coast from the city. The search for breakfast was harder than expected as the first several restaurants along the main drag were closed for the day or even the week. Apparently the main tourist season hadn't fully begun yet. One of my goals for this trip was to stick to small, local restaurants when eating out. In desperation I pulled up to the IHOP. After a hot breakfast and way too much coffee, I headed to Fred Meyers for supplies and to make some calls. I had a feeling I wouldn't have cell coverage at the campsite, which would turn out to be true for much of the coast. After finding space in my ... read more

After a stressful morning of hauling boxes to storage, packing the car (twice), laundry, and cleaning, I finally hit the road about 3pm. Thanks to the late start, I was in traffic until I passed Hillsboro. Finally, the buildings started to thin out and it began to feel like a real road trip. I arrived at Stub Stewart State Park and went about filling out the registration slip. I had reserved aspot in advance. With that done, I began to organize my gear. The campground I selected is a hike-in campground, which means you park in the main parking lot and then walk the last 1/4 mile to your spot. The person that arrived right after I did seemed surprised by this. Luckily for him, the park supplies carts to make hauling your gear easier. I ... read more

To finish up the story of our flight from Madrid to Dallas to Portland. I should have known better than to book a flight through Dallas in tornado season, We were originally coming back from Madrid to Chicago, then on to PDX. Between November and March American Airlines made the the switch to Dallas. Of course Chicago could have had ever thunderstorms and tornados in the vicinity of Ohara too, but the way the weather had been treating Texas I should have expected the 6 hour rain delay. After 11 hours of being on the Madrid-Dallas flight, which as fairly comfortable on a 777-200, we made a big mistake by not being a Admiral Club membership and instead hung out on the concourse with the real travelers, all who we tight lipped Oregonians just wanting to ... read more
