Today is a travel day and a pretty ambitious one. We wanted to see the Oregon Coast so we drove to Seaside, Oregon first to see the end of the Lewis and Clark Trail. There was a statue of Lewis and Clark in the center of town overlooking the beach. It was a busy little town. It appeared people were there for some kind of race. We went in a few shops but we really didn’t have much time to explore. Next up was Cannon Beach famous for haystack rock. It’s a large rock that sits on the edge of the beach. Most people have seen pictures of it without even realizing it. Haystack rock is also a home for puffins from May to mid August during their breeding season. Cannon Beach was also a cute ... read more

It's that time of year again, and a very momentous one at that. Thursday night has arrived and I should be packing, BUT, I thought I would get a head start on blogging about our impending trip to South Dakota. It was 2011 when I gave birth to this baby blog. Much like my attempts at maintaining photo albums (ask my kids), this endeavor has been hit and mostly miss. This time last year, our journey was uncertain. David, who I will only this once refer to as Dear Hubby Wubby, had just been released from the hospital. Two very long months of hospital stays, a 15 pound weight loss, unanswered questions, and finally a surgery to gut out the problem (pun intended), the evil pancreatitis had been slain. You wanna ride 1,500 long, hot, deserted ... read more

Our stay at the Tokeland Hotel really was great. The atmosphere is kind of a mix between a historic hotel, B&B, and Grandpa's cottage. The whole place is very eclectic with a variety of old wooden tables and chairs in the dining area, with cloth placemats and all the lounge seating areas around the hotel have a real hodge podge mix of chairs and couches with cushions and blankets and piles of books and board games everywhere. All of the staff and the owners are very friendly and attentive and even Fat Cat and Pixie the old Golden Retriever were very welcoming. The meals were all excellent from the oysters and scallops to the eggs, cranberry sausages and coffee. The Tokeland is a VERY warm and homey place and I would strongly recommend that you do ... read more

Two weeks, prior to the event a family friend asked if I would like to walk in the relay race as one member had to step down. I contemplated it for a short while and responded "Yes". I then attended our team meeting where I would find out that I was walking two of the twenty four sections of the relay race. We would be camping overnight along the route and the finish line was in Seaside. I knew this family friend had walked the event in the past and about half of the twelve member team was doing this walk for the 1st time. I saw this event as a great motivator to get me back into working out on a regular basis, do something I enjoyed before Motherhood and it would be fun to ... read more

July 12, 2013 Fun day today! Got up and headed to Seaside, a small, popular town about 20 miles from here. Walked around and enjoyed seeing where Lewis and Clark finished up their trek with a statue right on the beach. Checked out the little shops and then headed for Cannon Beach and Mo’s, a favorite seafood place we love – only in the NW. Salmon for Marge, shrimp for Will. Then we walked on the beach and took pictures of THE HAYSTACK, the big one. Tried to get pictures of the Puffins but they flew too high. They come once a year and land on the haystack, burrow a hole and lay their eggs; right about now, the eggs should be hatching. Wish we could have been closer to see. Then to a Farmer’s Market ... read more

Happy Canada Day Eh! Today's ride was fairly uneventful other than we turned over the 20,000 km mark! I can't quite believe I have still have feeling in my butt. Newport, Lincoln City, Cannon Beach and Seaside are all quaint little towns that we like to visit in the wintertime. We definitely dilly-dallyed along today, not wanting the trip to end. We also stopped for a couple of hours at the Lincoln Outlets. Surprise, I only bought workout gear. Oh dear. As we start to wrap up this adventure and these blogs (last one will be tomorrow), we have been thinking about what we would do differently if we were to do the same trip this time next year. Here's what worked well and what didn't, starting with things that drove us crazy that we simply ... read more

We coninued North through Salt Lake City and spent the 4th of July in a little Mormon town. Fortunately for us, we brought the makings for Happy Hour with us. To our surprise friends Cheryl and Allen were also there to share the holiday. While there we made a day trip to the Transcontinental railroad East/West connection at the Golden Spike. It would have never happened without the help of the Mormons. We left there and followed the Columbia River Gorge West to the Oregon Coast. This was a windy drive and it was all Tom could do to keep our new rig in our lane and on the road. We go to the Holiday Rambler factory next week and expect to get the squirrely steering fixed. The Pacific coastline is spectacular, albeit foggy. I won't ... read more

Day 50 We left the Seattle area behind on Sunday the 25th after having an excellent adventure with Mark. This visit was great timing for us since Mark will be leaving this area himself on Nov. 6, for his new job in Philadelphia. He got a call offering him a terrific job while we were driving along the shores of Crescent Lake. This has to be one of the most scenic areas on the Olympic peninsula - it is a huge lake surrounded by mountains. As he was ending his call a perfect rainbow appeared that spanned from one mountain peak to another - no kidding - it was like a good omen. We had to pull over and celebrate! The Olympic peninsula is a temperate rain forest- it gets 11 feet of rain a year ... read more

Had a relaxing day today. Slept in, got my oil changed, and headed South about 7 miles to Cannon Beach. Grabbed lunch and walked around the shops for a bit. Headed to the beach and read a book for about three hours. Doing laundry now and will be getting dinner sometime soon. Tomorrow, I'm on to Mt. St. Helen's and Seattle.... read more
