Airports are both my favorite place and my least favorite. Went through some terrible lines today. It is so much less frustrating to have my friends tapping their toes along with me, along with the occasional drunk falling into our group for a laugh. My friends supply some respite from frustration as we can laugh and talk rather than being so focused on the lines going nowhere and the people not thinking. The usual excitement that comes with travel seems dull this time around. I am excited to be here with literally ALL the friends I am closest to but the actual travel doesn’t give me the usual feeling of nerves and excitement. Perhaps they go hand in hand. My past trips I have been so much more alone going into it. In 2008 I was ... read more

Today is my day in the first official C of Ohio, Cleveland. The city has the popular reputation of an industrial mess. Much of this dates to one event in 1969. At the time, the city was an industrial powerhouse, and all those factories dumped their waste in the Cuyahoga River. One day, the river caught fire. Residents point out that other rivers caught fire before this, including previous fires on the Cuyahoga. This fire had the misfortune of occurring during the early years of the environmental movement, who made it a cause célèbre. The resulting campaign made the city a symbol of environmental wreckage, which it has never truly shed. (Sports fans have oth... read more

The wedding started promptly at 5.15pm and by the time we had arrived Al (the groom) was looking far more relaxed than he had for the past few days! With the boys all dressed up looking handsome we all took our seats. Lisa arrived on time and as you will see from the photos looked radiant. After an exchange of vows and some lovely I do’s they were married and looked as pleased as punch with each other. Now, these Americans know how to drink. The bar was stacked full of hard liquor which was being tucked into the moment after the ‘I do’s’ were done!! And talk about strong…even I had to ask the barman ‘please could you put more orange juice in my vodka and orange’!!! The kiwi contingent was full of life, showing ... read more

We arrived at San Francisco domestic airport and checked in our bags. "Where to?" the check-in man asked. "Cleveland" we said "???" he responded "Clevelaaaand??" "Why y'all going ta Clevelaaaannd?" "A wedding" we said. "Oh" replied the check-in man "Cause Clevelaaand aint whatcha call an international hot spot" "Very diplomatic" I said... The flight from San Francisco to Cleveland is 4 hours, 30 minutes but as we travel from US Pacific Time to US Eastern Time, we arrived 7 hours, 30 minutes after we left. We'd been advised by the Bride, Lisa, that the quickest way from the airport to the hotel was on the RTA Rapid Transit Rail system but she, as a Cleveland local had also told us 'in the spirit of full disclosure' (her words) that the RTA doesnt travel through the best ... read more

Day 7: Indiana to Cleveland, Ohio Peace, Joy and Love Brothers and Sisters, We had a groovy afternoon at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and despite a few flashbacks we again survived the 60's. I even noticed a few admiring glances at my faux lizard skin jeans....I choose to think they were admiring, anyway, and not "OMG! did you see what that old bat was wearing?" (By the way, this is Max writing and not John doing a complete fashion statement turnaround.) And yes! we are finally making headway towards the east coast. In fact, leaving Indiana, we are heading to ever more uncharted-except for the GPS- territory. FOODIE ALERT! On the way out of Indiana (which was by the way ever so much prettier than the way going into Indiana) into Ohio, I ... read more

After taking a day off from travel and sightseeing we got up early today and took Karlie to doggy day camp so that we could spend a leisurely day in Cleveland seeing the sights and not having to worry about her in the heat. The drive to Cleveland from our campground was very easy and we found the city to be very easy to manuever around in as well. The Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame was our main destination and we were not disappointed. It is a very hoppin' loud place as you can imagine with lots going on. They were having a Les Paul tribute weekend when we happened to be there and so they had a trailer of Les Paul Gibson guitars out front to see. Craig, we thought of you and how much you ... read more

I have arrived in the Cleveland area for a week of orientation before I take off for Johannesburg on Saturday. I am staying with a host family with 4 children: Jack-18 Anna-15 Eliza-12 and Mira-9 I am staying in Jack's room while he is out of town for the week so it is basically me and 3 girls (why cant I ever have a brother?) They are a very nice family and live about 40 minutes outside of Cleveland, but only 15 minutes away from the Ambassadors in Sport office. I will be starting my orientation tomorrow and am looking forward to meeting the staff and also learning more about specifics about my time in South Africa. Coming off of a fun-filled wedding weekend in northern Michigan with my college friends and girlfriend, my emotions are ... read more

Overnight Megabus to Cleveland from Chicago. Not bad - took a Tylenol pm. Cleveland, Akron, Day 1 Arrived early to downtown Cleveland. My friend is lost and is very late. I walk around. Friend arrives - we get some grub at Cafe-Ah-Roma. Server is cute; I flirt. I got a pumpkin spread bagel. There is a church next door - I explain to my friend my enjoyment of gothic church architecture. We are in the University circle on our way to North Chagrin Reservation. Still cannot pronounce Chagrin correctly. There is a castle. The park is very pretty. Leaves are almost all off the trees. We park, get a map and start walking to the castle. My friend and I have diarrhea of the mouth - we go the wrong way. There are dogs - lots ... read more
