My name is Ryan. My favorite thing to do is be uncomfortable. Being in an uncomfortable or unfamiliar situation is where you discover who you truly are as it leaves you as the only constant. I achieve this through many different and varied mediums. Travel, though, is the one that I find most exhilarating and the one through which I can truly find myself. I also explore myself through improv comedy, music, theatre, and scuba diving.

I liked the Vatican tour so much more this time around. The excavations were really amazing. Our tour guide, Taras, was so entertaining and knowledgeable he gave us the book he wrote on the very subject! We also got his name and card. My favorite part was when we said an Our Father in front of the tomb of St. Peter. All of us in unison and I just felt something. I almost cried and so I hung back and left last, adding another small prayer. It reminded me that I might need to accept God a bit more and make him a bigger part of my life. I was soon pulled from my contemplative state when the reality of travel hit. Next thing I know we are sprinting to the train. It was nice to ... read more

There is disconnect today. I don’t know where. It could be the city; maybe it’s me. I just got a strange feeling of missing my Rome group. Maybe it is because I didn’t know those people. There is a certain satisfaction and excitement in experiencing new things with new people who know just as little as you do. There is more acceptance and less annoyance (at least at first), more working together and less independence. Going on a tour for a second time was both interesting and boring. I feel like I have lost interest or awe or something. I am just going through the motions right now. How does one go about fulfilling oneself in these situations? I had the urge today to leave everyone I know and just go, meet some Italians, struggle with ... read more

A small Italian child spit on Tyler. It was freaking adorable. The child got sprayed in the face at a water fountain and we all laughed at him so he enacted his vengeance. We sang at 12 o’clock mass at San Francesco. We walked over to rehearse singing Sicut Cervus, Ubi Caritas, I Can Tell the World, Lux Arumque, and Veni Sancte Spiritus. When we sang Lux just before the service I teared up. We sounded so good and I just felt amazing in the 4-second acoustics. The church was gorgeous and it was magical to hear our voices reverberating in the Cathedral. The mass was boring but I followed some of it and got some of the homily, not that I remember what I heard. We sang well though and it gave me time to ... read more

Today we headed toward Assisi, via bus. We played mafia the whole way. In essence people are secretly assigned a character one or two people act as "mafia" and kill off the villagers. The villagers then vote out who they think is mafia. In the end if more mafia remain then villagers the mafia wins. Kind of ironic that we consistantly played Mafia in Italy. I love that game, we can yell and fight and it is funny; which, is all I have ever wanted. Assisi is a town on a hill and it is gorgeous, but something feels strange. We walked to a couple of churches, the house of Saint Francis, and a citadel way above the town with a gorgeous panoramic view. It reminds me of Toledo, Spain but artificial. It is so picturesque ... read more

It is strange, but, last time I left Walsh University’s campus in Castel Gandolfo, Casa Mennesianna (what we simply yet affectionately called, “The Casa”), in 2008, I wasn’t sure I would ever be back. It feels so good. Campus is as gorgeous as I remember it. It is nice to see my romanticized memory isn’t very far off at all. I can’t wait to see what I remember of Rome. Alissa and I tried to sneak up to the roof before the swarms of singers discover its simple yet impressive beauty, but were thwarted by the cleaning staff on the third floor. So, we walked down to the olive orchard and back. I think we have shared some of the melancholic feelings that the start of the trip has brought. It was nice to escape with ... read more

Airports are both my favorite place and my least favorite. Went through some terrible lines today. It is so much less frustrating to have my friends tapping their toes along with me, along with the occasional drunk falling into our group for a laugh. My friends supply some respite from frustration as we can laugh and talk rather than being so focused on the lines going nowhere and the people not thinking. The usual excitement that comes with travel seems dull this time around. I am excited to be here with literally ALL the friends I am closest to but the actual travel doesn’t give me the usual feeling of nerves and excitement. Perhaps they go hand in hand. My past trips I have been so much more alone going into it. In 2008 I was ... read more
