Today was the day to check out the UNC campus!!! The thing I have always been waiting for!! We started by checking out the fields, my favorite place on campus. We did all this before our regular tour happened with a real guide. Her name was Dominique and she was a junior on campus. She brought us to a classroom, a library, and also a fitness center. We also walked in to the cafeteria which had a large variety of food. There are over 20,000 students there and they usually only let in 14% of out of state students. The average SAT test score is 1400. My mom says that's high. It is in the perfect location for a college since it has restaurants within walking distance so you don't have to waste gas driving everywhere. ... read more

We landed in NC this morning very tired. We picked up are rental car from BUDGET and headed towards our hotel. We are staying at the Sheraton Inn in Chapel Hill. Mom and I were both very tired so we decided to take a power nap for 5 hours. By the time we woke up it was time to go explore the city of Chapel Hill and its restaurants. We parked our car in a parking lot and walked down Franklin Street, it is the busiest street or i should say main street of any other city. We found a cold stone and decided to be italians and have dessert before the main course. We asked our icecream maker where the best southern food was and she said Crook's Corner which is very good. Only .6 ... read more

For the last few days of the trip, we were settling Vanessa in at school in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. When we first arrived at her apartment building, we were horrified because the building was poorly designed and there was absolutely no security at the entrance to the building. There were little places where people could just hide behind and just mug you because you didn’t see them there. But we found her a nice apartment in another building, and it was a lot safer. Now she is living there with her two close friends. While we were there, we also hung out with my Aunt Amy, Uncle Joaquin, and constantly growing cousin Iago, who is so cute! Once we ate cupcakes at a cupcakery called Bliss. They sell about six different kinds of cupcakes including ... read more

Hi friends! :) Just wanted to post an update on the status of my Korea plans. Things have gotten a little crazy with paperwork and official stuff, and I am no longer planning on leaving next week. Instead I will be leaving sometime in or around July 27th. Even though this process has been more than a little frustrating, I am grateful and excited for the extra time that I am going to get to spend with family and friends that I might not have otherwise been able to see before heading off. Thanks for your support so far and here's hoping that the next couple weeks of preparation go off without a hitch... Love, Mary... read more

Today we headed out from Nashville to Chapel Hill to visit Lisa, Jason and Jack. The drive ended up taking much longer than the navigation system, i-phone, and various websites had predicted, but it was definitely a pretty one. Along the way we saw a beautiful sunset over the smokey mountains and felt fortunate to not have seen a single deer! The moon has been quite a sight the past few days, but unfortunately doesn't photograph. We lost an hour during today's trip and feel much closer to our final destination now that we are officially in the east coast time zone! The car is beginning to feel pretty cramped and we a little lazy due to the lack of movement throughout our days. We are looking forward to getting out of the car and actually ... read more

I have to say it is nice to be on the road again. When I am staying with my friends for more than a day or 2, sometimes it feels like I am not doing anything productive. I don’t really enjoy leaving my friends, but after I leave it feels like I am experiencing life in a whole new way. There is just something about being on the bike and soaking up my surroundings. I had some odd experiences throughout my day so far. I rode on the Blue Ridge Parkway for about 60 miles, and what a beautiful area! The speed limit is 10mph faster than on Skyline Drive, so it makes some of the turns a lot more interesting. The road is in great shape, and there are some awesome stretches of road and ... read more

The last few weeks have been rather hectic, what with me traveling around for vacations, moving out of my apartment, and finishing off the last things I need to take care of before heading out to Japan. Tomorrow I fly out to begin my adventures abroad. I have to admit that I'm getting a little nervous. I know that I'll be okay, but I always get nervous about flying, and not because I'm afraid of flying persay, but because I'm dislike airports. They always manage to mess things up. They create stress. The flight itself is relaxing, compared to the airport. I'm just about finished packing up my apartment to move out, but I'll wait until I'm back from Japan to do the final touches, such as cleaning and vacuuming. For now I'm just going ... read more

So I am about ready to roll. Heading to California by car, then who knows where. At the present my instinct tells me to drive down to central america and sell my car in Costa Rica, then hop on a boat and go to Brazil and then maybe fly to Africa. I want to do it all, but I know I can't. I'm just glad I am finally leaving. Hope the road conditions are not too bad. The difference in success and failure, in winning and losing, and yes even in life and death, is in doing something almost right and in doing it exactly right. I have been on the phone for an hour and 10 minutes now telling people over and over again my subscriber number and my "problem". The doctor said I had to call Blue Cross Blue Shield (my insurance), Blue Cross said I had to call Medco and Medco said I had to call Blue Cross. So I talked to Blue Cross and then called Medco and then called Blue Cross back again and they connected me to Medco! This is freaking RIDICULOUS!!!! I swear to the lordy if I am on this phone at 3pm I am going to scream. Oh, and what am I trying to do? I'm trying to get Prior Authorization so I can get a year's worth of birth control pills (because I live in China and it's not logical for me ... read more

So I realize that I'm here in a hometown where I know almost no one at all except my parents and my sister but for some reason I feel more alone here than normal sometimes. I don't really feel like I can go up to people and randomly talk like I do in most places. There are some strange places where I feel a little bit more comfortable, like talking to people about trekking in the Provisions store. I've noticed I haven't seen a single Chinese speaking person the entire time I've been here. I saw a Chinese couple in the restaurant yesterday and a Japanese couple at a bookstore I went with my father a couple days back, but besides them I haven't even really seen many Asians. It's funny, when you travel to Japan, ... read more
