We returned to North Carolina, but this time we stopped in the south western part of the state at Asheville. The mountains surround this quaint town and provide amazing opportunities for enjoying all the beauty that God gave us in this place. I really enjoyed driving a portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway, stopping many times to take in the views. The parkway is a scenic national parkway of 469 miles that runs from the Shenandoah National Park near Roanoke, Virginia to the boundary between the Great Smokey Mountains National Park and the Cherokee Indian Reservation. It is a beautiful drive with lots of switchbacks that climb up mountains and then go back down into valleys. You have to drive slow for the curves which gives you time to take it all in. Asheville has a ... read more

Geo: 35.5984, -82.5531Overnight, I woke up about once an hour and looked outside to see if it was raining yet. Hermine has been downgraded to a tropical storm, but the weather report still shows she is going to mess up our plans to visit the Outer Banks. It was hard for us desert-dwellers to make a decision about staying while the storm passed over the area or leaving before it got any closer. We finally decided to leave Charleston without having seen much of it at all and take the highway that runs perpendicular to the coast to get away from the effects of Hermine as soon as we could. I was concerned that even though the wind was going to be manageable, we were on the end of a peninsula in an area that was ... read more

It has been awhile since my first post because my focus has been on my recent move from Wisconsin to North Carolina. The official move was about a month ago yet seems like it was more like several months ago. It is interesting how the concept of time can be somewhat distorted by our perception. I have been here alone the majority of the time with exception of my constant companion, Taffy, my 8 year old miniature Dachshund. Currently, I am sitting in the back yard of the home we chose to settle in for the next year or so, throwing Taffy's beloved ball. In between throws, she spends 10 minutes or so sniffing the ground in a rather focused, intense way that can only mean there are some other very interesting creatures sharing this space ... read more

The first snow fall of 2014 came to Asheville NC on November 1st. We were planning on being out of the mountains before the snow came. Everyone said it was 7 weeks early. Our date to leave the area heading south was 4th November. We had about 4 inches on most surfaces. The roads were ok where we were. They did close parts of the Blue Ridge Pkwy for this storm. Here are some images of our first snow in Asheville NC.... read more

We traveled the Blue Ridge Pkwy often while staying at Taps RV park in Asheville. The Pkwy entrance was very close to the RV park. It was a beautiful drive both north and south from there. We often took an exit to explore the nearby towns and we saw amazing sights and found wonderful places to eat and places to walk around. As time went on the fall colors set in and it was breath taking to see. Here are some images from those great road trips. (I hope I have done the area and the scenes justice).... read more

On October 5, 2014 we loaded up and headed to Asheville NC to spend a month there to see the fall colors come to the mountains. It was 185 miles to Taps RV in Asheville. We saw some pretty sights as we got into the mountains and we could smell the fresh mountain air. We started to see a few hints of fall colors on a tree here and there. It was great to pull into Taps RV park and the park was cool. The owner Bill helped guide us into the spot - it was a little tight. We got set up and noticed you could see some cool views of the mountains from the park. Pops got up around 7, put Lola in bed with me and left to go to Jason's. They are going to blow the leaves out of his yard down to the creek. His yard has lots of trees. I enjoyed so much snuggling with Lola and slowly waking up. We got up and made coffee and hot chocolate. We used the leftover liquid chocolate for her hot chocolate. It was so good! We are making Pumpkin pancakes and applewood bacon for breakfast. Jason, Amy and Pops will join us in a bit. I found this recipe on 'My Baking Addiction' website. I am not a pancake lover and these were so, so good. Very much worth the effort...especially when you have an 8 year old helper who loves cooking. Ken and I slept in until around 8 am. We leisurely enjoyed coffee by the fireplace and then took a walk around the lake in the park. You will probably hear me say this many times, I absolutely love autumn. The blue sky, the crisp air, and the smell of the leaves and of course the colorful leaves. We ate cereal, showered then went for a drive. Amy is running a half marathon in Cherokee, NC this morning, so they left early this morning. We will meet up with them later. We drove through some beautiful neighborhoods in Asheville and then headed up to Weaverville. This is such a beautiful part of the country. Jason called and said they ran in to traffic (leaf peepers) on the way back home from Cherokee. Amy wants to go ... read more
