On Wednesday night we took my rental car back to the airport - one day early. This will make getting out of town on Thursday so much faster. I got off work Thursday about 3 pm and Ken picked me up at the hospital. We are headed to our RV in Asheville, NC. Bella and Lola are spending the weekend with us; we will pick them up after school on Friday. We have to pick our RV up from "storage". Before we went to Tucson we took the RV to 'Jason's' father's house to store it. Jason is the maintenance man at the RV campground we are staying in. It's very nice of him to let us do this as it usually costs a fair amount to store it. The place where he said we could ... read more

We decided to put our coffee in to-go cups and take a walk this morning. We walked down to the tent and yurt area. I guess that's why they call it Campfire Lodgings. I've never seen a yurt. I don't think I'd want to stay in one....seems a bit claustrophobic. It's foggy this morning, the temperature is cooler..fall is in the air. As we are walking along the trail, I suddenly stop because in front of me is a huge spider web. I would have freaked out if I had walked in to it! I made Ken walk in front of me and we see lots of spider webs! I took a few pictures, they are hard to photograph. We walked back to our RV and finished our OJ. Our neighbors who bought all the shoes ... read more

Well there was no rush this AM to beat the rain....it succeeded in arriving with a vengence at 5 AM.(or possibly before). Ralf slept in while we packed up and headed to Cracker Barrel for breakfast and the futile hope for sunshine. My carfeful routing went south when I discovered a sign stating detour for bridge on 141. Bypassed the exit and on to the conventional route to Gatlinburg. This entailed going thru Pidgeon Forge AND Gatlinburg...a traffic experience in the rain that would make a colonoscopy seem pleasant. On down 141thru Newfoundland Gap in either fog or clouds or both accompied by rain. Finally arrived in Asheville at Eurosport BMW and were number 1 and 2 to register and get passes. Then on to the Biltmore where we discovered no camping till Wednesday. Also found ... read more

Drove hard for a few days across the dreaded tornado alley and made it...im sure you'd'a heard otherwise if we hadnt... We slowed down the caravan in western North Carolina at the base of the Blue Ridge Parkway and started our slow journey north up the 469 mile scenic parkway...a curvy hilly road that meanders through the forested hills of the Appalachian mountain range....good distant views of the layers of hills that do seem to have a blue haze. We've done many short hikes off the parkway and are greatly enjoying the landscape and the weather. This is the landscape that reminds us of home, green forests, streams, rivers and the crisp fresh mountain air. The weather we both agree couldnt be more perfect, mid 70's during the day with sunshine and a few wispy clouds ... read more

Well we put in some serious miles the past few days- yesterday driving a total of 19 hours behind the wheel! We made it- Blue Ridge Parkway which stretches from North Carolina to Virginia. We are anxious to get out of the car and explore! Just got a map of the area and are headed into the woods- should be here for a few days at least with limitEd service. Xoxo SP*... read more

Geri invited me down to Asheville, North Carolina to spend a few days with her family and friends. Geri’s mother and father, Margaret and George, had rented a great little cabin in the Blue Ridge Mountains just outside Asheville. Geri’s best friend Shelly flew in from California. We hiked around the mountains, walked around Asheville, and ate really amazing food. Margaret is a gourmet chef. George is a geocache bandit. It was a very delightful visit. Back in NYC now, bracing for hurricane Sandy.... read more

Well the arrival in Ashville was fairly impressive itself. We drove into town and decided that we should definitely have flowers for the soon to be Shannon Tourto a.k.a Shorto! Especially as I was showing up to their wedding uninvited without ever having met the two before. So we went to a supermarket, picked some flowers up and drove to the Tourto abode. What better way to arrive than sitting on the kayak on the roof of the car with flowers in between our legs singing, 'The night they drove old dixie down' by the Band, Needless to say Shannon and Anthony both loved the entrance. The next couple of days were an interesting time for me, trying to get to know two people quickly who were about to go through a massive moment in their ... read more

July 6, 2010 On a sultry July morning we (and a few thousand others) toured America's largest house, the Biltmore, located in Ashville, North Carolina. Opened in 1895 by George Vanderbilt, the 250 room home was opened to the public in 1930. It is not a cheap tour. We were able to get $40 tickets through AAA. You can also receive a small discount if you buy your tickets on line. On the day we went full price tickets were $60 each. Your ticket will allow you a self-guided tour of the house, gardens, winery, and farm. For an additional $10 you can rent an audio guide. There are also other specialty tours that range in price from $17-$19. All in all a visit to the Biltmore can set you back $60-$90 per person. We opted ... read more

After a night in DC we rode into Asheville, North Carolina for an organic good time. The city is bigger than it seems and each corner is filled with charm. Almost all of the businesses in downtown Asheville are locally owned. Passing by each shop and cafe you can feel a warmth specific to this town’s character. They advertise local living, educated consumerism and quality products. Famous for it’s hippie lifestyle and delicious water, Asheville was a great lil spot to stop and rest for a bit.... read more
