I'll be blunt. This place is fucking cool. I was there for two days and saw a dismally small number of tourist attractions largely due to time constraints but also because it rained the whole time. Luckily, there are about 2 million places to buy $3 umbrellas. I met some Australian guy who had about as much time as I did, so we went and saw the Empire state building, I had a ticket to go up but didn't bother that day because it was wet and raining and I wasn't going waste it to go all the way to the top and look at clouds and rain about 3 inches from my nose. But I experienced the New York subway (which yes has a few odd characters, but after now living in Toronto for two ... read more

I'm sitting in front of my desktop computer at home in Thousand Oaks, California, gearing up to write an entry covering my recent trip out east (New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland). It's been over a month since I returned from SE Asia. I loved my experiences on the other side of the globe and have every intention of returning. One of the biggest developments from my travels in SE Asia was meeting Saai, my Thai girlfriend. My trip out east was a result of my desire to see Saai again. Saai is working in Carneys Point, New Jersey, along with 13 other Thai university students during their summer break. They are working at a travel stop (Burger King, Starbucks, TCBY, gas station, etc.) off the New Jersey Turnpike. It's not the ideal summer ... read more

So back to New York again and as always, great fun with great friends... Decided to stay with Leyla for the first few days since I would be spending most of my time with her. First day on my own, took a coach from The Bronx to the city. I surprisingly met a woman on the bus from Wales who had moved from London to New York to be with her husband. We were chatting for throughout the journey, so it seemed really short. Said our goodbyes and decided to check out the new attraction "Top of the Rock" at The Rockafella Centre... Was interesting, and the view was great as always... I never seem to get enough of the New York City view!!! My second home for sure... Later on met up with Leyla and ... read more

Rough morning today, dinner last night was just a bunch of appetizers and beer so my stomach pretty much hates me today. We were on the road by 9am and on our way to New York. Being that we were going down during the week and it was still early there were only about 5 cars ahead of us at the border. "Why are you coming into the US?" the friendly border guard asked. "Terrorism of course, that President Bush just has to die!" I replied. I really don't like latex gloves anymore. HAHA Just kidding, the border there and back went smooth as butter. I LOVE CRUISE CONTROL. Driving in New York is nowhere nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be. Normal rules of the road are complete suggestions down here. ... read more

The journey from Washington to New York was not very long, only four hours in total! When we arrived we thought we would get on the metro as had been told it was very simple! What a lie! Well I expect that when half the lines are not closed it would be easy but as we were even wrongly directed by an attendant it was not easy!!!!!! It is even worse than the tube in London on a weekend. Once having eventually changed trains about four times we found our hostel, with a few directions offered to us from people who must have read the ‘where the hell am I look’ on our faces! I am not too bad at directions and finding my way around, however this trip is made a bit harder as Thommo ... read more

It seems to me that a lot of people always rhapsodize about places they have traveled to or places that they plan on traveling to. Frequently they do this at the expense of the place that they call home. I am extremely guilty of this. Sometimes I need to stop and look around and realize all the good things that this place has to offer. The reason that I am thinking about this now is that we here in New York have seen some gorgeous weather the past few days. It was 74°F today and the sun is shining. The temperature today in my future home, Sapporo, was 44°F. And it hasn't even reached 50°F there yet this year. This nice spring weather is something I am going to miss next year. I love when the ... read more

She was still undergoing her multi-million dollar renovation but the Martin house is still incredible. The neighborhood was incredible as well, not far from one of Olmstead's parks, there were a number of Victorian homes providing stoic and stark contrast against the low slung lines of Wright. Highly recommend on a visit to Buffalo. The houses in the neighborhood are all beautiful but the tour guides love to draw comparisons between the success of Wright's designs and the pitfalls for the more traditional.... read more

Our flight from Las Vegas back to Los Angeles was very bumpy as there were storms. When we went to check in for our next flight, our itinerary was not on the system and we were told that all our ongoing flights had been cancelled!!!! Some computer glitch - all was eventually resolved - not happy :( Had a 6 hour flight to New York, arriving at night. Next morning we took the subway to 42nd street and Times Square. We visited the library (for Sam) and then walked down 5th Avenue, saw the Chrysler building and onto the Empire State building. We only went inside the Empire State as the queue to go to the top was halfway down the next block. We had brunch in a diner on 5th Avenue. We walked around some ... read more

Manny decided we should take a road trip for both of our birthdays driving up the Lake Erie shore up to Niagara Falls, Canada. This blog covers our drive up to Buffalo, NY. We stayed one night in Erie, PA and one night in Buffalo, NY. Erie wasn't much to talk about although we found a great little restaurant for a birthday dinner and Presque Isle State Park was nice at sunset. Erie seems to be a stacking of old brick warehouses and factories with asphalt and railroad tracks. The most interesting thing in Erie (I almost forgot) was the US Brig Niagara, which I sadly did not take a picture of on account of the lousy lake weather we were having and the fact that I did not have a wide angle lens for the ... read more
