Connie and I have been friends for more than 35 years. We've raised five children between us, married husbands, divorced husbands, moved across the country, and become grandmothers. But the cement that has held us together since 1995 is TRAVEL. That was the year we took a UK/Paris trip together which commenced my wanderlust. We met in Springfield, MO, but twenty years ago Connie moved to Washington, D.C. and I moved to Florida; we visit each other’s home when possible, but when Connie suggested a trip to her birthplace, New York City, I was over the top with anticipation! I was way overdue to experience the Big Apple; it promised to be a quick but thorough trip with one of the best guides possible. When Connie e-mailed me my "Margaret in the City" itinerary, I knew ... read more

Why airplane food taste so bad Airplane food has a bad reputation, but the food itself isn’t entirely to blame—the real fault lies with the plane. A 2015 Cornell University study, reported by Time, found that the environment inside an airplane actually alters the way food and drink tastes—sweet items tasted less sweet, while salty flavors were heightened. The dry recycled air inside the plane cabin doesn’t help either as low humidity can further dull taste and smell making everything in a plane seem bland. According to a 2010 study from the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics in Germany, it’s about 30 percent more difficult to detect sweet and salty tastes when you’re up in the air. We all slept well again and we woke up with a little more pep in our step. We started the day off with a timed ticket to the Statue of Liberty so we had to hit the ground running. Step one was finding the right Subway to take to Battery Park. I have a Subway map that really helps out but in some cases it was hard to figure out exactly where you were on the map. The good news is that our apartment was right around a bunch of Subway stops so getting the right one was pretty convenient. Riding the subway is always fun for us. This one was packed so we had to stand most of the way. No big deal. I think it was about a 15 minute ride from Times Square ... read more

NYC sounds and sites - Top of Rock, Museum, Central Park and Wax Museum How did we sleep the first night in the apartment? Well we all passed out. Timmy passed out in the weirdest position. There is a little couch in the master bedroom/living room and he was kneeling with his head on the couch. He was out! Jeff had to move him to the bed. Kirby of course was gone and slept in his clothes. Jeff and I are sleeping in the bed that is closest to the street. We were lulled to sleep by the sounds of cars honking, ambulance sirens, police sirens and the hum of the backup beeper on a delivery truck. I really didn't care. After I hit my heads hit the pillow I was gone. The apartment only has ... read more

Welcome to New York City!! This is where theory meets reality. The theory of New York City I have been working on for six months on and off. So here's how the story of today goes...it's a long one but it's a funny one! Super Shuttle I looked around at other shuttle services but for some reason I kept coming back to the SuperShuttle. No real reason. All the services were basically the same rate and had the same type of car options. When our plane landed I received a text message from the SuperShuttle service with instructions on how to check in so after we got our baggage I went through the online check in process. It was real simple. I followed a link they texted me and then in received a confirmation text back. ... read more

A slight drizzle fell from the grey skies onto the pavement as I walked from my hotel to catch the downtown A train to the South Ferry stop in New York City. My destination was the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island—symbols of the United States’ history of welcoming immigrants into our country. After arriving at the Statue of Liberty, the sun began to force its way through the gloom, revealing the magnificent Manhattan skyline across the Hudson River. It has been 10 years since I had visited New York City. I’d be the first to admit that I am not a city person. But in small doses, I am invigorated by the pulse of a large and diverse metropolitan area. My recent four-day sojourn in New York City reminded me that visiting big cities can ... read more

Sadly this was our final day of what had been an absolutely amazing trip which I would never forget and I created a lot of great memories! It was amazing how quickly the 3 weeks had gone and that we all were heading back to work on Monday. We left our suitcases with the concierge and booked a taxi back to the airport at 4pm. After a customary trip to Starbucks, I think Grant managed to get about 7 different names in there (I am pretty sure by the end they were doing it deliberately) Grant went off to meet his uncle for lunch and the rest of us went to Five Guys where I spent the last $15 that I had left on me. I had just about managed to make it last right up ... read more

Everyone wanted to go shopping today as everyone had left it last minute to get gifts to bring home to friends and family. I had some great fun in the Nintendo store playing the new Zelda and Mario Kart 8, I think a few people were a little annoyed that we spend so much time in there. This took most of the morning and once completed I suggested we spend the rest of the afternoon walking through Central Park. I thought it would be a great idea to try and walk the whole way through Central Park, needless to say this was a terrible idea (everyone really should have stopped listening to me at this point!) especially since we all had loads of shopping bags to carry around! It too nearly 3 hours to get halfway ... read more

I wanted to get an early start on the day so that we could head down to Katz's deli which was something that I had seen on Man vs Food and the sandwiches in there looked amazing. It was located in the east village relatively close to the area we were drinking in on Halloween. No-one wanted to walk so we took the subway down to the closest station to the deli. On arrival you took a ticket and whatever you ordered was logged on that ticket and you then paid for your food when leaving which I though was quite a novel idea. Alex ordered the pastrami sandwich and after trying this I also ordered the same. Grant initially went to order a turkey sandwich but he was laughed at by the people behind the ... read more

I had booked the Statue of Liberty tour for today although I wasn't sure that any of us would be up in time to get there. I woke up and definitely still felt drunk and I don't think that I was the only one who felt that way! Somehow we were all able to get up and we took the subway down to the financial district and walked down to Battery Park from there which was where the boat would leave to take us to Liberty Island. Along the way Jake wanted to stop for a drink at 7/11 but Jack would no allow him to do so! It was a short ferry ride over to the island and the view of Manhattan was spectacular. I had booked tickets that would allow us to go to ... read more
