Joe decided he wanted to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge so that is what we did. It was another adventurous day in the NYC subway system. After we did the bridge we took another train to Grand Central Station. It was an amazing thing to see. People and trains going in every direction. Once again the building architectures fascinated me so more pictures of them, too. Finally we headed out to the Bronx to see Yankee Stadium since my grandson is such a big fan. We wanted to get down on the street to see the whole stadium, but all of the elevators were out of service. Not really a good thing for someone who can't do the stairs anymore.... read more

The original plan was to go to Sri lanka and india before coming home, but after thinking about it and after much deliberation (and partly by being reminded of south america whilst being in the phillipines) we decided that south america was really where our hearts lay, and that you only get to do the trip once, so why not go back? The flights were prettymuch the same as what it wouldve cost for india plus our visa, so it was a no brainer. We decided on colombia and mexico, just leaving out peru and ecuador, and some of bolivia from mainland SA. In order to get there, the cheapest flights were via NY and its much cheaper flying back from cancun, so colombia was first. But why not visit new york rather than just pass ... read more

This was a trip that I never expected to make, a place that I would only see in movies and listen to the stories of my mates when they had ventured to this famous city. It was only by chance that another exchange teacher from Adelaide, who is working in Denver, asked me if I wanted to join her in New York then go on a 3 day tour up to Niagara Falls, Toronto and Thousand Islands on the Canadian, American border. As you may be aware from my previous blogs, money was not really encouraging me to attend this trip, but with the knowledge that my tax cheque was soon to be entered in my bank account I decided to to take the plunge and go on the trip. There was always something in the ... read more

Lovely to be in a place where you don't have to wear a scarf in summer. We were so tired out from the flights that we couldn't get up the energy to order in the nice looking organic-everything cafe we were seated in and ended up ordering $1 pizza from a hole-in-the-wall type place. It was absolutely delicious. Then we came back to the hotel and realised that ''Happy Hour" included free food (ish) and family-orientated drinks. The laundry was free, so Simon stationed himself down there for the night and chatted with the other guys also on laundry duty. He might have popped into the bar at some stage. The people who had initially inspired us to visit New York were out of the country, ironically, so we had made plans for touristy things to ... read more

Our last day in New York saw us rising early once again to join the throngs of people in Soho lining up to get their hands on a legendary Dominique Ansel Cronut. This award winning bakery is world famous due to its invention of the Cronut - a croissant-donut hybrid. The lines begin to form an hour before opening and disappear around the block. Customers are limited to two Cronuts per person and there is only one flavour which changes monthly. This month's mouthwatering flavour is Rum, caramelised banana and brown sugar ganache. Thankfully I escaped June's flavour of Key Lime Coconut! It was well worth the wait, standing in line for over an hour, for one of these light, fluffy and creamy delicacies. Scrumdiddlyumptious was Izzy's description and Bruce and Lily collectively described it as ... read more

Today's plan was fairly simple: Circle Line Cruise = 1 hour Empire State Building = 1-2 hours Afternoon and dinner with Steve and Judy in the West Village The plan went awry the minute we sat on the boat and were told the 1 hour cruise I thought I'd booked was actually a two and a half hour cruise. We soon arrived at Plan B and decided on postponing the ascent of the Empire State until later in the evening and get a night time view of the city instead. So, the day started with a walk along 42nd Street and I can't tell you how impressed I am that the second she saw the sign for 42nd Street, Izzy's first reaction was to start singing a Bryan Adams song - I have taught her well! ... read more

When I first read Truman Capote's Breakfast at Tiffany's aged about 15, I vowed to take the title at its word and do exactly that one day. A short walk from our hotel, grabbing take-out breakfast on our way to the flagship store at Fifth and 57th, I finally realised my dream. The coffee and warm panini went down a treat on this overcast Independence Day morning. Next stop was the Pulitzer fountain which stands in the Grand Army Plaza opposite Central Park and was the inspiration for the fountain featured in the opening titles of Friends. Although nobody was willing to jump in the fountain and dance around to The Rembrandts, it was a pleasant rest stop before entering the park. We spent a few hours wandering aimlessly along the park pathways, enjoying the street ... read more

So it has come to the attention of my family that I am technologically challenged. The selfie stick comes out and there is a communal groan. I just can't do it. I can't hold the phone out and press the button at the same time. When using the selfie stick, I can't angle the phone to get us all in the shot whilst seeing something of the background. I have a Diploma in Professional Photography but my selfies suck! Our first day in NYC began with a hair raising cab ride down to Battery Park - at least there seems to be road rules here unlike in Paris where the roads are just a free for all. Arriving a little early for our departure to Liberty Island, we bought breakfast from a local deli and sat ... read more
