Olivia Starling

Olivia Starling

My name is Olivia. I am born and raised in Tallahassee, FL (USA).

Tallahassee is a great place to raise children and there are is plenty to do here. From backyard parties to swimming in a natural spring. You never know what the weekend will hold with two very active boys.

Over the summer we traveled to Europe and I started a blog called www.mtb/org/starlingsacrossthepond. I really enjoyed writing the blog and see how many people read it. It was kind of addicting.

I am not the best writer and we really aren't world travelers. We mainly travel in Florida, Georgia and Alabama (USA). We mostly camp or go to the beach. Occasionally we will take a cruise. We even have stay-cations in Tallahassee from time to time.

We started camping in a pop-up camper about 5 or 6 years ago. After about 2 or 3 years of camping in the pop-up we upgraded to a 33ft travel traveler. We camp all over North Florida and South Georgia.

Looking forward to having you guys on our travels.

Spring Break - Day 1 When I was growing up our Spring Breaks consisted of going to visit my moms family in Panama City. My Meme (grandmother) lived a couple of houses from the bay. My aunt, uncle and cousins would come visit us at Meme’s. We spent many vacations at my Meme’s that we even got to know the neighbors and neighborhood kids. Meme always had a pound cake waiting for us and green kool-aid. I don’t remember much tv watching and surely there weren’t any computers. We’d play in the bay, climb trees in my Meme’s yard, wander around the neighborhood and jump on the neighbors trampoline. My mom would let us walk down to the bay to play in the water. She would not think allowing her grandchildren to do that this day ... read more

Day 5 We started the day off by going to the Exchange on the Army base. Lori showed us where her son’s school is located and where she works on base. She signed us into the base and we went and ate at the Food Court. We browsed the shops and made a few purchases. They have lots of shops at the Exchange. One is shop has German ornaments, nutcrackers, clocks and lots of other wood working. There is a nail salon, a barber shop and a bunch of kiosks that have things from Japan, India and Germany. Lori bought a drindle to wear to Octoberfest when she goes with friends in a couple of weeks. A drindle is one of those German dresses that you see in the movies. We’ve gotten into a bit of a routine. Everyone kind of wakes up on their own and does their own morning routine and once everyone in’s fully awake we move out and start our day of sight seeing. This morning Cheryl and I wanted a Diet Coke so we walked down to the village center with Connor (Lori’s son). He is 10th grade and goes to a high school on the Army base. It was nice chatting with him to and from the bakery. Makes me miss the boys. I could picture myself chatting with them as we walk the neighborhood. On the agenda (that’s what Mandy calls the itinerary) we are going to eat breakfast at a Chocolate factory, shop at the Birkenstock Outlet, visit a castle and going to eat at fun German Restaurant. ... read more

Day 3 Leinfelden, Germany When we rented the car yesterday Mandy joked with the attendant and said, ‘we have to walk to the car? You aren’t going to bring it to us?’ She laughed at her and said, ‘This isn’t the US, honey, this is Germany the home on no service.’ Ha! Yep, that pretty much sums up our experience with Germans so far. I think Jason (Lori’s husband) explained it well when he told us that Germans think they are being polite by leaving you alone. We got to Lori’s neighborhood and it is so cute. I find it a little weird that there are shutters on the outside of the house. After being in Lori’s house I can assume it’s because of the way the windows all tilt out. The shutters just remind me ... read more

Day 2 - Planes, trains, automobiles and very little sleep It’s kind of hard to figure out where Day 1 ends and Day two begins. By the time we landed in Philadelphia we were tired. With only a couple hours of sleep and traveling we were exhausted and tired. At this point during the travels you start to read each other a little bit and it was very apparent that we needed food immediately. We walked from the concourse we landed at to concourse A. It was a bit of a walk but it was really an enjoyable walk through the shops that lined each concourse. I love airports. I love people watching. I the journey to get to your destination. We decided on a little restaurant called Chickie’s and Pete’s. We all ordered a Philly ... read more

Well, I thought our day would start at 4am but the nervous Nelly’s decided that we should leave Friday night so that we don’t have to worry about traffic, leaving late or accidents on the road that would make us late. I love traveling with the girls that think our luggage is going to get lost and all the glass half empty stuff. They are a pleasure. I told them I’m gonna change their thinking and work on thinking positive. Anyway, we headed out just after 11pm. Don’t tell my mom. She will be mad. I will say there aren’t many folks on the interstate this late at night. We did find one or two that are might need a little visit from the county Sherriff. Holy intoxicated, sleepy or just plain bad drivers. Busy Bee ... read more

Next stop Germany - Meet the ladies Trying to write this introductory blog has been a little challenging. All of my two followers are probably thinking where did I pick Lori, Kim and Mandy up from. Well, actually high school. In high school I wasn’t as exciting as I am now. I knew a lot of folks superficially but I really only had one super close friend (Karen). I ran cross country with a wonderful group of folks, played golf with some super nice girls and attended an occasional field party but my close friendships came in college or after high school. Don’t get me wrong, I loved my high school career and enjoy all the friends I’ve made. I wouldn’t change that experience for the world. Lori So about five years ago I walked into ... read more

When we went on our trip to New York State and Niagara Falls, Canada we did not realize how many wineries we would visit and the amount of wine we would have accumulated during that time. As we started to buy more and more wine we decided it would be a great idea to share these bottles with some of my girlfriends. So the time had come and it was time to share some vino with my girlfriends. I wanted it to be a nice intimate experience with just a few friends and some good food to share. For this wine tasting I decided to create a few cheese boards. I do not know too much about pairing wines with cheeses so I asked 319 Wine and Cheese for guidance. 319 Wine and Cheese(http://www.319wineandcheese.com/) If you ... read more

Packing up, ISB Concert, Buffalo and Canada This morning started at 7am. That has been our earliest start time yet. We had a big day ahead of us. We had Kirby's concert, we needed to go return the rental car and pick up the new rental car and then head to Canada. International Society of Bassists - Youth Concert From 8:30am to 10am they had a college showcase so we got to the campus right at 8:30am. We visited a few college tables and ended up at the University of Alabama table. We talked to Mr. Crofut again and agreed to catch up in September. Most of the Alabama staff travels during the summer so it would be best to catch up once school gets back in. We all shook hands and we went to look ... read more

Today was our last full day in Ithaca so we needed to wrap up a few things and get ready to leave. It was a bittersweet feeling. I didn't want to think about leaving but I knew we had to face the facts and get to moving. Ithaca Falls Kirby's lunch break was 2 hours again so we picked him up and we headed out to eat lunch at Ithaca Falls. Ithaca Falls is right on the edge of Cornell's campus. As we drive through campus we saw markers for 40th, 45th and 50th reunion meeting places. Seemed they had a lot going on this weekend at the university. You go down a hill and kind of curve to the right. If you aren't looking you will pass the parking area. It doesn't seem to be ... read more
