Our mornings are pretty routine now. Jeff and I decided when we get back home we are getting rid of everything and we are just going to live a minimal lifestyle. Not really but it sure is easier to clean up a house when you don't have paperwork here and there, this to put away and that to put away. Anyway, we are having a great time exploring Ithaca and today we are going to conquer Buttermilk Falls, take Timmy to a dairy farm and check out one more winery before we pick Kirby up from camp. We could totally get used to this type of routine. Buttermilk Falls Buttermilk Falls We were going to figure out this park if it took us all day! We were determined. As I get to know the apartment I notice a few things. In our house there are vents in the ceiling where the air conditioner blows the air out and the hum of the air conditioner turning on and off. There isn't an air conditioner in the apartment and there are not any vents in the ceiling or floor. There are vents that line the baseboard. Apparently those are called baseboard heaters and is the most efficient way to heat a house in the winter. Who knew! Me and technology are not getting along this morning. I have three SD cards for my camera but for some reason two of them are now 'damaged'. That means I had to reformat both of the SD cards which means I lost a lot of the pictures I took ... read more

We woke up a little earlier today because Kirby started the Youth Program at the International Society of Double Basses Conference at Ithaca College today. We thought the television worked itself out but it went back to the 6 minutes on and about 10 minutes off. I know #firstworldproblems but it's just really annoying. Long story short, the owners of the apartment called LG and it turns out there is a faulty part. The owners decided to replace to tv so that we could all move along. Works for us! Yeah!! ISB - Youth Bassist Program We did not bring Kirby's bass. We rented his bass for the week from a company that brought them onsite. We picked the bass up yesterday and put it in the gym where the Young Bassist Program would be meeting ... read more

Today was probably one of the slower days that we have had since last Thursday. We woke up and just piddled through the morning. The next thing we know it is Noon so we figured we should go exploring before the rain settled in. We found out from the waiter at the Mexican place last night that Ithaca has 4 seasons. They are: winter, still winter, almost out of winter and construction season. This week the temperatures are supposed to be lows in the high 40's and highs in the low 70's. I'm not complaining. We packed clothes for this type of weather. Well, all except Timmy. He's the one that wears shorts year round. We woke up about 8am to start our day of packing and driving to Ithaca, New York. We enjoyed the apartment in New York. It was not 5 star accommodations but it was the place we needed for this tip. The location in Times Square was fantastic, the beds were comfortable and the apartment was neat and clean. The drawbacks were how many stairs we had to walk up, the painting of the stairwells, I didn't like the kitchen and the apartment could have used a few touchups to make it look a little more inviting. Super Shuttle Yesterday as we were waiting for the Statue of Liberty boat to return us to Battery Park I made our reservations with the Super Shuttle. It was so easy. I just went online, ordered the type of van ... read more

We all slept well again and we woke up with a little more pep in our step. We started the day off with a timed ticket to the Statue of Liberty so we had to hit the ground running. Step one was finding the right Subway to take to Battery Park. I have a Subway map that really helps out but in some cases it was hard to figure out exactly where you were on the map. The good news is that our apartment was right around a bunch of Subway stops so getting the right one was pretty convenient. Riding the subway is always fun for us. This one was packed so we had to stand most of the way. No big deal. I think it was about a 15 minute ride from Times Square ... read more

NYC sounds and sites - Top of Rock, Museum, Central Park and Wax Museum How did we sleep the first night in the apartment? Well we all passed out. Timmy passed out in the weirdest position. There is a little couch in the master bedroom/living room and he was kneeling with his head on the couch. He was out! Jeff had to move him to the bed. Kirby of course was gone and slept in his clothes. Jeff and I are sleeping in the bed that is closest to the street. We were lulled to sleep by the sounds of cars honking, ambulance sirens, police sirens and the hum of the backup beeper on a delivery truck. I really didn't care. After I hit my heads hit the pillow I was gone. The apartment only has ... read more

Welcome to New York City!! This is where theory meets reality. The theory of New York City I have been working on for six months on and off. So here's how the story of today goes...it's a long one but it's a funny one! Super Shuttle I looked around at other shuttle services but for some reason I kept coming back to the SuperShuttle. No real reason. All the services were basically the same rate and had the same type of car options. When our plane landed I received a text message from the SuperShuttle service with instructions on how to check in so after we got our baggage I went through the online check in process. It was real simple. I followed a link they texted me and then in received a confirmation text back. ... read more

Planning, packing, animals and we are on our way!!! A couple of you guys might have followed my last blog (www.mytb.org/starlingsacrossthepond) and I was pleased with it but maaaan it was a commitment! The main reason I start, continued and completed the blog was because it was just an amazing once in a lifetime trip and I really wanted to share it with folks. I have to say that as much of a task as it was it was very well received, grammar errors, incorrect spelling and maybe in incorrect fact or two (whatevs - I gave it a good effort). So, here I am, attempting to document another two week Starling adventure. This trip has taken us almost six months to plan so here's the rundown. We will begin in New York, New York then ... read more

Hey everybody! It's that time again. Girls road trip 2017!!! Whoop, whoop! This year we are going to St. Augustine, Florida. It is the perfect spot because it is almost the same distance from Tallahassee and Wellington (where Heather lives). AS I have done in the past, let me introduce the ladies to ya! This year we have Heather, Kay and Del. I have previously introduced you to Heather and Del in the Savannah post (https://www.travelblog.org/North-America/United-States/Florida/Tallahassee/blog-907438.html) so I will try to tell you a little bit more about them in this post. Heather It is just so hard to believe that Heather and I have known each other for over 20 years (we are creeping up on 25 actually). We met in college and even though we haven't lived in the same city since 1994... read more
