day 12, contiki day 6 bags to coach 7.45 am depart 8am Today we travel from Cortez to Albuquerque, a long drive. however we have one very fun stop on the way. SNOW MOBILING. About an hour drive and we arrived at Durango Colorado, a small quant town. Another half hour drive and we arrived at the snow lodge. We were in the 2nd group of people to go so we had almost 2 hours to have breakfast and have a play in the snow before we had to leave. We all headed to starbucks for coffee and breakfast. Then Willy, our driver invited everyone outside for a friendly snow ball fight whick quickly became not so friendly. We all ganged up on Willy but he got his revenge on us all. It also ended on ... read more

Now it turned out to be quite a long drive from Tempe into New Mexico, so we stopped right on the AZ/NM border town of Gallup. We were later informed that it would have behooved us to continue on through, as Gallup is pretty much sketchy. Ain’t that the truf. We checked into our Value Inn or something else scary, hiding Abigail in the backseat under a blanket so we could get the 2 person rate. The woman behind the counter was incredibly confused as to why Mr. Rob and I wanted a two person room with two beds. She must have offered us a king room about 100 times, to no avail. After we snuck B’Gail into the room and settled, I ran to the store to grab some soups. Good news bears: we had ... read more

We started our day out by going out for a power walk around the residential area. Great exercise, but not very exciting neighborhoods. We are in the Historical District....which of course means old. The weather was fabulous all day. A coolness in the morning, but we were able to wear t-shirts for our walk. We have heard that it is an unseasonably warm fall. It was mid-70's again. We headed out to the historical district which was five minutes from our hotel. There was a small park in the center and a church. Unfortunately most of this part of town is very touristy. Lots of what we call tacky tourist stores with lots of high priced turquoise that is very commercial. We walked the area long enough to enjoy the local architecture and a bit of ... read more

It's time to leave the Canyon but we have one last stop at the Desert View Watchtower. This, too, was designed by Sweetie's new obsession - Mary Elizabeth Jane Coulter. We both agree if you had limited time to see the Canyon, this would be the place to do it! Aside from the magnificent Watchtower, the view encompasses the Canyon and the Colorado River and of course, is Breathtaking! There are views all the way along this route (25 miles from Canyon to Desert View) so again, a great way to see the beauty. And we're off!!! Today, we are seeing some of Route 66 - the argument is over how much kitsch can Sweetie get Asshole to endure before he locks her out of the car. She refuses to sleep in the car on this ... read more

Rode from Flagstaff, Arizona to Albuquerque, New Mexico, via the Petrified Forest National Park. Got to Motel around 4:30 and went to a friends house for a delicious home-cooked dinner while Rick & Bill relaxed at the motel. Going to Shamrock, Texas, today and expect to be home next Tuesday. There is not going to be much to share in this blog. We try and go to New Mexico (Albuquerque more specifically) once a year to visit family and friends. Besides visiting family and friends there is not much time for anything else. Visits consist of home cooked meals, visiting grandma in Sile (see previous blog), and visiting friends over a cup of coffee, lunch, or dinner. So all I have is a couple places to eat at. At the very top of the list is Frontier. This is a college dive with awesome New Mexico food. Our personal favorites are the sweet roll (a very soft cinnamon roll soaked in butter - yes it is that awesome), the breakfast burrito and a fresh squeezed cup of orange juice. You will be lucky if the entire ... read more

Geo: 35.0841, -106.649First flight from ABQ to ORD was delayed because of "mechanical" problems. One of the on-board computers was not functioning correctly. It caused an hour and a half delay leaving Albuquerque. We had a scheduled two-hour layover in Chicago, but still missed the connection. We had to wait in the penalty box on the tarmac in Chicago for about twenty minutes before our plane could get to an open gate. When we deplaned, we saw on the departures screen that our flight was closed, but it was still listed on the screen so we hurried in that direction just in case they would let us on. However, before we got to the gate, our flight disappeared from the listing. United rebooked us on a Lufthansa flight that was leaving about four hours later. I ... read more

We took a much needed day of rest today. The weather was hot and many places were closed for the holiday. We slept in and went to see a movie (Brave) in the morning. On the way to the movie we had to check out the world famous Alburquerque Holiday Inn (where the towels are oh so fluffy*). We made some friends with the people in the sites next to us and we all planned to see the fireworks at the balloon grounds later that night. As we were doing laundry, swimming and generally relaxing that afternoon, the dark clouds started to move in. By the time Michelle and Anne had cleaned up from thier swim, the wind had picked up and the weather alert station automatically turned on in the trailer. A major thunderstorm with ... read more

Today we actually made it out very early, drove 5 hours round trip through the Navajo nation to Four Corners (where we spent 30 minutes), took some fun pictures, browsed some native crafts, and Tony took a nice nap on the way back (and the way there). The scenery in the Navajo reservation is fantastic. There is a giant lava mountain in the middle of a big valley that is 2500 feet tall (basically, the throat of an extinct volcano, eroded around)... called Shiprock since it kind of looks like an old clipper ship if you squint right. After a quick trailer hookup and packing (during which time Michelle played and ran around), we headed off towards Albuquerque. We stopped at the Continental Divide, then took a neat drive on Route 66 for a short while. ... read more
