After three very pleasant days in and around Santa Fe and three lovely nights at the El Rey Inn it was time to get back on the road and head for Albuquerque. Since we arrived in Santa Fe I have been saying to Bernie that I read something about an Emerald Trail that we should do in/around Santa Fe or Albuquerque, but I couldn't find the references in our guide books again and searching for 'Emerald Trail' on Google was unsuccessful. The El Rey was on Cerrillos Road (Historic Route 66) which became NM Highway 14 as it headed out of town. Well, it turns out that NM Highway 14 is the 'Turquoise Trail Scenic Byway'!! D'oh - I had remembered it as more green than greenish-blue. So we drove to Albuquerque by way of the ... read more

Day 36: Flagstaff, AZ to Cedar Crest, NM Since Charlie & Kerry have already visited the two parks we planned to see today, we left separately - - we were both going to go east on I-40, but the Hixsons took a detour on NM 602 and NM 53 to visit El Morro NM and El Malpais NM. El Morro was really interesting. It is a large sandstone rock in the high desert (elev around 6200 ft) that has been a landmark for travelers since 1637 !!!! It has a small pool at its base that catches snow melt and rain water and hold something over 200,000 gallons and has not run dry in recorded history - - it is NOT a spring. There are lots of inscriptions on the rock, the oldest one having been ... read more

Hello from Albuquerque New Mexico!! Sorry but I don't have any photo's today. We left Phoenix this morning about 9:00 am and arrived in Albuquerque at about 5:00 pm Phoenix time, 6:00 pm New Mexico time. Lot of highway repair going on especially on I-40 both in Arizona and in New Mexico which slowed us down a bit. Ran into rain about an hour out of Albuquerque. It rained just enough to cool things off and to help clean the bugs off the windshield. Tomorrow we drive to Elk City Oklahoma which is just across the Oklahoma state line from the Texas panhandle. Peace out!!... read more

I know for most people reading this blog, you'll think to yourself that we took the day off only riding from Santa Fe to Albuquerque, but it was a busy day. We got up this morning and started at the Santa Fe National Cemetery to visit dad's father's gravesite. We looked up the location and headed over to the site, spending a little time there and taking a couple of photos. Our initial plan was to head straight down to Albuquerque, see his father's house, visit Old Town, and then continue west towards Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon. We started chatting with one of the maintenance employees at the cemetary about our trip, and he mentioned that we should do a loop north towards Taos and see the Rio Grande Gorge, so north we went. It ... read more

11:55 9 March 2012 I am sitting in a chair at the Albuquerque Sunport. I have about 10 minutes until my flight boards. The magazine vendor in front of me is trying to engage anyone he can in discussion about where Manning will end up playing. I will eventually have to buy a water from him. I may or may not break it to him: Houston I am sitting here because my flight gate was too crowded. There seems to be a large group going from Albuquerque to Israel. I will be there in time- there are other things to do first.... read more

Today was to be another driving day. I woke up around 6.45 to hit some breakfast. Nothing really much on offer so I had some Frosted Flakes. They are just overly sweet Corn Flakes, so not very good. Once we hit the road our first stop was at Durango to have our group picture taken. We all had to huddle together in the snow so it was pretty funny, but the backdrop is a really nice mountain, so the picture came out really good. Next we had a short drive to our jeeping start point. They werent Jeeps as much as huge Hummers, which was cool, but it also meant that it was pretty boring since the Hummers took on the terrain so well. We made our own fun in the back of our Hummer, just ... read more

This year our Thanksgiving will be celebrated in Albuquerque. This will be our last day here and we have enjoyed our visit very much. Alb. is a busy growing city with much to offer. We started our day with a drive through a deserted (remember..Thanksgiving) downtown to Old Town. Many of the downtown buildings have murals painted on them representing some important aspect of the area. Old Town was fun to walk around because most tourists were gone to "grandma's house" and that made for an uncrowded walk-around. We then went out and found a place we could walk across and along the Rio Grande River. By then we were ready for our TG meal at the Golden Corral (with the rest of Albuquerque!).....lots and lots of food...TOO MUCH FOOD.... read more

We had researched and planned for this day outing before we left home. Albuquerque has what they call a Bio Park. It is a combination of a very nice zoo, an aquarium complex, and a botanical garden. These are stretched along the Rio Grande River for about 2 miles. They also have a people moving train that can transport you from one part of the park to another. We spent the whole day there, with the majority of the time at the zoo. But we did take the train over to the aquarium and gardens in the afternoon. The people in Albuquerque can be very proud of the Bio Park. It is a first class, fun, and educational place to visit. Make sure you put it on your list to see!... read more

After spending the night at Gallup, NM, we traveled on to Albuquerque for a 3 day Thanksgiving rest. Upon arrival and moving in to our motel, I left for an afternoon visiting the National Nuclear Museum located there. The museum is only a very few years old and is divided into 3 different sections: nuclear energy as a science, peaceful ways to use nuclear energy, and the history of nuclear energy, including wartime use. It was a very informative and educational afternoon and I would highly recommend anybody with a history or science interest to visit it.... read more
