Two days from now I will be arriving in Honduras. I can't believe the time is almost here! I have everything I need (I think) and my clothing is being pre-treated for protection against skeeters and buggies. Vaccinations are up-to-date, preventive medication picked up, and I have my travellers insurance. I would also like to give a HUGE THANK YOU to the following people who have helped to support my effort in raising money for Villa Soleada Elementary School and those who contributed to my trip. I have raised close to $600! Michelle and David Rothstein Art and Janyce Katz Randy and Cris Katz Bridget and Mike Baill Eileen and Mark Cramer Emily and Jeff Levi Priscilla Taylor Kim Stackhouse Laura North Alec Alterman Dino Gatsoulas Meghan Walter Andrea and Don Glasgow Donna Porwancher Rhona and ... read more

Things are finally starting to come together! I have almost everything I need for my trip, now just need to pack it all! My donation bag of school supplies is bursting at the seams, but I can't wait to give all of the markers, colored pencils, crayons, folders, etc to the kiddos in El Progreso. I also have a stack of letters that my 7th graders wrote to the children in Honduras. I have posted some pictures below.... read more

In one week I will be leaving for Duran, Ecuador (right outside of Guayaquil on the map). I will be living with a host familiy and volunteering in various clinics throughout the area. 3 other women medical students will be traveling with me. At this point, just about a week before I depart for Ecuador, I am feeling a bit overwhelmed that I’m not quite sure what to expect from this experience. Of course I have read the Physicians for Humanity Orientation Guide 10+ times and asked the MSIIs various questions. I have done internet research and read books, but the anxiety of not being able to fully prepare myself is still unnerving. On the positive end, I can’t wait to meet my host family. I can only imagine how nice and accommodating these families must ... read more

We are sitting in Newark airport waiting for our flight to Stockholm. There is a group of college age students sitting near us passing around the guitar and playing. Maybe we will meet them again in a hostel somewhere. The teenage girl talking to Alicia, Annika, and Kjerstin is dressed in red white and blue and said she just went to high school in Indianapolis and is going back home to Germany. The older couple behind us is from Germany living in Hilton Head SC and going back to Germany for visit. A bird just flew by us and I heard a young boy tell his dad "No really! It was a real bird!" The cultural adventure begins and we haven't even left the States yet WHAT??!! We are boarding in 10 minutes and I just ... read more

Once more there was another early start, but having just about turned my alarm off, I almost missed the very reason why it had gone off so early. A few minutes before it was due, I hurriedly put on some shoes and along with Mark, sprinted to the back of the Park where the Lake begins. The sun was about to make its appearance - on our very last day of the Trailblazer tour. As we arrived at the edge, any of the others who got up as well were nowhere to be seen. Then Mark decided to walk along the edge towards the sun, to get a much better view, and this was where we discovered just how big this Park was, as we passed through many small sections of field, surrounded by big hedges, ... read more

May 1: Today I drove to the NJ outer island on which the great Atlantic City is located. Ever since I began my travels, this place has been on my list of places I really wanted to visit. The City of the game of Monopoly, the Boardwalk, salt water taffy and the Miss America Beauty Contest. When I was young, this was the city to rival Las Vegas. It was the Gambling Capital of the East Coast. Legend has it that the candy originated here in 1883 when hurricane waters flooded many of the beachfront stores including a taffy factory. The candy maker thought his candy was ruined, but when he gave some away, it proved to be a big hit instead of a loss. The salt had added an unusual flavor. As to Monopoly—I wonder ... read more

Monday 21st of May What the hell happened last night?Where am I? And why am I not hung over? All are questions I asked myself at 7 am when Michael prodded me to wake up I was sat sleeping on a large armchair that I didn't recognise. We had gone back to the barman's house and carried on drinking with him his boyfriend and there friend into the early hours of the morning. We went to sleep at around 5am, we had only had two hours sleep. The reason I had no hangover was because I was still extremely drunk I had only payed for one drink all night and we where constantly being supplied alcohol as if on a saline drip. Our accents had made us very popular the barman brought us both out multiple ... read more

Atlantic city Sunday 20th may After a bit of a failed party night but a successful night in the casino for me we decided to do a bit of research for tonight on where to go and what to do. Last night we had a go in the casino in which I won $85 but rich lost $40. These casinos were incredible. Largest, fanciest, loudest and highest stakes I had seen ever. It makes me even more excited to hit Vegas in a month or so. Due to essentially paying for two lots of pricey hotels in atlantic city we decided to recoup this money on food. There was a free breakfast at the motel/hotel which consisted of mini bagels with cottage cheese and coffee. Great selection. So we filled up on them, had a coffee ... read more
