Slept in probably a little too long this morning, then left from my parents' home on the long road to Nebraska. It was a really overcast, humid day, which unfortunately didn't make for the best scenery to look at. Spotty rain all the way west. Again, not a whole lot to report, just powering through the long drive on the way back. Again though, lots of time to think and reflect. I *love* driving for that reason!... read more

This morning I spent the last 4 hours of my life at my perfectly...um, interesting...ex-job! I had thought about leaving for so long, and I had long pictured in my mind just what exactly that moment would be like when I left the building and drove home for the last time. And now, quite honestly, I can't even remember how any of it happened. So I'm taking off to wherever the open road takes me. I feel the call within me to explore, to reach out beyond my little world. Well, that's part of it - mostly I just have to GO. May the road rise up to meet me, the fields be green, the wind at my back. All that. The only place I know I'll want to be for sure is Boston. We'll see ... read more

April 3 Woke up in Mexico, had breakfast in Paris, and lunch in Oregon. All in the space of 8 hours. Where in the world am I? More beautiful fields of the lovely purple blossoms. I had thought maybe they were clover. Maria stopped and picked one so we could ask. A local told me they are called henbit, and have increased tremendously recently since more farmers have gone to “non-till” farming methods. I presume this means no plowing or less plowing. Like many things, beauty is a matter of perspective. The farmers, he said, hate the stuff. Elk farms, lots of waterfowl (pelicans in Missouri ?) at Long Branch and Pershing State Parks, and creeks with such descriptive names - Otter Creek, Crooked Creek, Salt Creek, Elk Branch, Muddy Creek . . . . Chillicothe ... read more

We got to see a high school football game last Friday night (10/21) in Cedar Rapids, IA. It was C.R. Prairie at Xavier & we rooted for the visiting team since we met a nice couple in the parking lot who were there to watch their grandson on the Prairie team. Those farm boys sure are big!! Prairie ran away with the game 28-7. Afterwards, we went to the Frightmare Forest, which was in the woods behind Xavier H.S. The H.S. drama club put this together - it was pretty good (both Ken & I got spooked a couple of times). On Saturday(10/22), we shot across the middle of Iowa on Rte. 30 - a really pretty country drive - to get to Council Bluffs, IA which sits on the Missouri River, right across from Omaha, ... read more
