Ni hao! (Chinese for "hello!") Well, here is the new location of my travel blog to China. I will be leaving next week for almost 7 weeks in China, primarily in Dalian and Beijing, with a few little stops along the way. I am going to keep this post short so I can see how this looks, and if you want to subscribe to my blog then you will get updates whenever I add a post. Or, if you don't want to subscribe just check back now and then and I will try to keep everyone informed as to what I learn on my trip to China. Here is a cool article about tourism in China, too. Thanks everyone, and Zai Jian! Bill Conrad... read more

What a dust bowl. I was assured by my guide at our facility that the whole state wasn't like that, but I really didn't want to hang around long enough to find out. I finished my work at about 2:30 and one of the guys encouraged me to leave, lest I drive into the snow storm that's planning on dumpng up to 12" of snow in the Denver area tonight and into tomorrow. Ooo! Maybe this means aNOTHER flight delay! Or maybe even a cancellation! Can I really be so lucky??? So I left and stayed awake long enough to find my way back to Denver and check in at the hotel. I'm off to find food and take a long, restful sleep. Criminy, let's wrap this sojourn up, already. Oh, I asked about closing ... read more

I've returned. I was at the factory working today listening to the radio (and obviously playing with wires). The song I live in a land down under by men at work came on and i cried for a little bit. I'm nostalgic for my land down under.... read more

I woke yesterday at around 8am and set out for a small village in eastern Nebraska called Unadilla. I was in search of a rural cemetery that had the tombstones of some relatives. I stopped at at the only open place, aside from the farmers co-op, a convenience store that smelled of stale popcorn and cigarettes. I grabbed a Coke and asked the lady behind the counter, the only other person around, if she knew of any other cemeteries other than the one west of the village. She gave me a strange look and quickly said,"no". I paid for my Coke and stepped out to my car. I looked at my licence plate bracket and realized that the "Mutation Research Technology" logo had probably freaked her out a bit. I had this image of her imagining ... read more

I woke a little late yesterday morning so I didn't leave Minneapolis untill around 10:30. With a few random stops, that put me in western Iowa about 5pm. Most of the trip was cloudy and misty but as I pulled into Omaha, the sun came out giving me enough light for some pictures at the Danish Cemetery in Davey, Nebraska. I ran around the cemetery, racing the sun, snapping as many pictures as I could of family members. Leaving the cemetery, satisfied that I had at least a few leads on my geneology, I drove to Lincoln to a coffee shop in the Haymarket called 'The Mill' to get some coffee and use their wi-fi. After only a few minutes with my photos and my geneology program I was making some pretty good headway. The plan ... read more

We are alive and well! We are sitting in a campground outside Bodega Bay CA. Sorry we did not get out blogs going. But we are having too much fun and seeing too much beauty, please keep tuned and we’ll catch up. We left Pittsburgh on September 26, 2006 and traveled West on Route #80 averaging 500+ miles per day. Our First night was in Illinois, at Illini State Park, we even had time to take a walk along the Illinois River before it got too dark, the state park was great with a full hook-ups. Day two was to Grand Island, Nebraska. We stayed at a KOA in a cornfield, again we had time for a walk, a half hour out and, of course, a half hour back. During the day we try to ... read more

Well… Here we are sitting (or in Carl’s case lying) in the back of the pickup somewhere in Chadron State Park south of Chadron, Nebraska. Tonight was our test drive of the “turck camping” experience… I.e., take everything (including the bikes) out of the back of the truck and put it into the front of the truck - except for the camping gear… Quite a puzzle… and tonight we cheated by “storing” some of the stuff beneath the truck! All-in-all it is doable… just takes time - and to think that tonight we did it in the dark!! So what happened today? Statistics Starting Destination: Kearney, Nebraska Ending Destination: Chadron State Park, Nebraska Miles Driven: 400 Backtrack Miles Driven: 9 Yes, dear readers we made the mistake of following the bill-board rather than the map and ... read more

To those we leave behind... Yes, it is finally here.... The day we start the "fun" segment of The Odyssey. The day started off slow, finalizing the packing of the truck, thinking of those few things that we were sure we had forgotten and then confirming that we hadn't forgotten them, making final adjustments to the dog pen and packing the food - complete with fresh tomato's from Carl's dad's garden and freshly boiled eggs! Final goodbyes were made, albeit telepathically to Dawson (left) as we thought that might help him acclimatize... Then we were off!... Well not quite - we had a quick stop at FedEx in Manhattan, KS to collect the locking skewers for the bike racks and then the mini-storage to cover our stuff with plastic... Somehow we could hardly believe that ... read more

The second day and third, I went tru what I call, the 800 miles dead zone; no digial cell phone signal! hehehehe... Any way, I got to see land that I have not seen for over 4 years. I forgot how tough is to live in Wyoming and Nebraska. These are lands of real cowboys. You have to be one to survive the winters here! hehehehe... Most cities in this area of the country are wide apart in distance, like 100 miles in between. For instance, Wyoming is 401 miles on I-80 and Nebraska is 458 give or take one mile. Of course, the "dead zone" really starts in Utah on the canyon of I-84... So is really about 900 miles!!! hehehehe... Well, lets see what Iowa has in store for me tomorrow! Good night to ... read more
