Today was a nice day off, if only the construction workers hadn’t started working at 7 a.m. I’m glad I have been training for it for years- sleeping during construction, that is. Once I woke up, I did some reading and worked on a few projects, then Victor, Dana and I went to do errands. We needed to hit a hardware store, and later found a gift shop with ROOMS full of cards- I was in heaven! Victor needed to go to Wal-mart, but it ended up that they couldn’t help him, so he had to call someone else. He was wandering around on the phone while Dana shopped. Now, in Spokane, it would be much easier to spot him in a store, but in the South, wow, not so easy. When we got back, I ... read more

My alarm went off sometime around the butt crack of dawn. We had to leave at 6:45, so getting showered and things had to happen earlier. Load in went really well- this union house is a lot like home; everyone’s competent and pretty well enjoys what they do, or at leave have fun with it. I knew it would be a good day when Kyle gave a hug to Sarah, and then Dana, and then one of the locals got in line, an old man. The whole crew was great to work with. Since we were only about a block from the hotel, I got to go back to my room for a nap before the matinee show. Sarah’s grandfather and a friend of his drove up to see the show, so they went to lunch ... read more

It’s Valentine’s Day. Weeks ago, Sarah showed me a card she had purchased for Kyle for this very day. It’s a boy sitting with a huge grin on his face, and a girl on either side of him kissing his cheeks. Below is a quote from Mae West: Too much of a good thing can be wonderful! When a day starts off with something like this, how can it not be great? He and I also sat at breakfast and watched non-regular-hotel-guests try to figure out how to make waffles. Quite entertaining. Did I mention it was torrential downpour outside? I think the last time I saw it rain that hard was in Kentucky last March as we were about an hour ahead of some major tornadoes! We could barely hear each other talk in the ... read more

Decisions Delay Travel Too many decisions!!! Which route? Where should we plan to stop along the way? What places are worth going out of the way to see? What should I pack? Which vehicle is best to drive? Should I take the cat and the dog or just the dog? What should I do with my other cats? What places will the children really like? Should I really go? I don't know. I do know that I am determined not to let doubt interfere with my decision to go. I may have to start flipping a coin every time a decision has to be made.... read more

I started this post just over a week ago when we were still in Mississippi but only had the chance to finish and publish it now that we're in Austin, Texas. Howdy ya'll, it's been a while since our last post because we have been busy exploring Florida and cruising from one state to the next taking in civil rights, civil wars and several chain motels! M has done lots and lots of driving (and moaning about doing so - F. Like she never does! - M) and to make you all feel better, it's colder now that we've left south Florida and it's back to wearing my cardi and PJ's in bed (yes I know we're mad to leave the sunshine of Miami but we were bored of beaches!). After leaving Miami we headed further ... read more

After a very pleasant 3 and 1/2wks. in Florida,I headed West.Somewhere in Alabama, while on the interstate, the RV,which has been running perfectly, just suddenly quit running, like someone flipped a switch. It would turn over but not a hint of starting.Fluids, wires, hoses all seemed OK.So I made the call for a tow truck. While waiting for it,I took off the air filter and pumped the throttle. No gas came out of the jets,so I wondered about not having fuel, despite the gauge showing about an 1/8 tank remaining.Of courses the huge wrecker didn't have any, so we called his buddy to bring some out. After putting 5 gallons in the tank, she started right up.It was an expensive lesson about the calibration of the fuel gauge. But fortunately nothing more serious. So after losing several hrs. and $,I continued on to Mississippi.... read more

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Traditionally, our family including me, ALWAYS has the Ham, Black Eyed Peas, Cabbage and Coleslaw for New Year's Day. This was the first New Year I deviated from the norm. However, we were fortunate enough to be able to escape for 4 days over the New Year weekend. We packed up Woody, our dog, and left about 11:00 AM on New Year's Day and headed east toward Mississippi. Even though the Natchez Trace Parkway is one of our favorite trips in Mississippi, we rarely travel east on I-10 much anymore. Since we are in Louisiana, east only gets us to Mississippi, Alabama or Florida, unless of course we head north from either of those states. We have done those states to death. However, Mississippi has the greatest State Parks so Randy was thrilled ... read more
