First day of work! Woke up a little after 6, which was only annoying because I kept waking up throughout the night. Probably too excited/nervous. Haha. Anyway, got up, had breakfast with Ingrid and then we headed over to the headquarters at 7. Basically just had orientation today, which was actually nice. Although I loved Nevada I was kinda jealous of the fact that I never got an orientation, while the interns after me did. So yeah. Lauren and Scott gave us some paperwork and then Lauren told us a bit about the job and gave us a tour of the headquarters area and in and around the fire center. Got to meet many of the other people on site, who all seem nice. It was kind of an overload of information, but Lauren was away ... read more

Well hello again everyone! Time for a brand new blog to begin!! :) This time, this is coming to ya'll from Mississippi! Here goes. Tuesday afternoon mom and I started our road trip and we made it down to the refuge by 3pm on Thursday! The drive was lots of fun... many laughs. :) And bring able to alternate drivers every few hours was a big help. On Tuesday we drove through 5 states (NJ, PA, MD, WV, VA), wednesday we went through 4 states (VA, TN, GA, AL), and Thursday we were only in 2 states (AL and MS)! We were amused because at one point we had a bathroom stop in Trenton... georgia. lol. See, it takes very little to amuse us. Anyway, that Trenton was much prettier than ours. Thursday we stopped by ... read more

Looking at the map it was astonishing how far we had gotten. In one day we had made our way from Washington to The Great Smokey Mountains. We drove through New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Tennessee so far. It was a beautiful drive! At 10 pm we drove off the Interstate and found a cozy, cheap motel, Super8. The receptionist, a young spotty guy, was completely drunk. Maybe that's why the room was cheap. Internet at last! We uploaded as much as we could and wrote an email or two, then it was off to bed. It hadn't snowed! And we had blue skies and sunshine again, haha! Fresh waffles with sirup. At breakfast we were obviously the European weirdos! We forgot to pray...OMG :) I guess we'll be getting more ... read more

Okay, we are 3/4 of the way there....We have driven 1, 324 miles since leaving the island....Last night was the worst driving...We spent some time in Chattanooga TN to go to the aquarium there. Cameron was BEGGING me to go and I couldn't deny the poor child. It was totally amazing!! The exhibits were awesome, we touched stingrays, sturgeon and other creatures in special tanks. We even had stingrays eating out of our hands....We were covered in butterflies in the butterfly garden and saw some awesome jellyfish. Though we rushed through the place, we could have easily spent several hours there alone. We also squeezed in some time to take the FREE shuttle to the Chattanooga Choo Choo for a photo op. before we left. That town is so friendly and clean...It seems to be a ... read more

Oct 25 Day 8 237 miles down,413 to go Rick’s detailed description of a typical day on the water onboard Amber Lee II: We woke at 6:00 am. Rick put on the coffee and Wayne put in load of laundry with hopes that it would be done by 8:30 am departure time. We discussed the days plan over coffee. It was very foggy which made a question, will we be able to see by 8:30 am? We had our breakfast which consisted of a bowl of cereal and banana. After breakfast I folded the laundry, got ice from the ship store, paid the slip bill and fuel charges. Wayne cleaned up the galley and did misc. to prepare for departure. Wayne warmed up the diesel, I took care of dock lines as we prepared to depart. ... read more

Oct 21 Day 4 on the water We woke up to another cool crisp day. We planned on leaving early, but were enticed to stay for complementary fresh warm cinnamon rolls. Glad we did, for they were delicious. We fueled up with 3 gals diesel and pumped out the holding tank and headed out on the river. We managed to sail for about 1 hour, but with light winds from the south we motored most of the day. We crossed under Interstate 40 around noon. We are basically out of Kentucky Lake now. It looks like a wide river at this point. The river depth is 40-60 feet deep. Later in the day we motored through a gorge with high rock cliffs. Arrived at our first anchorage, Lick Creek, at 5:30 pm., about 200 yards of ... read more
