We started our day of touring by going to the Emerald Mound, a Native American temple mound built by the Natchez and used from about 1250 to 1600. The mounds were used for ceremonies and sometimes the chief lived on top. Some local mounds were being used when Europeans came and they observed some of the ceremonies, including human sacrifices at the funerals of high ranking people. The mound was built by people carrying baskets of dirt until it was 770 feet long by 435 feet wide and 35 feet tall! It was flat on top, except for a few mounds built on top for platforms for buildings. There wasn't much to look at now, but it must have been something in its day! Next we drove to the Springfield Plantation, but it had recently been ... read more

We spent a leisurely morning and left the RV park around 11:00. Jodie and Nancy spent a half hour on the phone going over the mail. We saw our first dead armadillo by the roadside. Will we ever see a live one? A highway sign for an upcoming rest area said, "Security Provided". We decided we didn't need to stop.We passed through Jackson, the state capital. According to the guidebook, it was nicknamed Chimneyville, after Sherman burned the town in July, 1863. There were beautiful, new interchanges in Jackson, but the highway was old, rough, and bouncy. We were sure everything in the trailer would have fallen out of the cupboards and be all jumbled up on the floor. Shortly after Jackson, we got onto the Natchez Trace Parkway. We just happened to have brought along ... read more

We decided we had to see the lion before we packed up and moved on. We drove over to the park and it was closed. It opens at 5:00, but only for the trainride through the lights. We drove down the park roads to see if we could see any cages and we did. We found an open gate on a service road. We didn't see any sign that said, "Keep Out", so we didn't. We wound around on the road down to the cages and saw llamas and goats and then we saw the LION! Nancy jumped out to take pictures. A park truck drove up next to Rich and asked if he was there to feed meat to the lion. Rich said, "No. I just came to see the lion." "Well, the park is ... read more

nov 18 Poplarville was cold last night, really cold, and to be honest rural Mississippi is loosing its charm, what with the dogs and the dry counties. The aca route goes way deep ito the countryside along farm roads which will no doubt have their share of four legged menaces. I decide that its time to once again abandon the route and head directly south to Gulfport only 40 miles south of here, the Gulf of Mexico wow! The chill northerthly winds assist my decision and I am soon whizzing along southwards at 15 plus mph. I have resarched a bit on google and know that there are various 'campgrounds' . The ride down to the Gulf of Mexico is brill , smooth roads , high average speed , pleasing forested scenery and no dogs. The ... read more

Nov 17 I am magnificently refreshed after a good nights sleep in the warm and dry motel and set off in very good spirits. My target today is Poplarville in Pearl River County, Mississippi. The road is reasonably good and there is hardly any wind so I jog along effortlessly and am nearly half way in no time. Of course thats when a flat comes along to bring you down to earth. On this occasion I am not bothered as the place it happens is a beautiful meadow with trees all around and I decide to do a bit of bike maintenence at the roadside, changing the rear tyre and lubing the chain. This done I go on to the half way mark, the town of Bogalusa, among the usual malls there is a gigantic Wallmart ... read more

Just wanted to add a few more thoughts/reflections on what has to be one of the most memorable weeks of my life. I can't speak for the team today because I'm no longer with them, but based on the comments throughout the week, I think many of us had similar feelings to all that we experienced. As I wrote yesterday's blog, all I could think is how do I ever put into words all that we experienced this week. I know I've kept you up on the factual stuff of the projects we did this week and the joy of seeing a foundation become a house, but it's been difficult to describe the feeling involved with it. The blisters, the scrapes, the sore joints--they all pale in comparison to the difference this is going to make ... read more

What a bittersweet day--the last day of the build. Even though I'm blogging this on Saturday at the Biloxi airport, I want to share our experiences on the job site on Friday and our last evening in Biloxi. It truly was a bittersweet day as we worked hard to achieve all we could. And that was a lot. We almost completed the nailing of the sheeting to the house--only about 20 nails left on one wall and about a quarter of the back wall. That was a lot of nails--especially on the last day when we ran out of the "good" nails--ones that we thought were better--to aluminum nails that caused many of us to pound three nails for every one that actually went into the wall. We learned the art of patience as we hammered. ... read more

Suggested Listening for this Entry: R.L. Burnside's CD Too Bad Jim. T-Model Ford's CDs Pee Wee Get Your Gun and Jack Daniel Time. Suggested Food and Drink for this Entry: A candy bar and a large soda from any country convienence store or gas station that is open late. You'll understand as you read further. After finding Red's, and without anything immediate to do, we got back in the SUV and headed north on highway 61. We thought four hours or so was a lot of time to kill doing nothing just to check out the Po' Monkey or Red's. Plus, the Po' Monkey was another 35 miles away from Memphis, which we planned on returning to that night. As we headed out of Clarksdale, it dawned on me there were several places in the area ... read more

Suggested Listening for this Entry: "Cross Road Blues" and "Hell Hound on My Tail" by Robert Johnson. "I Can't Be Satisfied", "Rolling Stone" and "Long Distance Call" by Muddy Waters. Suggested Food and Drink for this Entry: Surely, you're not tired of BBQ and beer yet? Prior to leaving D.C., Ips, the Player and I decided we were going to take a side trip from Memphis into the Mississippi Delta in search of blues, hopefully to be heard in a juke joint. For those of you who don't know what a juke joint is, I offer you Wikipedia's very scientific definition: Juke joint (or jook joint) is the vernacular term for an informal establishment featuring music, dancing, gambling, and drinking, primarily operated by African American people in the southeastern United States. The term "juke" is believed ... read more
