On my 39th birthday, Karen, Michael and I drove down Natchez Trace to Tupelo, Mississippi. In the 1800s, men walked up this trail after sailing flatboats down the Mississippi River. Along the Trace, we saw Indian Mounds and the burial site of Meriwether Lewis, the great trailblazer. Once in Tupelo, we visited Elvis Presley's birthplace. Natchez Trace is a project of the National Park Service and is kept free of commercialism. It makes for a pleasant drive. The trip reminded me of other excursions. The Land Between the Lakes is run by Tennessee Valley Authority. The two lakes are Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley, formed by the damming of the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers. Both rivers dump into the Ohio. Cairo, Illinois is where the Ohio meets the Mississippi. Down around this area, we saw an ... read more

This blog entry consists of two adventures. 1. The voyage of four Montreal students to New Orleans 2. Our group's first exposure to the destruction of Hurricane Katrina. 1. 5 of us left Montreal on route for New Orleans with a stop over in Washington. 1 of us made it on the connecting flight and was able to join the rest of the group on time in New Orleans. The other 4, including myself were not so lucky. We missed our connecting flight, for reasons I do not want to get into and had to fly through Charlotte, NC. In Charlotte, we met a group of Hawaiians who were on their way to New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl. We finally arrived in New Orleans and took a taxi to Kiln, Mississippi where our campsite was. ... read more

Well we woke up at about 8am and began opening presents at 9.30. We all had a lot of presents so much we were still opening them until 11.00. I got a whole load of clothes mainly t-shirts, Bonnie knitted me a pair of gloves, Audrey got me a pair of nice jeans and t-shirts. Luke bought me an official Johnny Cash pocket knife which is awesome and really sharp. Seth got me a Hoody from Bass Pro Shop which is a kind of outdoor superstore for all your redneck needs. We had dinner at 2 which was lovely! Bonnie made such a lovely meal, later on we played a game of poker with Luke's new poker set he got.... read more

Me and Audrey took to car on the 1 hour trip to North Park Mall in Jackson today and spent most of the day shopping in the Mall. We got mostly stocking fillers for Audrey's family and a few presents for Bonnie and Charles. After we got back we went over to Doug's hunting lodge. Charles' brother Mitch who is a lawyer and lives in Louisiana has rented out the entire lodge. We went over there at about 5 with all of Audrey's family, tomorrow night were having a big meal and loads of games. Me Seth and Luke played poker on the proper felt poker table he has. I took a load of pictures of the lodge, its really beautiful with heads of animals from Africa and America. The lodge now has a newly built ... read more

Me and Audrey got up early this morning and left the house at about 10am to go and do some christmas shopping. we spent most of the day at the mall and a shopping outlet called Dogwood. After being dragged around there for a good 5 hours we met up with Luke and went and got a tree. We went about 20 mile further than we had to but eventually got the one we wanted. We then headed back to Audrey's house and wrapped presents in Bonnie and Charles' room to help cheer Bonnie up who had been in bed all day because of her back problem.... read more

I (Danny) arrived last night at 11.15pm local time, which put me at 24 hours being awake and traveling for 20. My flight from Manchester to New Jesrsey was good i had alot of space. After seven and a half hours we flew past Manhatton and i saw the Empire state building and the Statute of Liberty which was surreal to actually see these things that you see so often on the TV right up close. I landed in New Jersey at about 2pm local time. I rechecked my baggaged and went through security again only to find that my flight had been delayed for 2 hours. So I found a quiet corner in the airport and read a book for roughly 4 hours. At 8.45pm we began to board, we then however had to ... read more

Well we survived the washing experience aided by a very nice Tennessee woman who not only showed us how to operate the beasts contained in room 101 but also gave us free detergent. I think she was somewhat fascinated by our accents, and overawed by our tour; but that’s not surprising seeing as she’d only been over the state line once. Last night we ignored the concierge’s recommendations to go to the Rendezvous but instead headed off to Gus’s Famous Hot & Spicy Fried Chicken Restaurant. Think ultra plump & juicy KFC with attitude and that might give you an idea; fiery and finger licking good for sure. We then headed back to Beale Street for our last night of Memphis blues, beers and whisky. Late this morning in bright sunshine (albeit bitterly cold) we headed ... read more

"Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." - Philippians 1:6 I am so happy. I love my job I love my temporary home I love my friends I love the food I love my life ...and it's all due to your prayers and support. God is everywhere in Biloxi and I feel all of your prayers on a daily basis and it is very comforting and powerful. Time is sparse around here hopefully I will be able to give you an update on what I am doing, and where, and how it is very soon. I just wanted to thank you all for your prayers and encourage you to keep praying because they are working and it is ... read more

What a fun day in Natchez, MS. I learned Natchez is the oldest settlement on the Mississippi River. It was the first capital of the Mississippi Territory and also the first capital of the State of Mississippi. I stayed in a very nice campground across the river in Vidalia, LA. My rig was 100 yards from the banks of the mighty Mississippi. I could hear the sounds of the ships’ horns from inside the rig! There is a nice walk along the bluff overlooking the river. I was ¾ of a mile from the bridge and could have walked or ridden a bicycle into Natchez (but I didn’t bring my bike this trip). I parked at the Visitor’s Center and did a self guided walking tour. There are lots of antebellum homes, historic churches and great ... read more

Back in April Debbie and Bev took me to Memphis for my 60th birthday. Wally was a big Elvis fan and the Graceland trip was one of our planned destinations. Our trip included him on our fun weekend. When I started to plan my trip from Hot Springs to Gulf Shores, Alabama I realized that Tupelo, Mississippi—Elvis’ birthplace, was just a short “jog” off my direct route. An opportunity not to be missed and because I travelled through Memphis on my way to Tupelo I am including some photos of Graceland along with the photos of Elvis’ first home. I must say that we were impressed with the reverence with which Graceland site has been developed, and this site is the same. Graceland stands alone in its grounds just as it did during Elvis’ lifetime; ... read more
