My second day here was less strenuous, but very intriguing since I met many of the people benefiting from donations. No photos, but a good work day. See below for our thoughts from the group. Debby Observations from Debby 1. Volunteers on a mission. Many people I met today came through either a religious group or were serving on a mission. Leslie is a young woman living in Los Angeles with a missionary group; Marilyn came for the week with her christian group to help in anyway she can; Gabriel is from Los Angeles with another missionary group; and another Leslie was told by god to quit her job and drive from Michigan to Pass C with her husband in her camper. A missionary group held singing and dancing to christian rock, and it looked like ... read more

What an adventure! Our group is staying with two sets of wonderful people, Lou and Wilma Rizzardi, and Marie Peralta, very fortunate people who had minimal and easy to repair damage to their homes in Pass Christian. Today, we got the lay of the land, looking at the places they visited last time in November. We made connections with new groups, say that some groups had folded, and observed a lot of young people here to volunteer on their spring break. What a vision. After eating lunch at God's Katrina Kitchen on the East side of town, Dave, Chris, and I headed over to the park, which is currently named "The Village" because it is the center of "town" now. We deconstructed a swing set and playground structure, rolled a lot of telephone poles into ... read more

Its Christmas time, so I am making my holiday visit to friends and relatives in Mississippi and Louisiana. I detoured to visit the Mississippi Gulf Coast. My family and I spent a week here in August - two weeks before Hurricane Katrina hit. Most of the news media has paid too much attention to the plight of New Orleans. The Mississippi Gulf Coast and other areas have been ignored. I was able to drive a ten-mile stretch of what once was Highway 90. This highway is on the water of the gulf. The beach is one step to the south and the homes are one step to the north. Except now the homes are gone. When I look towards where the homes once were it looks like a forest. There are plenty of trees. The leaves ... read more

It seems like forever has passed since Biloxi, but it’s only been a week or so. It was such an incredible experience. Our last day there was perhaps the most interesting, though I got less of a feel for the whole situation. We got up at the usual bright and early time and were going by 8AM. My group helped tear out the insides of a house. The house was rented, but the homeowner said he/she didn’t need us to keep anything. We kept what we could salvage, anyway. We were just a few blocks from the Salvation Army camp. On the way (we walked), we passed a Carolina Compassion group, a relief site with people just rummaging through boxes of clothes and goods, a similar site in front of the Dollar Stare, people cheering us ... read more
