2/5/07 The next morning I decided to do laundry. I drove to Gulf Shores to do it. It was amazing as pretty much everbody I ran into was retired. That’s true for all of Florida as well. One guy who was in his 80’s was watching his laundry. We talked for awhile. He is from Minnesota. I told him that is such a beautiful place and asked him rhetorically why would anyone leave there! After getting back to the campsite I rode my bike on a nice trail. It however is only about 6 miles long. They have plans in the works to expand the trail. It seems like trails in the South are much better than what we have back home, but then again I have not looked too hard into finding trails in the ... read more

Well boys and girls, sorry for this late update. There have been so many things that happened since we last spoke, where do I begin? Well firstly, I'm in Grenada Mississippi, not Tupelo-it was the closest choice to what I had available. We're about 4.5 hours from The Husband's home in Louisiana. We drove all the way from Des Moines to Mississsippi in one day-back to the original plan. How did we get here, and a day late you ask? Well let me tell ya. Wednesday: I leave work about noon-it's raining and ugly outside in DSM. Ozy's been groomed and he's pretty. The house sitter guy flaked out on me, but I have a replacement coming at 2:30. We go pick up our last minute items and rush to the house to meet the house ... read more

We drove the Natchez Trace from Jackson Mississippi to Springfield Plantation. It is 24 miles from Natchez. Springfield Plantation was built in 1790 and is the oldest grand plantation house in this area. Here, in 1791, Andrew Jackson was married to Rachel Robards, an event, which made Springfield the setting for one of early America’s most famous and later tragic stories of love, and devotion. Built in 1786-1791 during the Spanish Domination of West Florida (Mississippi, by Thomas Marston Green Jr. Mr. Green was a wealthy planter from Virginia. Springfield remains almost original, including magnificent Georgian-Adam-Federal woodwork and mantels hand carved in Virginia in the 18th century. From the upstairs balcony Linda and I had a few of the remaining 1000 acres that has not changed for the past few centuries. Our guide for this was ... read more

Natchez Trace was an old pioneer overland trail from Nashville Tennessee to Natchez Mississippi. Most of the early pioneers and explorers tried to stay on rivers. That was the less difficult way to go. This was not always possible. So, great overland routes eventually developed and the Natchez Trace is one of those famous trails like the Spanish Trail, Santa Fe Trail and Cimarron Trail. If you have ever driven through the South and looked at all the trees and undergrowth you would understand just how hard it must have been to open a trail overland. It was better than it looks today because what we see is second, third, fourth growth timber. In those days the forest was in pristine development where the taller trees probably shaded out the undergrowth and pioneers had less of ... read more

This is the third part of a series that is about the ride I took on my 2005 883 Low Harley Sportster ‘Effie’ from Kansas City to Novia Scotia and back. This was part of my vacation from 4 to 20 AUG 2006 SUN 6 AUG 06 The morning started at 7:30 AM as the earlier wake up call never came. It was as usual a great morning, cool with a few cars on the highway. Most of the time going across MS will be the small highways. The first stop is for Quitman County, I need this to match up with my Quitman AR city that I got last weekend for my ABCs. This will now make 108 points on the ABCs of Touring, last year I only got 100 points for the year. The ... read more

This is the second part of a series that is about the ride I took on my 2005 883 Low Harley Sportster 'Effie' from Kansas City to Novia Scotia and back. This was part of my vacation from 4 to 20 AUG 2006 Saturday 5 AUG 06 The morning was a late start again…. This is the story of my life lately. Previously even if I couldn’t get up and moving in the morning to make it to work, I could be up at the crack of dawn to start a motorcycle ride. But I am resigning myself to the vacation atmosphere and just whenever…It was a great ride out to Bakersfield MO (IBE #57). Again it was miles of shady lanes. A stop at the Bakersfield city limit sign to get the picture and just ... read more

In August of 2006, I changed career fields and had to go to Biloxi Mississippi for my Tech School. We were stationed in Utah at the time. It was a 4 week school, so I decided to drive. I crossed 7 states each way, and a lot of them were new to me, so I was pretty excited. It had only been a year since Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast. I don't know what I was expecting...I guess I figured that after a year, most of the clean up would be done. I was dead wrong! It looked like Katrina had just happened the week before. If the destruction was still that bad a year later, I can't imagine what it was like the day after. New Orleans got a lot of attention and damage because ... read more

After completing the Natchez Trace Parkway, we decided to spend the evening in Natchez, Mississippi. Natchez is a quaint little town located on the Mississippi River. The town is located on the top of a hill overlooking the river so you have an excellent view. It is a very small town as the pictures will show, however it does have a riverboat casino. The casino seems to be the thing to do in Natchez. We are not much into gambling, so we decided to leave the gambling for when we reached Vegas and stuck with a nice dinner overlooking the river. Natchez is a nice town, however we would only recommend spending a day or two there. ... read more
