posted by Onaxthiel: Hanging out with the cousins in the Twin Cities is fun. Unfortunately, they both have to go to work today, so Obfuscator and I have to find interesting things on our own this morning. ;) Discussed must see sights with our male cousin last night. He recommended Fort Snelling as the morning site, and a number of options for the afternoon spot. We decided on the Saint Paul Cathedral. Snelling was an interesting spot. Lovely views on two sides, at the confluence of the Mississippi and the Minnesota river. The fort has an antique orientation film you can watch before you enter. It has one of the forts founders walking the battlements and talking about “back in his day.” I thought it would have been more entertaining to have him simply reawaken in ... read more

We leave a week from tomorrow and are hitting "crunch time" in terms of packing and saying goodbyes to family and friends. It is a strange - but very nice - experience to have so many parties thrown in your honor. Most everyone tells us that they are envious of our plans ("I wish we had the guts to do what you guys are doing") and several are indicating that they want to come visit. Of course, we took the boys on a daylong visit to the Minnesota State Fair for games, rides, eating, and looking at all the animals and such. They wanted to know if Costa Rica has something similar - I have a feeling that the local festivals will seem puny and quaint by comparison. But then again, that is part of the ... read more

After stopping in Wisconsin to visit friends and play a few games of pool, we headed west toward Minnesota. Of course, on our way across Wisconsin we did stop to pickup some cheese (yum!). Our first stop in Minnesota was Minneapolis, where we swung by Mall of America just to check it out. The list of shops in the directory was dumbfounding, so we started walking around. In the center of the 100-acre mall is a mini amusement park, with roller coasters, rides, carnival games and ridiculous prizes. Looks like fun, but as we just spent a couple of days at Cedar Point, we moved on. We walked a full circle around the outside of this amusement area, which sounds simple but it was quite a hike! this outer area is where all the shops are. ... read more

Hello All! I figured it was time for an update. There is less than 15 days left before I fly out and I was thinking that I might recap the summer. I have about 2 weeks left of my summer internship at the Runestone Museum in Alexandria. It's been a great 3 months there. I've had a great time learning and experiencing all facets of the small museum. I even installed three exhibits! Other than the internship I've been working at the Geneva Beach Resort and the Viking motel. I've also been working at the Minnesouri Club, it's a lake club for a group of families and i've been taking care of their kids as a type of day counselor and babysitter. I basically spent the day acting like a 5 year old and playing on ... read more

Well hello everyone! I am looking at less than a month to go before I fly out to England and it suddenly seems that I have a million things that have to get done. I have spent the summer working at Luther Crest Bible Camp in Alexandria and had an amazing time. However that did leave me slightly cut off from the rest of the world and I have been making up for it since. Between looking into hostels, trying to figure out travel plans, and trying to start packing or at least figuring out what I am bringing, I have been rather busy. Also I spent a week in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area which was really fun and quite windy. I am really looking forward to this year and can't wait to get to ... read more

We left Paul and Corinne's in the morning after a great visit. We headed north into Wisconsin and then into Minnesota. Dave crossed the Mississippi for the first time ever. It was pretty wide in La Crosse, WI and we saw huge barges on the river. We hit rain before we got to WI and it got real heavy as the day progressed. When we stopped for fuel in MN lightning struck just outside the vehicle and the thunder hit at the same time. The rain stopped for the night when we hit our campsite in Big Island State Park. We had supper and had a campfire and then settled in and watched a movie on the computer. During the night the rain and storms came back. It was cool all day - It never got ... read more

Friday, July 06, 2007 We enjoyed the cool morning and didn’t get on our way until 11:00. It was a short drive to route 28 and then we headed east toward Ishpeming and Marquette. There were few places to eat along the way and those I spotted were many miles behind by the time they registered in my mind. I guess I wasn’t hungry. Nan Lou said she wasn’t hungry, and we motored on. After many miles we neared the outskirts of Ishpeming and Nan Lou admitted to being a little puckish, (Ham meant to say puckish----or perhaps not) maybe even downright starving, sometimes it is hard to tell. I had seen several Mickey signs and mentioned them only to receive an icy reply. After yesterday’s pasty, which tasted good but had less than desirous aftereffects, ... read more

A little less than two weeks until I leave for Prague, and there are still many things I don’t know yet. For instance, what is the Czech language like? In my head it’s a mix of Russian and German, with plenty of aggressive consonants mixed in for good measure. Where will I be living? For some reason, my program refuses to tell me that before I arrive, which makes me wonder if they think I wouldn’t come if I found out in advance. I also know very little about Czech history, culture, geography, etc., but I hope to pick up some of that along the way. If you’re curious about the Czech Republic, and more specifically Prague, feel free to ask me anything, because every answer I give will be the same. Go Wikipedia it. That’s ... read more

Greetings from Pipestone. No worries about the blood title. Jim's just a pint lower now. I tried to donate, but alas, my hemoglobin was a bit low (Mom and Dad-please don't worry about this; just a wee bit low, 11.9 and it needed to be 12.5). Yep, we have traveled over 1100 miles in the past days to give blood. We were recruited by Lorraine, the wife of Jim's deceased second cousin, to give blood this afternoon. And I just want to mention that the lovely LPN doing my interview and checking my vitals (my BP and temp and pulse were excellent by the way) commented on "loving my accent." I know all my former co-workers will find that highlarious. We have enjoyed Pipestone and spendiing time with Aunt Dorothy. A little too much butt time ... read more

Monday, July 02, 2007 We got up. We went to Sam’s. We went to a coffee place. I went to a museum. We left Minnesota. We found a National Forest Campground. We ate. Nan Lou beat me by one point. (This was Ham’s entry for today. He is very tired. I will now write the true log entry to the best of my ability.) We had to be up, dressed, and on our way before nine A.M. This is always a chore for us. Perhaps we can sleep in tomorrow. The thing is Ham noticed low tires last night. He dug out his little thing that inflates them and one was still down a little this morning. So, it was off to Sam’s to be first in line, if possible, to see what the trouble was. ... read more
