I'm back now, and I have finished uploading all of the pictures I wanted to put online, including my photos from Paris, London, Wales, and Scotland (I put all the UK pictures in a seperate album). The website is: http://community.webshots.com/user/rickrainy Since I am home, this will be the last entry in the travel blog. It was a great trip, and its hard to believe all the things I saw and experienced, and I can't wait to go again, except I think if I get the chance to travel internationally again, I am going to try to go for somewhere other than Europe, but there is still enough there for me to go back, even to the same cities I have already been too.... read more

Howdy Partners! Have now spent so much time in the mid-west I feel like a pro-cowgirl. Can ride a horse, drive cattle and ride bulls with the best of 'em. After LA, cousins Michael, Heather, Spenser & Mallory v. kindly put us up for a few days. It was brilliant to see them all and they really looked after us. Have been 'hiking' in Yosemite and the Rockies, learnt about the Mormons in Salt Lake City, spent some time at a beautiful Ranch in Wyoming, seen 200 bears (in a safari park) and visited so many amazing little towns where we were the only people not wearing cowboy gear! One bar really made me feel like I was on a movie set for an old western and Karl was convinced the cowboys would 'make him dance' ... read more

Today was the best day ever. We had nothing planned and it was wonderful. We pulled into a park in Minnesota to chill out for the day. The park had a sand bottom swimming pool and showers!!! The pool water was a little cold but I didn't care. It was so nice to get wet and get get all the gunk off my skin from camping out for the last couple of days. Afterwards we hit the coldest showers I've ever been to. I got a head cold freeze just from the water running on my hair. I also managed to find a cheeseburger which I had been craving for days. It was tasty! ... read more

PAT: Last night while packing, I had the TV on. What should be playing but Smokey & The Bandit!!! Now I'm inspired for that long road trip! Before Smokey & The Bandit the movie Easy Rider was on, another good road trip movie. I can't comment on any inspiration that movie might provide...mom my might be reading this. This morning sure started off on the wrong foot. I set my alarm for 5:30am to get into work early so I could leave by 10am. Either I shut off the alarm and went back to bed or it never went off and i didnt' get up until 8am. I guess I'll look at the positives and by happy for the extra 2.5 hours of sleep I got. As if that wasn't enough, on they way to work ... read more

I've decided to do a current journal and fill in South America steadily. Sorry that it's all over the place. After Curitiba when went up the Sao Paulo, for a night then ducked up to Rio for our plane to New York. We nearly froze when we got off the plane at 6am, but over the next few days covered most of what there is to see in the Big Apple. Lundy headed over to London on the 15th, so it was a bit strange saying bye in the subway after travelling for so long together. I will be glad however to not have to throw any more pillows at him to stop the snoring (hehehe, sorry Lundy). The next day I went to Chicago, which wasn't any warmer, and then caught a plane to Minneapolis. ... read more

It was a great feeling when I finished swimming across the Mississippi River, to fulfill my to-do-list-before-I-die. Even though it was at the Headwaters, MN, where the Mississippi River is only about 30 feet wide, but of course I did "Swim across the Mississippi River" (check). The Mississippi Headwaters is located in the Itasca State Park under the Minnesota Dept. of Natural Resources. There is a wooden sign to signify the headwaters, HERE 1475 FT ABOVE THE OCEAN THE MIGHTY MISSISSIPPI BEGINS TO FLOW ON ITS WINDING WAY 2552 MILES TO THE GULF OF MEXICO. "Mississippi" is way harder to spell than "Amazon" or "Nile". LOL. ... read more

Over Spring Break 2001 we visited my sister Sue, husband Rob, and their kids Alyssa and Brendan, in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. We went to Sanibel Island and then to Disney World and Universal Studios. As summer approached we didn’t have any vacation plans. We had sworn off road trips, but as I contemplated the map of the U.S. I realized that we had been to every state except for Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, and Alaska. This would mean at least one more road trip; but we decided to cater to the kids activities and not stay at B&Bs. So we decided to go camping and stay at nice hotels with swimming pools. I check the internet and made reservations for the campground at Bear Head Lake State Park, near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. 28 ... read more

If you are someone who enjoys the combination of travel and excersize I would reccommed trying the MS 150 bike ride. Every state in the Union offers a 150 mile bike ride that is fully supported and benifits the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. ... read more

HMMM, this may be hard. I am going to try to go back 8 years (or is it 9 years?) and put together a blog for my travels since then. I realize now that I have been on sort of an eight (or nine?) year "journey" since I haven't lived anywhere longer than 6 months since the Spring of 1997. Has it really been that long??? Wow, "what a long strange trip it's been". I fear writing this because I’m sure I will miss times that I spent with some of you. This is more due to my bad memory and the fact that I don’t have any photos of the "trip" with you guys to refresh memory. Well here I go: I left Duluth, Minnesota, in April of 1997 thanks to the advice of Wendy ... read more
