I'm trying out a new camera that Tom got for free at work. There was some difficulty in acquiring a charger, but that mission has been accomplished. These pictures are acting as a test run for my upcoming trip to Portland this week. I went on a quick camping jaunt this weekend with a fellow forester-in-the-making. The goal was twofold. First, I am trying to get some information on a certain species of grass that is considered invasive in the area. It has been widely planted for years as a way to prevent erosion, but it tends to take over and do as any other invasive would. Secondly, I wanted to see the lake and woods one more time before winter hits, or at least before all of the leaves fall. It was a fantastic weekend, ... read more

MINNESOTA Settling in to life in the mid-west....in Minne-SOODA! Sounds pretty random, huh?! Never did I think I would move here! The idea of going to MN never even crossed my mind in the past...& now I'm living here...crazy! (although I'm really not here all that much). But I love it! Every where you turn, there's a lake. And the trees in the fall are gorgeous! So much nature & wild life here. The other day I saw an albino squirrel & I already told you about deer in our yard! My mom, nana & aunt pam came up to visit at the beginning of Oct. It was my nana's 72 birthday so we got to celebrate it all together! We went to Stillwater (a really cute, quaint town next to the St. Croix River ... read more

Hey y'all! Chugging out the blogs a leeetle quicker...tho still q behind (we're now in Calgary - think we're doing this the blond way!) but anyway! So Minnesota (with a dash of Wisconsin thrown in for good measure!)....1st Oct - 8th & v different from everywhere else so far. Arrived to find a LOT of rain & a train full of people dressed as Vikings. Once we realised the 2 hour time difference from Chicago probably wan't enough to make us hallucinate we discovered the Vikings are the football team & today was big game day. Unfortunately this meant town was closed down pretty much until after the game & Lindsay & Lucy were left to wander the streets playing in the puddles for several hours (isn't it great how things are funny looking back...?! Thank ... read more

Posted by: Onaxthiel: Yesterday was what we refer to as a “driving day” which often means that Obfuscator doesn't like writing them up. Also, I have been piloting the car for the last few days, so between these factors, I get to tell you all what happened on a mostly dull drive across South Dakota. That's alright, I wanted to review some of my medical books today anyhow. Our wake up was in the unexpectedly crowded camp sight in the badlands about the same time that everyone else in the camp was beginning to stir. The area was filled with an assortment of license plates from around the Midwest and a few outliers like Vermont and Alaska. In the night our bivies had gotten a fairly heavy coating of dew on them. Oh yeah! That's why ... read more

We continued along US 2 through northern Minnesota. This area is more and more like home. We’re seeing trees that have their bright fall colors. It was a surprise to see the Mississippi River this far north. It’s much smaller than when we saw it further south. We camped along the banks of the Mississippi River near Grand Rapids at Pokegama Recreation Area, a Forest Service campground. ... read more

Hello to all our blog-eyed friends & family, Sorry we haven't kept you up as we should; ATT isn't as strong in these here parts. Anyway, I'll backtrack 2 days so you won't have missed anything. Let's start out in mid-South Dakota at Walls Drug Store. It is a site not to be missed. A pharmacist & his wife came there in 1931, but had a tough time making a go of it. His wife got the bright idea of giving out free ice water to travelers to encourage them to stop and put signs out on the highway. Of course it worked and is still working...lots of signs, 5 cent coffee, food, gifts, oh yes and drugs and ice water. It is worth a stop! Had to get on the interstate 90, but got off ... read more

It has nearly been 10 months since I made the decision to leave the corporate world behind in pursuit of an adventure. And now I find myself 1 day away from departure, sitting in my parent’s house with all of my personal belongs trying to figure out how one packs for an entire year. Over these last several months I have slowly been preparing myself for what is coming next - life as an English teacher in the Chongqing, China. I have been reading as much as possible about life in China, trying to pick up small bits of the Chinese I left back in college, and saying goodbye to friends and family. I hope to share with you my experiences, the people I meet along the way, and my perspective of living on the other ... read more

I have been here for five days now and I'm still really enjoying it here. Nothing really new has happened here over the last day. I have a new favorite baby his name is Joshua. He is so cute and I think he really likes me. I haven't been updated on my Grandma yet. I just hope that she's okay and nothing really serious is going to happen. It’s just so disappointing for me that this had to happen as soon as we left. The only thing that happened that is really new is that yesterday we took the toddlers to this park. It was a nice walk there and the playground was very nice. They had a merry go round and all the kids wanted to go on it and spin around until they couldn't ... read more

I have been n Tanzania for a total of four days. I thought that I wouldn't like it here, but I actually have grown to like it a lot more than I thought. I really like seeing the kids every day. They are so cute and loveable. I already have a favorite her name is Violet. She just started walking, but she needs some more practice she still falls over every nice and a while. Last night we went to this very nice restaurant. I t was a volunteers last day here at the orphanage. The apartments that we are going to live in are well on their way. For the time being we are living in these cottages and they are very nice. Yesterday a baby died. Her name was Queen and no one ... read more

Our boarding passes have been printed and we have only a few more last minute tasks to complete before we leave on this journey to Tanzania. It's nine am in Minnesota and our plane leaves at 3pm. We planned a surprise party for Olivia last night. It went off without a hitch except that she knew about it. We hosted 20 or so teenagers at the local pizza place. They polished off 5 large pizza's. Thanks to Max for suggesting we let Davanni's host the party instead of having it at our house. That would have been quite a mess the day before we leave. We really should travel like this more often. Since having Anne's oldest, Max, stay at the house we've completed so many more tasks and did so much more cleaning. The house ... read more
