Awwww family. I have just spent the last few days with my Aunt Val and Uncle Mike. Their two daughters Lucy and Marie were in and out as they were preparing to leave for the school year. My first 24 hours in MI was not impressive. Going north from Green Bay WI to the Upper Peninsula (The UP is what the locals say) I hit solid sheets of rain. Visibility was mere yards so I was unable to see the beautiful sights Val has told me about. Apparently it is the most beautiful part of the state and where many go to vacation. I will have to try it again on another trip in the future. I did stay at Kayla and Michaels, Val and Mike's friends, lovely wooden cabin on Lake Superior. They were gracious ... read more

We entered the Upper Peninsula driving over Mackinac Bridge, an exciting experience. In Saint Ignace, we climbed 170 steps up Castle Rock which afforded a beautiful overlook view of the area. The local Ojibwa Museum gave us great insight into early Indian culture. Of course, Mackinac Island was a highlight, especially Fort Mackinac, Arch Rock and the Grand Hotel. We paid to walk inside the hotel. Mike posed on the front veranda in homage to one of his favorite movies, Somewhere in Time, which was filmed there.... read more

We had doubts about staying at a county fairground, but the nearby bike trail and river were delightful! A local ranger stopped us on our six mile off-road vehicle trail ride to remind us that we needed to purchase a trail ride sticker for Michigan. The Thunder Bay Marine Heritage Center Museum highlighted shipwrecks in Thunder Bay. We joined Lois’ friend and husband at their church, Living Hope, on Sunday then traveled down Rt. 23 to their home right on Lake Huron. Along the way, we enjoyed a giant grilled cinnamon roll from Connie’s Café (yumm!!). Mike & Deb have a slice of heaven with a beach in their back yard and 10 acres of forest across the road.... read more

On our way, we stopped at Castle Museum, a converted stone post office in Saginaw that houses the town’s local history. In Bay city, we discovered how wonderful and cost-affordable county RV parks can be. The park was small but very well-kept and located close to Lake Huron. In Bay City, we visited the USS Edson destroyer used in Vietnam, then rode our Lectric bikes on an amazing miles-long boardwalk along and over the Saginaw River.... read more

We left our Ohio home base and headed to Toledo and a visit with Mike's nephew and wife in their new home, a charming older house with an inviting front porch. Then we headed to Monroe, MI for a stay at The Flower Market, a Harvest Host that specializes in Bonsai trees. We parked behind the store on a gravel road near the chicken coop. The hosts were very welcoming, and the shop also has plants, flowers, and other gifts.... read more

Saturday 16th.... Back at Tim and Debs at Novi which is about 30 minutes out of the cbd of Detroit. We took off to the City of Detroit to have lunch in Mexican Town, what a gorgeous little corner of Detroit City, we had an authentic Mexican lunch at Los Galanes and of course a pitcher of margarita, it was delicious. Then off to the Detroit River Walk to catch a one hour boat cruise along the Detroit River, the river flows west and south for 24 nautical miles from Lake St Clair to Lake Erie as a strait in the Great Lakes. It was a great way to overview the city of Detroit and on the other side of the river is Windsor in Canada. We thoroughly enjoyed it taking in the Ambassador Bridge which ... read more

Well, it was one of those days…. We crossed over the Mackinac Bridge from yesterdays blog. Due to pulling the trailer it cost us $10 to cross the bridge but no other way to go expect back around Wisconsin. Crossing the bridge allowed us to see up close the construction of this amazing bridge and to view more of the area where Lake Huron and Lake Michigan meet. Nate continued to drive as I worked. He said he was getting low on gas, I pulled up the location and price of a few gas stations since gas is averaging $5.20 per gallon right now, but Nate did not exit to one of these gas stations. He continued on the interstate because of another driver pulling a flatbed trailer that was swerving all over the two lanes. ... read more

We started the day out at Deer Ranch. Upon entering the ranch, we entered a fawn enclosure. The fawn was only 3 weeks old, still very soft, tiny, and wobbly. After this we walked the property and feed the deer apples and carrots. Apples are their favorite, but they are not too picky. I think that we enjoyed it more than others because we stayed much longer. Plus, we had to return to the fawn before leaving. Pulling Nate away from the fawn was a bit difficult. He stayed behind and ran out with his jacket pulled out saying come on let’s go I got the fawn, but he was just kidding around. Oh, we got our first picture of small red squirrel, so very cute, just chillin’ with the deer. After this we visited Castle ... read more

Our adventure continues thru the Upper Peninsula to Tahquamenon Falls State Park. Since there was no phone or internet at our next planned camping stop, we made a quick decision to stop over to view the fall and continue since tomorrow is payroll. It was a very short walk from the parking lot to view Tahquamenon Upper Falls. There were multiple viewing platforms that continued to be more impressive leading to a full-on view, almost level with the falls, down 94 steps. You could feel the mist of the fall on your face as you stood on the outermost facing deck. The fall was powerful, brown, and full. So much flow that it cascaded over the cliff creating a tunnel behind the waterfall. We did not take time to view the lower falls since it was ... read more
