Well, it was one of those days….
We crossed over the Mackinac Bridge from yesterdays blog. Due to pulling the trailer it cost us $10 to cross the bridge but no other way to go expect back around Wisconsin. Crossing the bridge allowed us to see up close the construction of this amazing bridge and to view more of the area where Lake Huron and Lake Michigan meet.
Nate continued to drive as I worked. He said he was getting low on gas, I pulled up the location and price of a few gas stations since gas is averaging $5.20 per gallon right now, but Nate did not exit to one of these gas stations. He continued on the interstate because of another driver pulling a flatbed trailer that was swerving all over the two lanes. I started panicking because the next exit did not show fuel, we were down to 14 miles of gas per the truck (yes, I know there is some kind of reserve, but I am not a risk taker). I kept looking and found a fuel station not too far off, but I was worried it would not be in service since we have
seen that up here. Luckily, we made it to the gas station, and they had fuel, but when we got out to fuel, we smelled burnt tire. Yeap it was our tire. Honestly, I am just grateful that God was looking out for us and that we found the tire when we did because when we pulled down the street to replace the tire Nate said that the tire deflated more in that short drive. Glad we were not on the interstate any longer. Now anyone that knows Nate, knows that he is constantly getting onto everyone for their tires, so I am really surprised that he did not replace ours before leaving for the trip. He knows these tires do not have a lot of life and is struggling to find just a replacement for the spare we used, far less 5 new tires (4 + 1 spare). We stopped at multiple locations on the way to Tawas to find tires but only found one and Nate did not purchase. Now I think he is regretting not purchasing that one since we have no spare. Well the short drive today turned into a long one, but hey I got
a lot of work done today in the midst of the chaos. Always got to look on the bright side.
Nate was frustrated by the time we arrived, and the first campground was full. So, we headed to Tawas Point State Park around the corner which had a lot of sights but wanted to charge us $38 for the site + $10 entrance fee for today + $10 entrance fee for tomorrow when we have to check out by 1. I was like no thank you I am not paying $58 for a site with no water or sewer. We got back in the truck to research, and the campground worker came out to offer to waive the second day $10 charge. So, Nate being tired, grumpy, and worried about the tire took the deal. Nate began to back into our site and I stood outside to guide him, but then I remembered we needed to fill the travel trailer with water since we had no hook up on the site. When I told him, he got frustrated and pulled off leaving me standing there. I write all this so that you know that traveling is not like vacation
it is more work, but so worth it. I just try to be transparent with people so they can see the real picture on the road.
It all worked out, he returned, we set up, and headed out for a walk. We took the Tawas Point Sandy Hook Nature Trail that led to the Tawas Point Dog Beach on Tawas Bay, Tawas Point Lighthouse, and Lake Huron. Walking on the beach we saw a lot of different animal tracks. The only one we could identify was the deer. We were so lucky to stumble across 2 Piping Plover birds nesting on the beach. In the campground we found a few black squirrels that were a bit larger than our grey squirrels in Florida. They almost appeared to be tiny black bears, very fluffy, and cute.
