Monday:We may not have seen a brown bear in the White Mountains, but when we left our apartment it was clear that 'daddy bear' had visited in the night - the rather large communal trash bin (aka dumpster) had been emptied onto the car park. Today's objective was to potter down to Manchester and the first stop was Center Harbor - this ticked two boxes, firstly, a coffee stop and secondly, the chance for us to view Lake Winnipesaukee on a bright sunny day. Next came the the highlight of the day - a Shaker Village. It's rare that my gnat-like concentration span will cope with a 90 minutes 'narrative' tour - it did this time!! I'm now ready for the quiz question 'Why are Shakers so-called?'. After the tour we looked around other buildings on ... read more

Geo: 42.3585, -71.0596 Yesterday we grabbed the hop on hop off bus to go back to Harvard and MIT to visit their museums. What a mess. Boston had a Columbus Day parade yesterday and the entire bus schedule and stops were messed up. We had to walk about a mile farther to catch the first bus. When we got there the bus sat there for almost an hour before moving. When we got to our stop near Harvard, it had been 2 hours. We went to the Harvard Museum of Natural History. It was pretty nice. By the time we got back to the bus stop and waited for the next bus it was too late to make the MIT museum, which probably would have been pretty hi tech. We stopped at a pub on the ... read more

More than twenty-five years ago, when my mother was still living, I had the idea to share our travels in somewhat detailed letters so she could experience what we saw, smelled, felt, tasted and learned. She enjoyed the letters, written as stories -- epistles -- but after her death I felt I had no audience, no recipient, who might relish reading what we had done. The last epistle I wrote, about a trip to Seattle, was in perhaps 2004 and, except for a few friends, went unshared. It seems a shame to let a good practice fall away, so when Mark asked that I try again, I agreed. My mother will not be reading this, but she is with me always and I think she would be very happy and, I hope, entertained. The morning was ... read more

Geo: 42.3585, -71.0596 Got up Thursday morning and started the second half of the freedom trail. The weather is still holding out. There is a storm system to the south of us. It keeps trying to come up the coast, but a high pressure system is holding it just to the south of us. So it is cloudy and cool(60 degrees), but not raining. The cold I caught is still bothering me. Why is it that I can go 2 years without getting sick and as soon as we go on a trip it catches me. Anyway, we walked to the Old North Church, which is where they hung the lanterns to warn Paul Revere that the British were coming. We proceeded to Copp's Hill Burying Ground, where a lot of patriots are buried. We crossed ... read more

Geo: 42.3585, -71.0596 We arrived in Boston around noon yesterday. We checked into our hotel and drove the car to the airport. We took a water taxi back to the other side of the bay to our hotel. That was fun. I'm having trouble because I seem to have caught a cold. I can't take any medication for it as I seem to be allergic to almost all cold remedies. So I am toughing it out. I should also say that Stacy is toughing it out also. This morning we got up and walked half of the Freedom Trail. We saw Paul Revere's house, which was built in the late 1600's. We also toured the old State House and the Capitol building. We went to the Boston massacre site and to a couple of graveyards. The ... read more

USA - Bar Harbour, Maine Prior to leaving the ship - we had to go through Immigration. Officers come to the ship to go through the procedure to enter the USA. We had already entered the USA on the beginning of our trip when we landed in Los Angeles on our way to New York and had had our photos and fingerprints done. So we didn't have to go through all that again. Today we went off the ship by tender to Bar Harbour - what a great little town it is very quaint as they all seem to be over this part of the world. We did a bus tour to Acadia National Park and up the to the top of one of the mountains where we had the most fantastic view of ... read more

September 28, 2013 We had an easy 21 minutes driving into Boston from Framingham early this morning and no problem at all finding a place in the underground parking at Boston Common. It wouldn't have been this fast and easy if it hadn't been a weekend and the parking would have been $40 instead of $12. We are a couple of tired puppies tonight, I think we walked at least 8 miles today. We got an early start to this bluebird sky day...we walked around Boston Common, toured the public gardens, walked through the Faneuil Market and Quincy Market, walked the entire Freedom Trail and saw every sight and read almost every interpretive sign on it, walked over the Charlestown Bridge, climbed the 294 steps to the top of the Bunker Hill Monument, boarded the U.S.S. ... read more

I've been writing these blogs mostly because I like to write and since I always keep too much on plate (and on Greg's too for that matter), I'll never get around to writing a novel or something... and because someday we might want to look back at the adventures we've had over the years... what's been completely surprising to me is how much people seem to get a kick out of them... and I dig it! So here's this year's Boston adventure... Because being a farmers market vendor can sometimes impair one's brain (giving up all Friday nights of life, getting up early, all the lugging... you know), we felt it was a good idea to drive to Boston directly following market on Saturday... so having been up since 4am for market, around 2pm after we ... read more

There are in fact several marinas on Boston’s “downtown” waterfront but we have stayed only at the Consitution Marina. If you want to stay here, you should definitely make a reservation. Just “up the steps” from the marina is the Sorelle Bakery & Cafe on Chelsea Street, a pleasant place that serves good coffee, croissants and bagel-sandwiches. Ten minutes walk up Charlestown Main Street brings you to the Warren Tavern, built in the 1700’s. This is a pleasing, appropriately old fashioned place that served us an excellent plate of large, juicy chicken wings (and a nice bottle of wine). A couple of blocks further brings you to a small convenience store. It is very easy to walk across the bridge to the North End and from there into Boston. On a previous visit, we walked to ... read more
