In two days, I'll be in a Northwest plane which will be racing off the runway. Now that I have "Business Visa F", I know this trip is really going to happen. Presently, I don't know where to start getting ready. My mind is a scattered mess. I start one thing and remember something else and before I know it I move on to a third thing. I'm hoping that writing for a couple of minutes will get me focused. I look at this trip much like I looked at childbirth-As happy as I was starting or enlarging the family, I knew that I was putting myself at a great risk; women die because of pregnancies and/or birthing. The same is the case whenever we venture away from our comfort zone (which for me, you know, ... read more

Nice to talk to you again. It’s now May 12 and we leave for New York on Saturday, the same day as our hosts Doug and Maryvonne leave for a week in Nice and a weeks cycling tour of Corsica. (It’s a pity Michael you will not be there at the same time, you would enjoy their company) Thank you all for your emails but I would like to clarify one thing, it’s not really a holiday. Up at 7 to do 8 or 10 laps at the pool before a vigourous day of walking or touring. Phil described our travels as Art-itecture boot camp, but its really day after day of fun and adventure (and hard work) Doug and Maryvonne have been lovely to be with, so hospitable and so knowledgeable. We took them and ... read more

Good Morning all, April and I are finally on THE ROAD -- Woo-Hoo! We left home rather late (although early to us..lol) yesterday (around 11:30am I believe). It was beautiful weather outside, we had our I-Pod plugged in, and we were anxious to go! Our first destination was a small one, but a place where we have been dying to go -- Famous Dave's BBQ in Mount Vernon (sp?), New Jersey. I wanted to check it out because I saw a segment on this restaurant one day while flipping through the channels and thought it was the cutest/funkiest little place. The one on TV was made to look like an old fashion BBQ shack/Juke Joint/Roadhouse. Ape & I love stuff like that! Actually, I thought the style was so cute I turned OUR kitchen into ... read more

Well, Meredith and I went out to catch the final Terps game we will get to see till they make it to the sweet sixteen. :-) A loss to UNC, but we can live with a tough loss to the #2 team in the country. We are really getting excited now. All the shopping is done. Electronics are bought. Clothes have been gathered. The only thing delaying us now is the snow forcast here the next day or so. 10"+ of snow! I think we should be fine by Tues. evening though. We were thinking of dropping Maddux off at Nick & Beth's tonight but we want to spend as much time as possible with the pup. That's about it. All preparations are done and the next entry here should be from the Motherland. :-) I ... read more

We are getting ready for the big trip to India. Meredith's first time out of the US. It is going to be an amazing experience for her to see a completely new place. It is also going to be an amazing experience for me to see my family again after 10 years. Tonight we are going to do a test pack. If it were up to me, I would just shove some clothes in a backpack and we would be off! I want Mer to take it slow and make sure we have enough room for everything she needs. We are going to do a test pack tonight to make sure we have enough room for clothes, toiletries (sp?) etc. My Dad left yesterday from the US. He was to connect through Amsterdam, but missed his ... read more

A week or so ago I stopped at the post office and ask for a mail bag and an M mail label. M mail is a service of the post office whereby a person can send a number of books at a low rate to another country. I was told the minimum weight allowed was eleven pounds and the maximum weight was sixty-six pounds. I took the bag home and a few days later Nancy and I sorted through a collection of books selecting those we would ship to Prague. The winter evening will be long and as TV is not be of interest there should be lots of time for reading. I tied bundles of four or five books together and Nancy added a label on the first book giving our address in Prague. All ... read more

Call it providence, accident, dumb luck, co-incidence … whatever you want to but it is amazing how everything has come together making this adventure of living in Prague for six months possible. When we received the invitation several big questions came to mind; i.e. what to do about the house? What about medical insurance as Bill will go on Medicare in February? What about the mail for six months? What about our medical prescriptions? These were the biggies as far as we were concerned. The house was the biggest potential problem. We really did not want the house to sit empty for six months. What could we do? Nancy came up with the idea of talking to a remodeling company we have used on various tasks in the past, asking if they had a need for ... read more

I must have looked through over 500 digitally stored pictures before I found one where the two of us are in the same photo. This photo was taken by our friend Dr. Bill Kinzer. Bill was at the concert, saw us and snapped our picture. Usually I, Bill, can never prove through pictures that I have been anywhere. Today is a rainy, cloudy day here as Bill and I are doing more preparation for our upcoming trip to the Czech Republic. Trip? More like sojourn since we will be there for six months. Six months doesn’t seem long when you start thinking about it but I know very well how long six months can be. Bill spent six months in China in 1995. Sun Hai and Wang Jing were living with me when he left. They ... read more

Our first stop on our east coast trip was in Baltimore and to the DC area. We were only in the area for a couple of days but we did take in a Orioles game and see some of the typical Washington DC sites. Before going to the Orioles game we stoped by the ESPN Zone and I do have to say that anyone who is a sports fan should eat in an ESPN Zone at some point . . . great food and a very fun atmosphere! The Orioles game was fun and I think that Camden yards was one of our favorite ballparks to visit. Obviously it did not have the history of Yankee Stadium or Fenway Park. But for what it lacks in history it makes up for in comfort. A truly great ... read more
